DC Comics News - Matthew Lloyd Dec 26, 2023

Justice Society of America #8 is another excellent issue and in some ways perhaps the best of the series. Mikel Janin turns in another wonderful job on art and Geoff Johns continues building his world with interesting and engaging character aspects for Ruby, Helena and Alan. It's a can't miss issue with the Legionnaire reveal at the end. Read Full Review

Justice Society of America #8 was certainly better than the last issue. However, I feel this series seems to be lacking direction and focus with a forced agenda at the helm. Read Full Review

Weird Science - Gabe Hernandez Dec 27, 2023

Justice Society Of America #8 continues Huntress's self-serving recruitment drive to Russia when Alan Scott tracks down the daughter of the original Red Lantern. Johns liberally hints at a deeper story about the relationship between Alan Scott and Agent Sorkov, possibly in connection to the current Alan Scott miniseries, which could be an interesting dramatic twist. However, the constant delays are a momentum killer, and the series' hook is too weak to make this a must-read. Read Full Review

    AIPT - Christopher Franey Dec 26, 2023

The mysteries from the Lost Children and the Thirteen are getting some answers and interactions, which is excellent. Yet, with each revelation, there is a new situation. Johns, Janin, and Bellaire entertain with the Golden Age Red Lantern and connections to Alan Scott. What will be Ruby's ultimate choice be in our current timeline, and could she prove Huntress wrong about her future JSA team? The revelations will keep readers in suspense. Read Full Review

Truly stellar work. I love the new Red Lantern lore, and the twist at the end was amazing. I couldn't ask for much more.

Geoff Johns shows again why he’s the goat, nobody writes and understand these characters like him, he elevates them and makes them feel real. I will miss his writing at DC, will follow his career at image ofc.

Hands down the best issue of the series and one of the best single issues I've had the pleasure of reading this year, JSA #8 is something that calls back to a better time in comics through a combination of mature, complex writing and dynamic, dazzling art. Mikel Janin might very well be putting out some of the best work of his career in these pages -- astounding, expressive, and amazingly capable of capturing minute details & emotions. Geoff Johns' JSA has always felt like a passion project, and this issue definitely emphasizes that passion and the writer's long association and familiarity with these characters.

In many ways, it feels like coming home for any longtime JSA fan. Alan Scott, in particular, is the heart of this story more

The spark for the series is still there, this issue proves it. Ruby is a dynamic character that brings necessary conflicts to the JSA and Huntress. Helena has been the primary character of this team book, I see why Johns chose her over many others too and that’s because of her compassion and empathy. This issue has a good mix of deep diving into the character’s thoughts and feelings, while also being very action oriented.

I do enjoy these issues. I am sad though that this is just 12 issue mini and with Geoff leaving for Ghost Maker Imprint, I dont know who will take these stories over. Or does this just die and we never get anymore JSA after this. I like Ruby so far. It is an interesting tale of Huntress trying to form a redemption team while the current iteration of the JSA mostly think its a terrible idea. I look forward to it but hope more JSA occurs after this and we dont end it all with this story arc.

The Alan scene better not be trying to tie into the current Alan dumpsterfire mini-series. 1) The sales of that are so bad no one will understand what is being implied 2) That series is written so poorly that it doesnt even match up with this more

2 issues in 2 months?! Maybe there’s hope, even though we know Geoff’s time is limited. This is one of the best issues to date, with a great mix of compelling storyline, intriguing mysteries, and good character work as we’ve come to expect from Johns. Janin’s artwork is gorgeous and raises the standard on this book to a very high bar!

I thought it was OK, but DC is banking on the reader wanting to pick up and read the new Green Lantern Alan Scott book. Sorry DC, but I only got space on my pull list for one GL book and that's by Adams and Xermanico!

I don't know why it took Johns this long to get to introducing Ruby aka The Red Lantern but I'm glad it happened. Was a bit too much talk-no-jutsu in this issue for my taste but I'm happy to see the plot move on from Helena and focus on the new villain along with the mystery box ending we got at the ending. Unfortunately, I don't know who these characters are so the call backs falls flat upon my reading.
