Wonder Woman (2011) #36

Dec 9, 2014

I've seen a lot of people giving opinions on this one and now that I've finally read it here's my reaction: I enjoyed it. Wonder Woman #36 is the first issue from the team of Meredith and David Finch and they had some huge shoes to fill following Brian Azzarello and Cliff Chiang. And rather than try to continue in the same manner as the previous team, this one has chosen to forge a new path that feels different in just about every way. That actually serves in their story's favor. The writing (specifically the dialog) feels mostly natural and easy to follow. It uses some interesting, if cliche', metaphors about the power of natural forces and Diana does act a bit impulsive for someone who just went through such huge character-defining moments in the previous arc, but here's the larger point: This isn't the previous arc or creative team nor should it be expected to be. Obviously not everyone is going to be on board with this take on the character. But I want to address one complaint I've seen over and over again regarding a scene with a teddy bear. It was implied in many reviews that she carries it everywhere and uses it as a security blanket and nothing could be further from the truth. She sees mass devastation and the bear belonged to a dead child. She recovers it and holds it as a reminder of the weight of her position as a Justice League member, God of War and Queen of the Amazons. David Finch's art is also not going to be for everyone. He has a certain style that, if you're not into it, can be a real turn-off. He draws Diana in a more youthful look that some might take as over-sexualizing, but honestly the shower scene I saw so many complaints about was less revealing than her first scene in Wonder Woman #1. She does seem to have more insecurities than she should have, but most of that seems to melt away when she gets to Paradise Island. The real meat of the issue is the story that's brewing there and we're likely getting lots more of that in issue #37
