At the heart of this story is comedy, adventure, and a little bit of mystery. It is a welcome reprieve from the heady uneasiness of HoX/PoX. Duggan delivers a fun, interesting issue and assembles a great group of characters to embark on a totally unique premise. Lolli does a fantastic job with both expression and action in the issue. It all portends great things for the future of the Dawn of X and Marvels reinvigoration of the X-Men publishing line. Read Full Review

Make no mistake: this is an oddball team, and the lighter, more swashbuckling tone may seem a bit at odds with the more sterile and high-concept ideas that Hickman is playing with. But it works. Nothing about Marauders #1 feels like it wouldn't exist within the same world that the Summers family and their weird moon-based family from X-Men #1 live in. Read Full Review

If you are looking for that one fun X-Book of the bunch, right now I have a good feeling that book will be Marauders. The first issue proved to us that there is going to be a good reason for a lot of these books and different teams. Is it important to have to read Marauders to understand everything else unfolding in the mutant world? Not really, but this is one that you are going to pick up for an X-Book you are going to get anywhere else. Read Full Review

All together, for a #1, Marauders establishes its premise well, even as it is working on some of the characterizations. The art isn't spectacular, but it is up to the task. We also get a few of the graphic info pages, the fine print of which continues to earn Tom Muller a nomination for an award in my book. I'm not disappointed in picking this one up and look forward to where the mutant pirates of Krakoa set sail next. Read Full Review

    Newsarama - David Pepose Oct 22, 2019

By the time you finish reading Marauders #1, this book's high concept will click into place, and you'll understand the idea of Kitty Pryde and her "mutant pirates" in a way that makes more sense than, say, a throwback to Nightcrawler's 1990s era hoop earring and buccaneer boots. Admittedly, Duggan doesn't necessarily capitalize on his page count in terms of introducing the rest of his characters, but his take on Kitty is a winning one, and hopefully as this series picks up steam, Marauders will shore up some extra goodwill for its high seas high concept. Comic Book Revolution - Rokk Oct 24, 2019

Marauders #1 is a disappointing read. The basic concept for this new team is cool. But, the quality of writing and execution of the concept is poor. Marauders #1 is also a comic that comes with a heavy cover price of $5.00. There is simply no way I can recommend readers drop that kind of entertainment dollar for Marauders #1. $5.00 will nearly pay for one month of the new Disney+ streaming service! There are far better ways to spend your entertainment dollar. And there are so many other superhero titles currently on the market that are way more worth your hard-earned dollar. Read Full Review

Amazing introduction to Kitty Pryde’s new status quo. She has a very unique problem that really makes you feel for her. The way she chooses to work through that problem is both highly entertaining and a great example of why Kitty Pryde is an all-time great X-Man. Supporting cast is also top notch, definitely the team I’m most excited about in Dawn of X. Text pages that Hickman has been using are employed here to hilarious effect. Gerry Duggan is just good at writing humor. I hope they show more Bishop in the next issue, because he doesn’t get much here, but Marauders has got me hooked already.

Honestly when I read the initial solicitation for this series I was worried it wasn’t going to be my thing, but I’d end up reading it anyway because Kitty Pryde is my favorite character. I was wrong. This book is great! It’s fun, with a lot of action, some unanswered questions and a good pace to the story. The art is perfect, it definitely matches the feel of the book. I can’t wait for the next issue! This is definitely going to be the Dawn of X book to beat in my humble opinion!

Awesome start from this series. There's so much cool worldbuilding that takes place within this issue, and that was surprising given that Hickman isn't writing this book. Kitty works as the main character, providing a problem and flaw that she's working to solve throughout the series. The rest of the cast is also written very well, particularly Iceman and Emma Frost. Art is really good too. If each of these X-Men books seems to be a different genre (X-Men: action/adventure, Marauders: Pirate/Fantasy, Excalibur: Sci-Fi, New Mutants: Horror, X-Force: Spy, Fallen Angels: Thriller), I could definitely get into this new X-Men direction.

Dawn of X is off to a killer start, and so is Marauders. While it looks like Marauders will be one of the weaker Dawn of X titles, Marauders 1 was nonetheless an exciting and intriguing start. The dynamic between Kitty, Bobby, and Ororo had me reminiscing the Claremont years, Lolli’s art fits Duggan’s tone perfectly

    GTMedia Reviews Nov 4, 2019

So with House of X, Powers of X and X-Men #1 out of the way we get the first X-Book under the Dawn of X banner not written by Johnathan Hickman. I was gonna review X-Men #1 but I didn't care enough to throw 1000 words up about it so I figured I'd start here. I could have also reviewed Excaliber #1 but, fuck that book.

I was nervous about reading the non-Hickman X-Men books. It's been hit and miss but Marauders #1 was pretty good. The biggest change for me was seeing Kitty Pride A.K.A. Kate as a badass. She's had some ninja training since the '80s but she's never really embraced the role as she does here. I like the dynamic that is quickly established here between Kate and Emma. They don't have the best relationship but its nowhe more

    THE GOOD:

-I quite liked this issue. Maybe even more than X-Men #1, if I'm being honest.

-I like the ideas of mutants that can't enter Krakoa. I also like how fleshed out Hickman's X-World is.

-Kitty Pryde is a super fun main character. This is the best incarnation of the character in a very long time.

-I really like Gerry Duggan's dialogue. I'm not super familiar with him as a writer, but I can say that his plots always seem to be pretty basic, but the personality he adds on top of them makes the issues worthwhile.

-This did such a great job with the charts and graphics. Duggan took what Hickman established and made it his own, adding a really welcome level of character and humor. more

    SUMMARY
Not as breathtaking story as everything else but a great start. good story, particularly in how it showcases how bad ass kitty ( i mean kate ) has become. I wonder what they'll do next?

    THE BEST BITS
    1. bobby saying "i'd like to meet these top men" and a bubble originating from an off panel wolverine saying "did you get it?" it's part woke part meta and not too overbearing on both fronts. I had to google duggan immediately. I think there was a lot of thought that was put into that one single interaction. BRAVO.
    2. Sassy sinister's rumor mill is back! Such a pleasure.
    3. oh the colors on this one. gradients of pink and orange, blues and yellows,
    4. that fight scene that went on for a coupl more

I love the character of Kate Pryde. I'm glad she is a team leader for one of the books. I liked this first issue but I have to say I found Kate's actions a bit on the ruthless side. She's not usually so savage. Leaving a gun in the legs of those 2 men was out of character for her. I wonder if this is just a new direction they are taking her or if it's going to end up Emma's doing? It will be interesting to find out.
