Home is surely a series to keep an eye on as the voices within deserve to be heard. What awaits Juan now that his powers are free remains to be seen. There are many questions that we have, and more issues ahead that I believe will provide those answers. But as a starter to the series, Home #1 is a great and powerful debut. It is hard hitting and touches on several difficult to swallow truths. It is a here-and-now story that should absolutely be read by everyone. Home #1 is a powerful read that grabs readers early and never let's go. The cruelty of American immigration is laid bare for all to see, but that's only part of the story. Juan and his powers inform the rest of it, and it will be interesting to see how the book answers all of the questions this first issue poses. 'Home' #1 is an unflinching depiction of what happens to asylum seekers who are separated from their children. It's a superhero story in essence but the reality of these acts of cruelty by our own government still enrage and hurt. Anta and Wieszczyk put a name and a face to this travesty in the hopes that empathy and understanding replace blind xenophobia. 'Home' is one of the most important and timely comics there is. There was part of me going into this series worried it was going to be a political, anti establishment story and I couldn't have been more wrong. The five-issue mini-series has a super-hero slant, which is introduced late in the issue as a frightened Juan displays powers for the first time. While this will obviously become a larger part of the story going forward, the first issue focuses on Juan and his mother and the deeply cynical setting which ripped their family apart and provided the crucible for Juan's pain and transformation. Home #1 isn't perfect and has some bumps in its narrative but it's an important read. The end of the comic is a bit rocky and doesn't match the quality of everything up to that point. Some dialogue feels a bit comical in its delivery, an unfortunate distraction. But, the majority of the comic is heartbreaking. I have high hopes for this title because it does have quite a flavorful concept, set across a contentious backdrop. Home #1 captures a lot of heart and emotion, and I had a lot of anger, and confusion too. I have actually read into the mistreatment of asylum seekers during the Trump administration and, as much as the Trump simps here don't want to admit it, this portrayal is accurate, all the way down to the notorious "Icebox." Several children died of untreated sickness, thousands report sexual abuse, and for a period of time there was no attempt to keep records that would allow parents to be reunited with their children, which is why so many still have not been reunited today. Everyone who denies these events out of some misguided sense of nationalist pride is complicit and deserving of their role as the modern comic book villain. Keep crying.
The story is about a boy unfairly sent to prison who uses weird telekinetic powers to protect himself from abusers. No, wait, that's the plot of Hard Time by Steve Gerber. Well, it's also the plot of this story. The writing is good, the art is great, but I'm concerned that the first issue reads like a blatant rip-off of Hard Time. The setting changed a bit -- Hard Time started with a school shooting, and Home started with a border crossing -- but still pretty much the same thing.

Pure trash and nothing but propaganda, no research done to try and get to the truth and maybe figure out a solution. This book exists solely to denigrate white men. Every single Caucasian is a laughable parody of a white supremacist down to the tribal tattoos that I suppose the artist associates the evil white man with. There’s always a maniacal Hitleresque white officer making his gentle and kind PoC officers enforce his demands. So that any women or PoC’s working there are really kind and gentle souls also being kept down by “the man”. I thought Bordertown was as bigoted as we were gonna get but “Home” takes the cake. This is basically just a Trump Administration hit piece where all the white Border Patrol Agents are evil and just hate all the people coming to America. They make it seem like everyone coming to the US border is seeking asylum and are mistreated when they get here. This couldn't be further from the truth.
Blatant propaganda, As if we're not subjected to this sort of poison at every turn.
A pure propaganda play full of misinformation.
