You Don't Read Comics - Russ Bickerstaff

It's not easy to bring them to the page in a way that feels like it's being true to their particular energy and personality. This particular creative team is doing a really good job of managing that much. It will be interesting to see where they move with it all as things progress. Van Poelgeest gives the characters personality, Henrichon gives the book grit and visual identity, and Gattoni keeps the weirdness readable. The immediate conflict could have hit harder, and the issue clearly holds some of its bigger cards for later, but as a first issue? Yeah, fam, this does what it needs to do. Darcy Van Poelgeest’s script gets the character voices and the overall sense of weirdness right, and Niko Henrichon’s storybook style is a surprisingly good fit. Beautiful. The trademark Poelgeest sadness is in its bones. The sombre vibes of Precious Metal and Little Bird are felt, but this is its own beast.
I still can't believe it exists.

Difficult to express the level of appreciation for getting doom patrol, deadman, demon and Jonah hex, all in the same year. Outside of getting Wesley Dodds, I’m not sure what else I can ask for from DC.

this was a strong debut issue, I like Negative Man's characterization. This is an issue I will be re-reading again to appreciate it more

Of the three Next Level launches from this week, this was the one I really wasn't sure how I was going to feel about. When it was first announced that DC would be doing a new Doom Patrol book, I, like many others, immediately thought Deniz Camp would be writing it (since he was announced to be doing a Next Level book). For months and months and months, I was just waiting for the announcement to drop. Finally, the cover came out and I read that the writer would be none other than...Darcy Van Poelgeest? I wasn't mad at that whatsoever, but I've never read anything from him (at the time of this writing), so I had no idea what to expect.
