If the Birds of Prey have one mission, it's protect Barbara Gordon at all costs, and that mission is...not going great. Dinah and her team search for Barbara in this strange new world that seems specifically designed to trip them up. Many mysteries lurk in the dark of this world, and some of them don't even want to kill you...probably.
You have got to be kidding me. I have no idea what's going on, or what will happen next. Everything about this arc is madness, yet I couldn't put Birds of Prey #9 down. This has been a fantastic run, and I pray that it continues for a long, long time. I'm so happy that we're around to see this new set of characters come together. Read Full Review
I've said it once, I'll say it again, Birds of Prey is one of DC's best books right now. Read Full Review
Great vibes of Venom and Eddie Brock at their funniest. But don't expect to be laughing for longthe reveal at the end of the issue leads to some of the creepiest segments Kelly Thompson has ever written, with Case's art shifting brilliantly to depict a truly horrific monster. The fast pace works very well hereit keeps us in the Birds' shoes as the ground keeps shifting, never letting them or us get our footing. Read Full Review
Case and Guidry deliver some fantastic art in the issue. The visuals continue to be fun and compelling as they showcase the characters beautifully. Read Full Review
Birds of Prey #9 is a lot of set-up for this roadtrip through the Multiverse to save Barbara Gordon. With this being more of an intro to this new story arc the narrative is carried by the Birds of Prey chemistry and the way they react to the first world they visit. Read Full Review
Birds of Preycontinues to struggle to find its footing, never quite recovering from its rocky start, but I still maintain hope that Kelly Thompson will be able to surprise me with how she brings it together. Read Full Review
Birds of Prey #9 strays further from the what makes the Birds of Prey the Birds of Prey. Ill suited humor and a tone and milieu that resembles the Doom Patrol are the biggest culprits. Coupled with the fact that the story barely moves forward, the issue is relies on the out of place elements to carry it. There's little substance to what transpires and it seems to set up a meandering arc that will end in a "surprise. There are some elements that have potential, but not in within the pages of Birds of Prey. Birds Of Prey #9 is a waste of time, space, and money. The plot goes nowhere and makes no sense, Thompson's character work and story structure are abysmal, and the series as a whole is getting worse, not better. Read Full Review
Honestly, if you think the art is bad, you may as well stare at a blank page because you'll get just as much out of that.
This book is a frustratingly mixed bag, but I'm starting to be able to meet it where it is and enjoy it.
I'm enjoying the story for the most part, I like all the characters, but jfc this book is so ugly. The art is SO bad it really detracts from the experience. I've read that some others like the art, I've read other reviews that specifically say the art is the main strong point of the book right now. I don't get it. To each their own, but it's just messy and looks like a bad attempt at old 3-D. That's been my take on this whole series so far, I've enjoyed the writing and the characters but aside from that one really nice looking issue from someone else (I forget), the art has been distractingly atrocious.
Really generic.
Nothing much happens. (Extra point for slight intrigue about some of the breadcrumbs the comic does drop.)
A lukewarm start for Worlds Without End. We have the Birds running around in front a gray background for 20 pages and... Yeah, that about covers it. I get the feeling this will be one of those 6-issue plotlines that could be told in 2 or 3. We'll see. I went back and read #1 again, and that arc opening was so much better; this issue looks even worse by comparison.
SPOILED REVIEW.
Somewhere. In some place they haven’t been long, we find the Birds of Prey in a pile with a few misplaced hands in places they don’t belong. Oddly, while before Big Barda was previously wearing curtains, and the others lingerie, they now all wear strange costumes. Barbara, AKA Oracle is missing and Mia, AKA Meridian, too, though she may not have come, “She was right behind. She certainly tried to come through.”
Dinah, AKA Black Canary, shouts, ‘Barbara!’. From a distance, Barbara responds, ‘Dinah!’ Mari, AKA Vixen, mentions to Dinah, “I can’t access The Red”. Mari, can’t hear, see, smell better now. Barda has more bad news as well, though less on that now.
