Amazing Spider-Man (1999) #545

Sep 3, 2023

I don't know what possessed me to reread this after so many years, but I can confirm that it makes me mad. The fact that after over 15 years I can still point to this as the moment that Marvel completely lost my interest in Spider-Man, and haven't fully regained it even to this day, earns this a 1.0 rating.

It's certainly an improvement over Gotham War. But for me Zdarsky is playing with fire by reintroducing the three Jokers, another concept which I wasn't a fan of.

Batman / Superman: World's Finest (2022) Annual: 2024

Jan 31, 2024

DC continues to expand the World's Finest universe with four stories which set up potential future arcs or books. Overall this has left me excited to see where this corner of DC goes next.

Flash (2016) #800

Jun 9, 2023

An all-star line-up of Flash writers and artists return for a largely successful extra-sized anniversary issue. The outgoing creative team of Adams and Pasarin kick things off with a fun tale of a group of villains trading Flash stories. This was a strong start to the issue and reminded me a lot of a certain episode of Batman: The Animated Series. Up next are Waid and Nauck, with a story focusing on Impulse which takes place during his 90s run. This was far and away the highlight of the issue. The chemistry between Wally, Bart and Max Mercury is fantastic and perfectly captured in both the writing and the art. Honestly, if this was the entire issue I'd be giving it a 10. Sadly the following stories from Williamson and Johns don't land quite as well and form the weakest stretch of the issue. Williamson's section is sweet but ultimately ends up feeling rather insubstantial, while Johns's is essentially just a recap of a certain character's history. Fortunately, both stories are redeemed somewhat by great art from Di Giandomenico and Kolins. Things wrap up with Spurrier and Deodato Jr who tease their upcoming run which introduces aspects of cosmic horror. This was considerably darker in tone than the rest of the issue and I'm still not entirely sold on the cosmic horror premise, but with that said I did enjoy this short preview for it was. On the whole this was an entertaining read. Great art throughout and the strength of the Waid/Nauck story in particular make this an easy issue to recommend.

Wonder Woman (2023) #1

A sensational start to a new run. The sense of dread that builds throughout the issue until we finally get the reveal of Diana is masterful. It also probably goes without saying, but Sampere's art is gorgeous throughout. Very interested to see where this one goes.

Unstoppable Doom Patrol (2023) #3

Jun 4, 2023

"The Fast and the Nebulous" delivers on its promise of a fun chase between the Doom Patrol and a couple of Green Lanterns, but also shines during its quieter moments which have more of a road trip vibe. Burnham's art continues to be a highlight, while Culver particularly nails a conversation between Cliff and Larry which references back to the Morrison era. The series has really started to hit its stride with its third issue, which makes it all the more disappointing that this is only a mini-series.

For my money this is the best book DC is putting out right now and I will be genuinely disappointed when it ends next month. One of my favorite things about the series has been the new characters, a lot of which get a chance to shine this issue. While I'm sure Cliff, Jane, Rita and Larry will be back in some form, I hope that characters such as Beast Girl and Degenerate aren't simply forgotten about after this mini.
