Fire & Ice: Welcome to Smallville (2023) #6

Awful. Terrible writing and dialogue. A slap in the face to Fire and Ice fans. I can't believe critics read this and actually thought it was good.

This issue wasn't as bad as usual, but the status quos of Mary Jane and Ben Reilly are still very frustrating and leave a bad taste, even if the story is more compelling than usual. I still don't get why Spider-Man and the X-Men didn't give Ben his memories back in Dark Web like they did for Madelyne Pryor. It's such a big plot hole that it makes the Chasm stuff seem really forced.

Not good at all. And what's up with Xavier making a deal with Orchis to allow them to do what they want to humans as long as they spare mutants? Who is this character? It's a pity. The Krakoan era was a big exciting addition to the X-Men mythos and the story had been built up since 2019, only for Duggan to ruin the payoff at the end. It would have been much better if this title was given to Gillen as well, since his side of the fall of Krakoa is really good.

Not a fan of this run at all. Zdarsky's retcons/expansions of the Jokers past is making the character less compelling instead of more. It's entertaining enough, but Zdarsky's making some bad changes to the characters (which he also did in Gotham War by making the Bat Family act extremely out of character).

Batman (2016) #146

It's really annoying how many writers are just trying to retcon classic stories and characters these days. While the writers often try to expand on these classic stories or give them more depth, the opposite often occurs and they end up tarnishing them. That's the case here. Zur-En-Arrh was a cool concept when Morrison introduced it, but now it's just a corrupt Batman. The Jokers motivations have been retconned to all be about bringing out Zur-En-Arrh. Killing Joke? Death in the Family? All because of Zur-En-Arrh now instead of the Jokers affinity for chaos and obsession with Batman. Zdarsky is taking from the Batman mythos instead of adding to it. I don't know why DC is allowing these horrible changes to their most popular franchise. Avoid this Batman run. Everyone is out of character and it's just butchering classic stories.

X-Men (2021) #31

Despite featuring the end of Synch and Talon's romance, as well as the X-Men battling Nimrod, this issue still fell flat. The writing and art were just not up to par. I've found Gerry Duggan's X-Men run very inconsistent, and unfortunately this was one of his weaker issues.

To me this felt very rushed and by-the-numbers. It feels like Duggan is just phoning it in now with how he's closing off his plot points. Also, the X-Men now seem very bloodthirsty. I know they decided that extreme measures were necessary (which I think is out of character), but they just went from "No Killing" to "Kill everything you see even if you don't have to". They don't even show any remorse or difficulty in doing so. I feel bad for Kieron Gillen. His side of the Fall of X seems to be well written and well thought out. Unfortunately, it has to be paired with this.

Deadpool (2024) #1

Apr 3, 2024

Deadpool is like Harley Quinn. It's very hard to get his character right without him being too annoying or cringy. He's also a tragic character, but the tragic side of his story is also hard to write in a way that balances the humor and craziness. I don't think this comic managed to do that, although it is better than Alyssa Wong's run before it. Maybe I'm being too harsh since it is the first issue. Hopefully it gets better. One more thing to address. It is very annoying that this is rebooted again with another #1 when it uses the same story elements from the previous run. I know first issues are a sales bump, but I can't help feel that its a short term gain but a long term loss. 1) It's confusing for new readers 2) It's a jumping off point if the reader doesn't like the direction of the title 3) For those who want an unbroken run, there is no consequences for not buying back issues of a run that isn't that good, since it doesn't affect the numbering.

Ghost Rider: Final Vengeance (2024) #2

Apr 18, 2024

The story is fine but it's hard to care about the Hood. Replacing Johnny Blaze with the Hood just seems like a surefire way to lose money to me... Also, since when can Mephisto just remove Ghost Rider from Johnny Blaze? Since when could the spirit just up and leave, going from host to host? Did the Ghost Rider lore just completely change off-panel?

Immortal Thor (2023) #9

Apr 5, 2024

Before this issue, I had been a bit disappointed in this series. I thought it was average at best. However, I thought this issue was really good! I loved the concept that the Gods are susceptible to the stories told about them, and I think it's a cool idea for someone to attack Thor by simply changing the stories about him. I also enjoyed the metacommentary about how Thor is no longer just a character these days. It's a franchise, a business. Toys, content. Everything about him is there for a big company to profit off of. You can really see this with Disney, as the Marvel stories are no longer just about quality storytelling, it's a business plain and simple. Endless reboots, constant big events, milking any successful title until it's completely lost it's appeal (e.g. Krakoan X-Men). Fans dislike these things and it dilutes the quality of the stories, but they're business decisions that make money (short term at least). Anyways, I've gone off on a tangent here. With this issue, the stakes were raised and I'm now really invested in the story. I'm looking forward to the next issue and also the Roxxon Thor one-shot.

I thought this comic would go downhill without Mark Waid, but thankfully it's still pretty good! The Shazam family moves back into their house after Zeus repairs it for them. However, Zeus has added some surprises to their home which Shazam is not too impressed with. A fun comic that keeps the tone of Waid's issues before it.

The Spectacular Spider-Men (2024) #1

Mar 6, 2024

Great start. I was apprehensive about this title since the writing and status quo in Amazing Spider-Man is so bad. Luckily Weisman actually seems to get the character of Spider-Man. The friendship between Peter and Miles is also done well. We even get to see forgotten supporting characters like Sha Shan and Kenny Kong! If you're looking for a main universe Spider-Man title to follow, then this is it.

A decent issue and vastly superior to the current run of Amazing Spider-Man. I'm enjoying the relationship between Peter and Miles and their friends at the Coffee shop. There is also a pretty intriguing mystery going on where people are getting their hearts desires. The mystery seems to have something to do with the Jackal and clones, and I'm also seeing some clues towards maybe Arcade being involved. I'm really not a fan of Humberto Ramos though.

Ultimate X-Men (2024) #1

Mar 6, 2024

This was very good, but it didn't feel like it had anything to do with the X-Men. I understand that Momoko wanted to do something different, but this is completely unrecognizable. Hopefully she introduces mutants that we know and care about, and hopefully she still keeps the core ideas around the X-Men. This is just the first issue, and it was a fantastic read. I'm eager to see where this goes while remaining hopeful that we move closer to the X-Men concept.

This concludes the retelling of Poison Ivy's origin and includes her first encounter with Batman. This is an expansion on a characters origin that is actually done very well, without serious retcons or mischaracterization (Take not Zdarsky). The art is great as well. This comic remains one of DC's strongest titles. In my opinion, this was the best DC comic this week by far. Definitely check this out if you're a Poison Ivy fan.

Batman: Off-World (2023) #4

Apr 18, 2024

This is the best series that Jason Aaron has written since his Thor run. I was skeptical of the premise of Batman in space, but it works really well and actually makes sense. Why wouldn't Batman want to be prepared for alien attacks? The supporting cast of Ione and Punchbot are also great new additions to the DC universe, and the art is fantastic.

Spider-Man: Shadow of the Green Goblin (2024) #1

Apr 3, 2024

A great start to a story about the early days of Spider-Man and Harry Osborn. I know Marvel only likes hiring younger writers these days for their main titles, but writers like JM DeMatteis are such better storytellers. These Spider-Man miniseries that JM DeMatteis has been writing these last few years have been the best 616 Spider-Man comics that we've had in a long time.

Wonder Woman (2023) #8

Apr 18, 2024

I'm really enjoying this Wonder Woman run by Tom King. I think he's doing a fantastic job and the art is amazing. This issue has Diana captured by the Sovereign, who has her ensnared in his Lasso of Lies where he uses quotes from the Bible to keep her submissive to him. She's manipulated into thinking she is a housewife subservient to her husband. I get that, in this political climate, this issue has been controversial. With themes of the Bible being used as a weapon to manipulate people and with the evils of men dominating women, people are upset about "wokeness" and the like. However, it pays to keep in mind that this is literally the villain. He's the underground king of America, and a villain using religion to manipulate people is a valid villainous tactic. It's not anti-Christian or anti-men or whatever, it's just the method the villain uses. No one is acting out of character, the story isn't being sacrificed to promote an agenda. It's good stuff! Oh, and the Wonder Girls are awesome too :)

Roxxon Presents: Thor (2024) #1

Apr 17, 2024

Absolutely brilliant! This continues from the recent Thor issues where Roxxon is using a Thor comic to change the narrative of Thor. Since gods are dependent on the stories about them, Thor is being effected by the shifting perspective of his character. This Thor comic is presented by Roxxon. It shows a hilarious corporate sponsored Thor who advertises Roxxon products while saving the country from tree-hugging hippies who won't stop slacking off and refuse to get a job. The issue is pretty funny, but takes a sinister turn when you learn that Dario Agger is purposefully parodying Roxxon in order to endear himself to the reader and you learn how Roxxon manipulates the consumers of their products.

Ultimate Spider-Man (2024) #2

Feb 21, 2024

This was great. This is exactly the type of Spider-Man book that the fans have wanted for over a decade. I love Peters family dynamics, and the art is fantastic! The build up of Kingpin and the Green Goblin is also good and keeps me wanting more. Even the Shocker was given his own unique personality and had a fun introduction. Ben and Jonah's relationship continues to be a surprising highlight as well. The only thing that concerns me is the lack of spider-sense, but hopefully Pete develops that soon.
