One of the best things about what Fraction and Aja do in "Hawkeye" is that it works completely free of continuity -- something easy to overlook in the general brilliance of this book. Though you would be a fool not to pick up the first two issues, you simply don't have to. This is one of those rare books that transcends the superhero medium, at once perfecting it, and eschewing it almost entirely, resulting in something with the personality of a Marvel comic, but the attitude and feel of an indie. This is Matt Fraction doing what he loves, and it's obvious on the page. He's definitely a writer that works best when he can focus on a character that really appeals to him, and let his voice come through, and fortunately, Marvel seems smart enough to be letting him do just that with Hawkeye. I wouldn't be surprised if Hawkeye is one of Marvel's top books for the forseeable future. Even though it's not launching as a Marvel NOW! title it is definitely a future of Marvel title that they need to promote. I saw a lot for issue #1, but since then it's all promo for Marvel NOW! Marvel, don't leave great books like this hanging while you focus on the future. This is a new title, this is also the future. And I see a strong future due to amazing characters (one who is an Avenger and one who I hope will reappear in the new Young Avengers), a writer who will be doing amazing things in Marvel NOW (remember, Fraction is also taking overFantastic Four andFF), and a visual trifecta of Aja, Hollingsworth and Chris Eliopoulos bringing the visuals to bed. I am more than willing to argue that Hawkeye has earned its place next to Daredevil as Marvels best series. Both of these titles seem to get stronger with every issue. Fraction is crafting a brilliant character piece here that should delight comic fans. David Ajas art has such a simple style and incredible feel that everyone will feel at home, especially with Matt Hollingsworth providing the incredible colour scheme. David Aja and Matt Hollingsworth make sure that all that craziness look so damn fine. It's gorgeous stuff. There's something wonderful on every single page. The action moves perfectly, and the humor is so spot on it's ridiculous. The scene were Hawkeye has his nude battle has a moment that'll seriously make you laugh out loud. This is a comic book. This is one of the more polished, meaningful examples of good comics I've read in a while. Matt Fraction has a complete understanding of his intentions and how he wants to write Hawkeye. This is a Marvel ongoing series that doesn't feature alien invasions, mutant menaces, evil masterminds, or brainwashed superheroes - this is a series about life's real problems being dealt with in way less based in reality. I look forward to this release every month. The art is stunning but also has this sense of not being detailed enough, but it works. The writing is top notch and every month they manage to make Clint even more sarcastic and funny. What makes it better is Kate stays right there with him and deals it right back. Comics this good don't happen on accident. This isn't something that Matt Fraction and David Aja just “lucked into.” These first three issues show off the Marvel Method at its very best, with incredibly visual storytelling and a clever script that avoid ever getting in the way of each other. It's a bit early to claim this the best series Marvel is currently publishing, but that's only because we have yet to see what artist Javier Pulido has to offer. If the next issue is just as great, or even near as good, as this issue and the two before it, it will take the crown from the current reigning champion — i.e., whatever you think is better, even though you are, as a pure matter of fact, wrong. At any rate, the bottom line for this issue is that it once again displays Fraction's writing ability in a very positive light, but the artwork continues to fail and actually manages to become laughable, though not in the way intended. That said, I would say this issue may provide some sense of positivity for the title, and if it manages to continue pushing forward with this kind of writing, maybe this ongoing won't fall victim to the same fate as the others Hawkeye has been given… but they really need to change the art team quick.
