A return to horror anthology feels like a good move for Marvel. The initial issue lurks around in the potential of such a series with a clever, little plot structure featuring stories that are breezy, little narrative chills. If you like horror comics then you will definitely dig Crypt of Shadows #1. Ewing writes a delectable horror tale. The art is a little bit of hit and miss and I do wish it was broken up into three separate stories though. All in all, I had a good time reading the issue and hope Marvel does a few more of these. I was amazed that this was THAT good but it was! It was definitely written in a throw-back style with love from classic horror and twists. Makes me yearn for Marvel to do this title again...and again...and again...

Leave it to Al Ewing to make an obsolete genre fascinating. This is a classic weirdie anthology - except the usually-unrelated stories are all one story, united with darkly ironic twists. The art is simple stuff that allows you to concentrate on the script, and that yarn definitely rewards the attention.

THE GOOD:

-I thought this issue had a really nice nostalgic feel to it. Ewing did a good job of capturing that.

-The anthology format was good. It definitely a nice way to make it feel like you were getting more bang for your buck.

-I thought the twist at the end was very good. Definitely didn't see that coming.

-"A Moment of Madness" was the only one that actually scared me. The end of that story was legitimately disturbing.

-All the artists did a good job of making the issue feel atmospheric and creepy.

-I think Al Ewing is the new comic book master of horror. This wasn't anywhere near the caliber of the Immortal Hulk, but it proves he knows the genre very well.

-Ultimately, I had a fun time with this issue.

THE BAD:

-I don't feel like this was long enough. It felt like the stories needed more pages than they got.

-"Grave Danger" was my least favorite of the stories. It didn't feel like anything special. more

Yeah, this was a fun issue. I think Al Ewing is killing it with the horror over at Immortal Hulk. This wasn't as good as that, but still a good read.

This has more of a campy feel to it. And I think that was intentional. Since that's more in line with the horror anthologies. If you follow Ewing, you'll see his style change dramatically depending on what you're reading. Like Rocket was a heist movie in comic form and Infinity Wars: Iron Hammer was written like a 60s Marvel comic.

Cool! The only other Ewing comic I read was his Ultimates, which was a very good cosmic-level series IMO. I do love 60s Marvel comics, so I know I'm going to read Iron Hammer now.

This was a fun little throwback to horror anthologies.

Al Ewing is awesome, but this didn't stick the landing. I really dug the first two-thirds, but I didn't love the ending. Art was decent though, and it was a decent effort overall.
