Commissioner Gordon has dedicated his life to the safety of the citizens of Gotham City. Sure, he doesn't wear a cape, but this hero has chosen a thankless job, because it's the right thing to do. But what happens when Jim Gordon's sense of duty and honor is stripped away? What happens when Gotham City's greatest public pillar of justice finally says "enough"? Spinning out of the events of The Batman Who Laughs and Batman/Superman comes the story of a man who has finally given in to his worst impulses-and he might just take the entire city into the darkness with him...
The shadow of noir narratives is cast in a very intriguing way across the machinations of the Commissioner's one-shot, creating a well-constructed single-issue story that invites readers to follow ahead. Read Full Review
The writing here is spot on. I have never been that big of a Herbert fan but man, does he do a good job here. This is a pretty excellent one shot that tells a great little story and doesn't overstay it's welcome. Read Full Review
A true vigilante with a badge, this is not your 1966 Commissioner Gordon who only talks on a red phone. I hope the influence of Dark Metal continues to influence the DC Universe. "The Year of the Villain" certainly rewrote some chapters. I can't see where this goes! Read Full Review
This issue was fantastic and hopefully sets up a potential good storyline with Batman trying to cure his Infected friend because theres a lot going on in this story that I can get behind. Gordon seeking to destroy Gotham would be an immense change of character and something we havent seen before. The story was great and the art was absolutely fantastic, this is a one-shot worth checking out. Read Full Review
The Commissioner was a solid character study that provided useful insight on a character breakdown stemming from being one of The Infected. Read Full Review
It's still a fun read, but it feels like a missed opportunity for something more. Read Full Review
Overall, Gordon doesn't seem as far gone as some of the Infected " really, only Shazam has been turned into a fully converted villain with no hesitation " so watching him slowly fall from grace is intriguing. Overall, these one-shots rarely seem like they're telling their own story, though. Read Full Review
The writing is mostly good, even though there are some odd creative choices throughout that I end up disagreeing with, such as Gordon having this unicorn key and the lack of Gordon's transition from incorruptible hero to infected commissioner. That said, I still recommend this comic. Read Full Review
To say The Infected: The Commissioner #1is a disappointment is an understatement. Infected or not, I am tired of DC characters, and subsequently, DC Comics writers, using ableist tropes and continuing the narrative that disabled people are broken and helpless. My recommendation to DC Comics is to hire some sensitivity readers. Read Full Review
If you are looking for a confusing and seemingly random issue with the Infected name slapped on it, then this is for you. The rest of us who have known that Gordon has been infected since the middle of last summer can just pass it on by because you will learn nothing else except that Gordon might be able to give Billie Eilish a run for her money if he can get some of his new, dark ideas on wax. The art was incredible, please put this dude on Batgirl.
All in all the plot is rather confusing and it has too much dialogue. Although some of the dialogue is good, this issue didn’t do much for me. It’d be great to see Gordon do a bit more here.
Prelude:
The Infected has had some really mixed issues so far ranging from good to passable and to bad. Let's see where The Commissioner falls on that line.
The Good:
It's interesting seeing Gordon like this.
The Bad:
There is a lot of text.
The story drags and gets a bit boring.
Conclusion:
While Gordon's perspective is interesting, the story is boring and drags with lots of text to read. There's also some wasted potential since Jenkins could have done so much more with this issue.
This is fine, I guess. I don't think this issue succeeded in being as deep as it wanted to be. This is just not a good idea, and the most you get out of it is something middling.
Well god bless, it tried.
