I was a little worried about this Superman's Joker story going in.  It's not that I don't trust Greg Pak, because I do, I just didn't know what to expect.  Besides an unnecessary fight with Lobo and Batman being forced to the sidelines, I am really excited to see where this goes.  It's an added bonus that Ardian Syaf's art is the perfect fit for the story, which is something sorely missing for this book since the beginning.  If you were staying away from this book for any reason, this issue is a great jumping in point for anyone and everyone.  I recommend you do so. Greg Pak's Batman/Superman work hasn't been as consistent as his Action Comics run, which is perhaps to be expected when you have such a disparate lineup of artists on board. Pak seems to be settling into a deeper groove with this new arc, however. Read Full Review

Batman Superman #17 was a good comic that pulls readers into the mystery of on who is behind all these attacks. While the previous issue just made the villain too perfect, I like that his crimes have outcomes the affect the world along with messing with Superman in. I'd like to see who else is on Batman and Superman's list of suspects along with how they are going to catch this guy in the next few issues to come. Read Full Review

So the plot isn't really advanced that much here. Instead I think the purpose of this issue was to show how shaken Superman is already. It is more of a character issue than a plot issue.  That said, the 'Regan' moment, the appearance of Lobo as a plot point, and the idea that Lois is an effective lure as a target felt just slightly off. This is the fourth arc in this title since its launch. The arcs that featured the Earth 2 Batman and Superman were both very strong. The one with Toymaster and Mongul fell a bit flat for me. This arc is definitely in the same league as the Earth 2 stories. This is a new type of threat for Superman- a Batman type villain with superpowers that are a match for the Man of Steel. This arc seems to be setting up a situation in which Superman will at some point have to use some of Batmans methods to defeat this killer. This is shaping up to be a very strong story. Maybe Bruce's gambit will pay off, and maybe the next issue of Batman/Superman will be a better read. I'm hopeful, anyway, because the talent on this book has proven that it has the goods to deliver solid work, both in story and art. The first issue of the arc made Clark's situation so dire that I expected the same level of intensity in this one, but instead we're treated to an issue that acts more like filler.
