So, what do you say about something like this? Did it meet expectations? Yes. As a matter of fact, it exceeded expectations and has really set a tone for the rest of the series. I like to think of this comic as the pilot for the lost television series that was supposed to take place between Star Wars and Empire. Everything about it screams Star Wars. Even the opening introduction belongs on a yellow-lettered opening crawl. It even ends in an ellipsis! I went in to this thinking that my stomach would be turning as I flip every page and I could not be more ecstatic to be wrong. It's clear the handling of the property is in the right hands. Anyone who thought Brian Wood would mess this up is nuts and the cover by Alex Ross is a perfect balance of epic opera and awesome action. You can tell the people behind this series love what they're doing. The only surprise really was how good the art was by Carlos D'Anda. His work on this issue reminded me of J. Scott Campbell, only with a lot more time and care taken with backgrounds and technology. It's particularly noticeable in the detail of the characters, but also in Leia's lips do I see a resemblance in styles. It's only one issue of course, but I can't help but think this guy is going to be better than Campbell ever was due to the incredible detailed work. Read Full Review

D'Anda packs Star Wars #1 with some incredible work, particularly during the action sequences. The opening dogfight and subsequent ground battle pack a real punch, and D'Anda's attention to detail " particularly where vehicles and the design elements of the Star Wars Universe are concerned " is responsible for the success of these scenes. Take for instance the Vader sequence " D'Anda's ever-so-subtle visual tweaks in Vader's armor, as well as the way he frames him in-panel, helps to sell Vader's emotions despite his outward appearance being more or less static. His basic character work is strong, too (but don't expect actor likenesses), though a little less refined than what we saw in his work in 2011's Batman: Arkham City comic book prequel. This is a solid introduction to the universe through Brian Wood's point of view. It presumes some pre-existing knowledge, but not much, and wastes no time breaking out the stars and firing up the action. I'm not sure what the recent business transaction of the Lucasfilm properties means exactly for Dark Horse's publication of Star Wars comics, but for now, I'm really glad we've got this book. I've also been a little skeptical about Star Wars comics. I have enjoyed some but never got really excited about too many of them. This one definitely has the potential to change that. Brian Wood is doing what is rarely done, he's writing a Star Wars comic taking place during the time period of the original trilogy. He easily displays that there is a definite gap between movies that could be explored and used to further flesh out the characters, give us new stories while still retaining the true essence of the movies. Carlos D'Anda's art is going to a welcomed addition to the stories. Because it is a first issue, there is the obligatory set up. We are definitely off to a really good start. Now that the time period and premise has been set up, next issue is going to be even better. I cannot wait to see what happens next. This is the sort of Star Wars comic I've been looking for. This book isnt just another cash grab with a Star Wars label; it really is a project that presents what could have been. Now, I could use the remainder of this review to present my doctoral thesis of editing and creativity shaping the shortcomings of the prequel trilogy, but frankly, this comic series will reveal the chasm between an idea and what is eventually produced. While George Lucas may have changed the way we all experience movies, The Star Wars comic book series wont change the comic book medium. However, the imagination that Lucas displayed in the 1970s will be exhibited as only the comics medium can truly allow. Dark Horse Comics has had the Star Wars license for twenty plus years and this is a perfect example of how well they treat the franchise. Here the most loyal or standard of fans can latch onto something with an exciting amount of potential. A lot of what makes Star Wars great is right here in the comic; space battles, likeable characters, impossible odds, and Darth Vader. Finally, Rinzlers use of Luke Skywalker is fantastic. We have no idea who this character truly is yet, but it seems he has taken the mentor role. The script takes enough twists and turns through familiar territory without ever bordering on fan service. What results is incredibly original, weird, and a little overwhelming. In any event, it works more than it doesnt and is bound to get even more compelling with every issue. While a little dense, its nothing a second reading cant solve. It is a really good first issue that sets up three or four story lines and gets the foundation set for a very enjoyable series. It is a shame that it will not be able to see a multiple year run that they expected when the series was developed but hopefully the creators can give the readers some sort of conclusion when the series ends. Star Wars is an intimidating pool to jump in to. If all you know is the original trilogy then I can't even say this book is for you. I think the people that will enjoy this book the most are the ones that tired of the Clone Wars and the greater Expanded Universe and will take any story set in the original film's time period happily. The artwork is surprisingly good. Better than it has been in a while, although not very consistent. You still see the odd panel drawn with less detail. But not too much. The space battles and locales remind me of the old Tales of the Jedi series, one of Dark Horse's earliest Star Wars story arcs and a brilliant series. So find this baby and read it up. You get another adventure with Luke, Leia, Han, Chewie and the rest and this one might be better than the last one you read. This could be another Legacy. Or another KotOR. For a non-fan of the Star Wars Expanded Universe. Id say I was impressed with this comic but not in awe of it really.I'mcertainly not fully converted to the world of Star Wars comics yet, as it still suffers from not quite feeling like Star Wars and more just feels like expansions on elements that are in the films anyway but as I said I am a hard fan to please outside of the films. However,I'min for at least the next couple of issues, just to see if the story itself can keep hold of me. Ill happily hang out with Luke, Han and Leia until I lose interest in yet another between stories story but hey, maybe this time will be different, it's certainly off to a good start. Whilst like the original trilogy, Star Wars #1 is packed full of the aforementioned frivolity. However, science fiction, action adventure has moved on, see Image Comics' Saga by Brian K. Vaughan and Fiona Staples, or any number of modern films ranging from Looper to Moon, Cypher (or Brainstorm) to District 9. I liked the book but it just doesnt click for me. We do get a really cool scene showing off just how badass Princess Leia can be. I really feel like that moment is the only real saving grace of the issue though. Brian Wood is a talented writer but I just havent been impressed with his most recent work creator owned or otherwise. What he has here is the opportunity to craft the last truly great Star Wars tale from Darkhorse. Before the comic rights of course revert back to Disney and are eventually published under Marvel. Whether or not he succeeds of course is entirely dependent on how this series plays out. Read Full Review

The issue ends with Leia reviving a covert mission, and rumors of a spy, from Rebel leader Mon Mothma (her presences also breaks the 1977 theme since she was not known during 1977). Wood's Star Wars is an interesting start to a familiar part of the universes past. Another thing is the art, which sucks. The name of the artist doesn’t matter here because it’s that same repetitive style that tends to creep into these kinds of comics. The panels are placed very rigidly and the art within them looks more computer-created than hand drawn. This is art that only tells the story - it simply brings to life what the written word says.
