Theres a genuine charm in the gimmick of tattoo-based magic in an art school environment. The Art Institute-Meets-Hogwarts feeling of the series is cute enough. Still, the sense of danger and menace circulating around the edges of the first issue is really going to have to build into something more prominent if the series as a whole is going to be satisfying. The Marked is off to a solid start. I enjoyed diving into this new world of magic and legacy, and I can't wait to see what happens next and how Saskia ends up the way she is, as we see at the beginning of the issue. Shadowline/Image Comics didn't live up to the hype with The Marked; they completely surpassed it in my opinion. At 48 pages priced the same as a standard issue, this is a can't lose introduction to The Marked. Essentially giving away the second issue for free doesn't even seem like a risky proposition as it's going to be hard for readers to not want to see what happens next issue. The concept behind The Marked is what drew me in, and made me want to read this title. I find it very interesting that a tattoo could be the source of magic. The back story to this coming-of-age comic will keep readers busy with epic battles, factions of magicians, and sinister cabals. The Marked are an ancient order with a history of battling occult forces that threaten humanity. Their last great struggle was during World War II, when they teamed up with the Mages and other mystical groups to defeat the Lords of Chaos. Not bad. The lore is interesting and the issue leaves off heading in an interesting direction. Two of the main characters look identical aside from what they wear, I'd like to see more differentiation between them.
