Batman & Robin: Year One #5 is another fantastic entry in this series and possibly the best yet. Mark Waid and Chris Samnee have maintained momentum that shows no signs of slowing down. DC Comics News - Matthew Lloyd Feb 19, 2025

Batman and Robin: Year One #5 demonstrates why this is one of the top two Bat-titles at DC Comics right now. It's running neck and neck with Batman and Robin written by Phillip Kennedy Johnson. Is it a coincidence that they both feature Batman and Robin? Probably. They are tonally different, but both of excellent quality as they both balance the action with character moments. Year One will take the top spot if fun is your thing! Either way you can't miss with this series! Read Full Review

Samnee and Lopes nail the details when Batman is drowning in the clay and artistically capture the difficulty in how Clayface can melt and mold himself. When it comes to Batman moving amongst the shadows, the aspect is drawn well by Samnee, and the color mash-ups between Haegan moving in the light and Bats in the dark are seamless. Read Full Review

    Batman-News - Chip Ross Feb 19, 2025

Well, almost halfway through the series and I must say, I'm cautiously optimistic. A nice balance of characters, the dynamics between the cast are well-written and the pacing is very good considering how much is going on. And that's without talking about the stunning visuals. I will keep my caution up regarding the number of characters though. I think I may have seen a certain feline fiend skulking around a panel or two… Read Full Review

    AIPT - Christopher Franey Feb 19, 2025

Overall, Batman and Robin: Year One #5 is an entertaining issue in the Year One saga that shows Robin has a long way to go regarding allies like Alfred and Gordon. While the Boy Wonder shrugs off the problems he causes, he learns that the problems won't let him go. Dick is causing issues in his life as a ward, student, and hero that are going to play beneficial to the General's actions toward Gotham. Bruce has a long way to go before he can play the part of mentor and father while he is still trying to be the Dark Knight. Waid and Samnee deliver a great story as they forge a Dynamic Duo. The Batman Universe - D.M. Grant Feb 20, 2025

With Robin captured at the end of Batman and Robin: Year One #5 's cliffhanger, we've got the opportunity to focus on his headspace in that situation. But with how the book's been written for a while now, I doubt we won't simply cut to Batman's plan to rescue him and spend the whole pencil mileage detailing that until Robin's back in the cave, with no look into his thought process throughout. I hope Waid proves me wrong. Read Full Review
