RAMPAGE! Feelings are hard. ORPHAN-MAKER doesn’t like feeling that he’s not NANNY’s little boy anymore…and what more sensible, mature action is there to take than to storm the fortress of their enemies THE RIGHT in a bid to get back in her good graces? It's a wonderful, terrible climax for Hellions - exactly the sort of capstone this excellent series merited. Read Full Review
The Hellions must go on one final mission as one of their own is on the loose and great tragedy is on the horizon for this motley crew of mutants. Truly this is one of the best standout books of this new X-Men era as it deals deeply with trauma, brokenness, found family, and the eternal struggle to find one's place and purpose in an ever-changing world. Hellions #17 is the books penultimate issue, and its a tragedy. Wells sets up an amazing story, Segovias artworks brilliantly, and the story has a great ending. This book is the direction the X-men books should be taking, but most of them cant hold a candle to it. The fact that great books like this keep ending and the remaining books are so mixed in quality is a problem the X-Men line will have to deal with in the future. Read Full Review
With Madelyne Pryor popping up next issue, it's anyone's guess where these characters go from here. One thing's for certain, however: they're a more cohesive team than ever. It's also certain Orphan-Maker will be seeing repercussions very soon in what is an exciting and action-packed issue. Hellions #17 is sparked by an emotional ending in more ways than one. In so many words, Wells was connecting mutant hate and murder of the Right with the Religious Right. When Susan screams out, The Day of the Lord is Here, what other insinuation could there be? And its these ideas in media and pop culture that give Christianity the cringe and disgust thats just not there to anyone who actually takes a deep dive and inspects it for themselves. Sure, the Right is an extremist mutant group but there is nor should there ever be a connection between massacring mutants and Christianity. Read Full Review
"Mutant scum!"
Hellions delivers in what a lot of comics that label themselves "gritty" and "dark" wish they could do. Genuinely shocking, funny, memorable, and thematic.
The team regroups to go after Orphan-Maker and Nanny. Disaster ensues as Orphan-Maker goes on a killing spree following Nanny's death. Things are looking pretty bad for the team; especially Orphan-Maker. I'm very sad this series is ending but I trust Wells will give us a satisfying conclusion.
This is such a fun series.
Despite the (relatively) straightforward plot and the dark ending, there are some real sparks of character work earlier on. The terse script leaves a lot of room for visual storytelling; though I would have liked a little more expression-work, the art is overall very good.
