The issue continues what is, overall, a fun and engaging storybut it doesn't offer many answers just yet. We still don't know why Hellgate has challenged Spider-Man, beyond the vague influence of a mysterious voice that only he seems to hear. The identity and motives of the stranger who arrived in New York back in issue #1 remain a mystery as well. And then there's the wildcard: is Captain Kintsugi a genuine young hero in the making, or just a kid in over his head, as Spidey suspects? Read Full Review

Amazing Spider-Man #8 is a bruising, emotionally resonant entry that uses strong visual techniques and smart writing to elevate a knock-down, drag-out fight into something with heart and thematic depth, though it stumbles a bit with clarity and wider continuity references. Read Full Review
The Amazing Spider-Man #8 earns points on the artistic and emotional fronts, but it feels far too similar to the previous issue and includes Spider-Man making some questionable choices during his battle. Read Full Review
While some dents are buffed out of this arc by the developments withinThe Amazing Spider-Man #8, this story is still racing to put tracks in front of train as it barrels past them. Thematic developments, while greatly appreciated and conceptually strong, are potential squandered by the mess of pacing that led up to this issue's final moment. Read Full Review
If there is one thing that Joe Kelly, John Romita Jr, and Todd Nauck are nailing with this latest Amazing Spider-Man story is the sense of danger. There is constant concern about how Spider-Man can survive the battle against Hellgate. Read Full Review
Amazing Spider-Man #8 swings big and lands hard. Sometimes in your gut, sometimes on the page. Half trauma, half lesson, with just enough wit to keep it lively, this issue isn't afraid to take its shots even if it leaves a bruise or two in the process. The story may be running in place by the end, but it's never dull. Read Full Review
Plot
Spider-Man fights with all his might against Hellgate, while simultaneously trying to protect the bystanders caught in the middle of this battle.
Spider-Man is physically overwhelmed by Hellgate, although both take blows. Spider-Man is more defeated and, by protecting the victims, is at Hellgate's mercy. Spider-Man refuses Captain Kintsugi's help. During this battle, Peter remembers when Uncle Ben taught him how to box and how to learn when to back down from a fight.
Mary Jane sees in the news how Peter is being mercilessly beaten and goes to help him.
A shocking installment full of action and super-violent fights, where the mysterious origin of Hellgate has yet to be revealed.

Kelly is doing a great job capturing the inner monologue of Spider-Man.
JRJR still can only draw one face.
I hope Paul Rabin gets erased from history and from fans’ memories.
It's not bad. I actually was entertained. But we've seen this type of story a million times. Fighting while talking.
I love spider-man, but the art is so bad. It looks like a toddler drew it.
Can JRJR's art get any worse? Yes it can.
I think I'll skip the rest of this arc and wait for Pepe Larraz to return.
They should fire Romita. Spider-man is one of the most agile heroes in the Marvel universe then why his fight looks so static and lame? Did they not learn anything from the Bruno Redondo and Tom Taylor run of Nightwing? Romita ruining my favorite character one issue at a time.
Spider-man is a HUGEEEE license, recent movies are easily bringing billions, they could have build a whole new fan base, Spider-man have momentum, but they can't create a decent spider-man run. I'm sure their sales numbers are shit. Spider-man could be the most selling comic book. They are content with average numbers when Spidey should be a top 3 and a cash cow for marvel comic.
Reminds me of Spidey getting brutally beaten in a desperate, overmatched fight against Morlun, which reminded me of Spidey getting brutally beaten in a desperate, overmatched fight against the Juggernaut way back in the day. And while Tombstone's not in the same league, that last fight had Spidey getting brutally beaten a lot too.
