The Amazing Spider-Man is quickly shaping up to be one of the stronger Secret Empire tie-ins, though this issue's strengths have less to do with Marvel's latest crossover event and more with the ways in which it furthers several of the series' key plot threads. With top-notch art from Stuart Immonen, a nuanced look at the warring sides of Peter Parker's life and the grand return of Otto Octavius, there's plenty for ASM fans to chew on here. Read Full Review
A Secret Empire tie-in kicks off with a nice showdown between Spider-Man and the newest version of Doc Ock, so at least this issue has that going for it. I hope the rest of the tie-in is this good. Read Full Review
The Amazing Spider-Man #29 lays a strong foundation for this new story arc that promises to tell us who the rightful ruler of Parker Industries is. The battle between our web slinging hero and the mayhem of one of his classic rivals is on, and fans of the series will I'm sure be thrilled. If you're looking for a good place to pick this title up anew, there is no better time than the present. Read Full Review
Amazing Spider-Man (vol. 4) #29 emphasizes Peter Parker's fickle nature to a fault, but contains enough witty writing and delicious visuals, headed by superstar artist Stuart Immonen, that this "Secret Empire" story gets a shaky start on the right foot. Read Full Review
Amazing Spider-Man #29 did a good job of using the Secret Empire setting to further the rivalry between Spider-Man and Doctor Octopus. The developments of Secret Empire strike home for Peter Parker as Dan Slott and Christos Gage push the CEO of Parker Industries into a corner. Doctor Octopus' proposal to Spider-Man should lead to an even better next issue as we learn why Peter hasn't shown up in recent issues of Secret Empire. Read Full Review
What starts as a great issue fizzles out considerably at the end due to some contrived script decisions (but at least Doc Ock looks all types of awesome). Read Full Review
Am I horrible person for thinking this has been one of, if not the best, issue in this current incarnation of Amazing Spider-Man??? Stuart Immonen is awesome! His art is perfect for this book. This was a great tie in to Secret Empire, but it is not a required one. It stands on its own and is entertaining the whole way through. The stakes have been raised for the next issue.
I enjoyed this issue. Immonen's art is, well, amazing, and I liked the return of the Superior Spider-Man. That was a great series and this new iteration of Otto/Spidey works with me. Also, it fits in well as a "Secret Empire" crossover as it works independently as its own story.
As the Hydra takeover starts, Doc Ock makes the event personal by revealing his intention to take Parker Industries away from Pete. Stuart Immonen gets to kick off two awesome fight scenes in superb style, but in both cases Dan Slott's script short-circuits the violence so that we can concentrate more on Pete getting verbally beaten up for being a bad Tony Stark analogue and on Doc Ock chowing down on a double helping of scenery. The balance of attention is a little frustrating, but the brewing plot for the Secret Empire tie-in looks mighty promising.
To be fair, it might just be my bias towards the Superior Spider-Man, but I liked this issue alone more than the whole previous story arc. Even though this is a Secret Empire tie-in, there wasn't anything confusing about it and it worked fine without reading the main story itself. There were seeds planted for the future stories (or maybe just the following issues in this arc), but I am still cautious that Slott will not deliver a decent ending.
I love Superior Octopus
This was just all right for me. Not really feeling the tension. It felt a bit of a weak issue.
Sorry Slott, you need stop
This is boring and lame
I really liked this isssue right up to the end!! Damn marvel and their damn events! The build up of Doc Ock and Spidey was great and then peter just leaves because of the events of Secret Empire!?!? Come on that's just terrible story telling just because it had to fit in Marvel's 82nd event this year! Thank God for the start of Spectacular Spider-Man but I'm sure Marvel will find a way to ruin that title as well.......
I do like Superior Octopus. But.... After Slott has built this story for the last few years, it really has never paid off, we have this Peter who isn't comfortable in his own skin (or suit) anymore, and what? now the whole payoff of Parker Industries is it's going to be torn down in a tie-in book? At least Superior Spider-man was worth the journey, this is just blerghh..when can we get back to a good story with some emotional weight and investment? ....despite having some fun action scenes.
I have no problem with Dan Slott. Just look at the Silver Surfer books, they are heart wrenching right now. When can we get that here, Dan?!
