Chaos reigns as the first mission for the Birds of Prey has (unsurprisingly) gone sideways. Even with the collective battle prowess of her hand-picked team, did Black Canary bring enough firepower to fight their way off Themyscira?!
Can we just appreciate that Kelly Thompson and the team are kicking butts and taking names, much like their characters? The plot line's insane and it keeps getting better with every page. This series is such a throwback to the great comics that came before and I would recommend this series to people who aren't comic readers knowing they would love it and want more. Birds of Prey #4 is pure fun with a lot of great action and character moments. The pacing of the story led this story gave time to properly present Wonder Woman as an antagonist for the Birds of Prey and then quickly shifting the story to its next big phase. This story answers some questions but it appears that some important sequences were left on the cutting room floor. For this reason the story jumps around and it looks like whole scenes are missing almost like missing an episode of an episodic TV series. Read Full Review
If you've spent money on issues #1-3, you may feel really cheated with the plot developments in Birds of Prey #4. It not only exacerbates the lack of reasoning on Dinah's part in not even attempting to contact Diana for help, it just becomes clear that Thompson literally lost the plot for this arc in the very beginning. Things just don't make sense from a character standpoint, and there are just too many things that just are because Thompson wants them that way instead of them making logical sense based on character and the known world of the DC Universe. Birds Of Prey #4 is a severe miss in an already troubled mini-series. At its core, the plot is flawed. Too many developments happen off-panel, the creative choices frequently don't make sense, and Wonder Woman's big revelation makes the first three issues pointless. With minimal Harley Quinn one-liners (don’t worry, there are still a few there), this might be the best issue in Kelly Thompson’s run yet. The Birds’ battle against the army of Themyscira ups the action and we get significant plot development related to Sin & the reason for Dinah’s plan in the first place. It’s the payoff we’ve been hoping for since the first issue and it’s well worth the wait. Leo Romero's designs and Jordie Bellaire’s colors are just insanely gorgeous. It took an issue or two to warm up to this visual identity but I am SO bought in now. This due nails every scene — action, drama, close-ups, wide-angles, characters, backgrounds, everything. I'm defiitely reading a different book than many of these other reviewers. 10's across the board about how aweome the story and artwork are? Really? For one, the artwork is complete garbage. A Darwyn Cooke ripoff that can't quite makie it work. The coloring is god aweful and the story makes no sense whatsoever. A simple phone call to Diana would have sufficed to have all of this avoided. And the Amazons are chumps in this story. They would not be taken down this easily. At this point, I don't care what happens. Dropping this title.
