But Why Tho? - William Tucker
Mar 02, 2022Devils Reign: X-Men #2 is a shining example of what tie-ins can be. The story is beautiful and meaningful, altering events from Marvels history. And it is a deeply emotional tale containing a collaboration between two characters. The art and writing are stunning as both character development and awesome comic book action come together. Mar 03, 2022Devil's Reign: X-Men #2 is an intriguing middle chapter that pulls back the curtain on a hidden, darker side of our favorite heroes' and villains' histories. Supported by Phil Noto's excellent art, Gerry Duggan provides a throw-back adventure that doubles as a character study for Emma Frost, expanding and redefining her role in the Marvel universe. Hardly a must-buy, but Duggan has fun writing Emma, Noto does a fine job drawing her and the whole thing is perfectly entertaining for a low-stakes cash-in

This is an enjoyable little issue, that's kind of building on the ideas Marauders set up. So I'm not surprised a lot of people are iffy on this.

The flashback revealing what Fisk has on Emma Frost holds zero surprises, but it's still entertaining thanks to stylish visuals and some witty dialogue. And the present-day twist at the end gives a nice pop of sorely-needed novelty. I should note I'm reading this via Marvel Unlimited, which plays a role in how satisfying I find it. I expect I'd feel quite differently if I were buying it at full cover price.

Peter and Elektra steal the show

I'm partial to Phil Noto's depiction of Emma Frost, so my rating is a bit inflated. The story is fun, albeit a bit forgettable, and I doubt it will have anything to do with the main story, let alone have lasting effects. Still, it's better than most of the other Devil's Reign tie-ins.

It's fine but kinda feels like filler. And 1/3 of a 3 issue mini-series shouldn't feel like filler. Still love Emma though!

Duggan's a bit over obsessed with writing Emma, trying to shoehorn here. It doesn't work, and she doesn't need to be everywhere.
