Fly into director Richard Donner’s Superman once more in Superman ’78! Written by Robert Venditti (Superman: Man of Tomorrow) and drawn by Wilfredo Torres (Batman ’66), Superman ’78 tells a brand-new adventure in the world of the beloved film. A bright, shining day in Metropolis is interrupted by a mysterious drone that crash-lands in the city and starts wreaking havoc. This looks like a job for Superman! But where did the metallic menace come from, what is its purpose, and who is Brainiac?

But Why Tho? - Collier "CJ" Jennings Jan 1, 1970

Superman '78 #1 is not only a solid continuation of the first Supermanfilm, but it also serves as a loving tribute to the cast and crew who crafted said film. If you love Donner's Superman films or the Man of Steel's pre-Crisis adventures, you'll want to pick this book up. Once again, fans will believe that a man can fly. Read Full Review

This was an absolute treat. The story isn't a quick read but I flew through it joyfully. I even reread it immediately after I read it the first time, a surefire sign of a fun comic. Can't wait for more. Brilliant. Read Full Review

Overall, "Superman '78" was off to an exciting start. The next issue will bring Lex Luthor back, and I'm curious to see how he'll fit into the storyline. Here's hoping they can improve the pacing in the next few issues. Read Full Review

    Kabooooom - Matt Morrison Aug 25, 2021

I could practically hear the familiar John Williams' score as I read Superman '78 #1 and I imagine many other superhero fans who grew up believing that a man could fly will find the same enjoyment in this book that I did. I just hope this book proves successful enough for a sequel and that we might see Robin Williams as Mr. Mxyzptlk; one of many "what might have been?" possibilities for the unmade Superman sequels. I've loved Venditti's Hawkman but this is his second attempt at Superman after the Man of Tomorrow run and it feels the same, decent but boring, guess it's a little unfair since my expectations were higher for my favorite version of Supes but I don't know, nothing here got me excited.

Finally, a Superman series worth reading in this day and age. I'd expect nothing less from Robert Venditti though. I guess DC wanted a real writer for this series, as his digital Man of tomorrow stories were the only sense of decency in the era of Bendis.
I don't really know if I can say it gives me the feel of the original movies, but it's a good take on introducing Brainiac into that continuity. Sadly we never would've gotten this in those days because the special effects necessary for a Brainiac robot like that were very expensive and just not too likely in those days. But this helps make it as if it were possible.
All-in-all, this story is a much needed breath of fresh air from the disastrous regular Superman books they put ou more

The nostalgia train continues! Like the Batman series, it uses plans from Superman III to take the movie in a new direction. Hopefully Brainiac can be a better villain than what that movie became in his place. Because Venditti and Torres capture the likeness of the actors and the personalities of their characters so well.

I don't have any affinity for the Richard Donner movies, in fact I barely remember them, but this was good. I liked this.
