As Peter Parkers friends strive to help him cast out a possessing spirit, three people test the limits of their bravery, ingenuity, and willingness to sacrifice to answer a question that will determine their destiny in Amazing Spider-Man #54. Read Full Review
What unfolds is the sort of finale that ought to define heroism and will remind readers why Amazing Spider-Man is still the standard in superhero comics. Read Full Review
McGuiness delivers some great art throughout the issue. I love the vibrant and detailed art style and how it reflects the emotions of the characters. Read Full Review
The ending of the battle is a little lackluster to say the least. You'd figure that with as much history as Peter & Norman have with the Green Goblin that the battle would be a little more extravagant, but that's not the case here. Read Full Review
Amazing Spider-Man #54 is a relief but also a burden. It's an unnecessarily repetitive chapter in a plot that doesn't make much sense and has gone on for far too long. At least we know Norman is no longer the Green Goblin, seemingly for good, and the story can move on from this tired concept. Read Full Review
Amazing Spider-Man #54 brings the Spider-Goblin saga to a close with solid art and an ending that feels final. Sadly, the script can't find a balance between drama and humor, the sci-mystical elements of the fight can't abide its rules consistently, and the net result reads like a comic that's a goofy mess. The main issues with the arc are that the premise seemed redundant, and the resolution felt rushed.
However, the strengths of this issue more than make up for it. Peter in this arc has been pretty dang competent. And his plan worked pretty much perfectly, and the delivering back on the anniversary issue way back when? Fantastic. That splash page is an all timer too. Ed McGinnis needs a nice long vacation.
I didn't expect this to go this way. I wanted to like the big hero moment more than I did. I'm kinda jaded, I guess.
Honestly it’s just disappointing how much the ball was dropped to start Wells’s run was, Paul and the unforgettable villain from that story arc set Wells up way behind the 8 ball. While this current arc wasn’t bad, it did have its problems and feels easier to pick apart because of the dislike of his earlier issues.
I enjoyed Wells’s work prior to him getting on Amazing Spider-Man, I hope the backlash he received here hasn’t disheartened him and he turns it around in the next book he does. He’s got 6 issues left, I hope he finishes ok.
As far as conclusions go for Zeb Wells, this is one of his better ones. The bouncing back and forth of the Goblin between Norman and Peter, Peter and Norman got really annoying and we could have seen an inner struggle for Peter longer than a single splash page but what we got was decent. Exploring more of those pivotal moments in Peter and Spider-Man's life being slowly poisoned or stripped away by the Goblin would have been more interesting and now it's just... gone. Poof. We're going to get more of a resolution soon I'm sure. Wells loves his epilogues instead of just giving us a fulfilling conclusion but with what we got here I don't hate any of it.
The two-page spread is amazing. McGuinness once again showcases how good he is as an artist.
This arc, like this book has definitely been uneven. Not sure if this ending is deserved, but I'm satisfied with it. Interested to see what happens next.
It works but barely and so many questions that I ultimately don't care enough to think about. Read it and forget it as soon as you close the book. At this point I'm consuming recycled material that looks amazing thanks to McGuiness on art who is outstanding!! Wells man what in the world was this?? 2 years of this is insane. I liked almost everything he wrote for Marvel since the late 2000s but this was a big miss.
Art: 3.5/5
Story: 3/5
Total: 6.5/10
Another issue where it just coasts by with little intrigue. I will admit. I do like that they didn't flip Norman back. At least for now.
while I do like how spidey breaks free of the sins on who spidey is, the lead up and execution could have been better. It's not bad, but it feels hollow and empty.
