As far as first issues go, Amazing X-Men #1 has more than its fair share of solid hooks - stellar artwork, an engaging story, and the return of a fan-favorite character. Considering the revolving door of death in the Marvel Universe, it's refreshing to see Jason Aaron actually have a logical plan for Nightcrawler's return, one that might bring the X-Men to a new frontier - not across nations or across planets, but now through metaphysical realms themselves. A brilliant start to this new series with Aaron showing some of his best X-Men work for a long time. The issue would do an amazing job of re-introducing Nightcrawler, with some very fun and exciting moments throughout, all of which were made even more fun and exciting due to McGuinness' fabulous artwork. None-the-less, the impact of this story triggers all the right emotions. It's entertaining and humorous, the voice of every character sounding distinct and appropriate. And while the action may not be on the same scale as the final issue of X-men Battle of the Atom, it still feels epic in a way not unlike a Rocky Balboa fight. Amazing X-men #1 was primarily billed as the issue that brought Nightcrawler back to the X-men. It did that and so much more. It re-established all the dynamics that make the X-men at Jean Grey Institute such a fun story to follow and did it in an entertaining, concise way. Great first issue. I liked the idea of Firestar being one of our point of view characters and Aaron really nails Nightcrlawer and sets up the Azael character as the natural enemy since Kurt's in Heaven. The art is great, though we all know it'll probably only be for an arc. I am also happy to see Northstar, since I hope that after the 1st arc, we get Nightcrawler led super-hero team with Firestar and Northstar as the main body of the team. Easily another hit in the making for Marvel Comics, Jason Aaron and Ed McGuinness' Amazing X-Men looks to be a fun ride for X-Fans everywhere. Personally, I'm even more glad to see Aaron writing yet another Marvel Comics' book. In my opinion he's the Scott Snyder of the Marvel Bullpen. The thing about Aaron’s writing is that for the most part it’s fun and quirky, fitting for the more campy and loving side of the X-Men, and while there’s going to be action and minor drama, don’t expect it to get too dark. This is a great entry point for people who might not have been reading any x-titles due to the fallout of Avengers vs X-Men, or their dislike of Bendis essentially having a monopoly on the core books. Amazing X-Men #1 isn't a fundamentally different book from Wolverine and the X-Men. This story could just as easily be an arc of that book. But there's a sense of fun and whimsy at work that the X-books don't always tap into. Between that and the terrific artwork, Amazing X-Men #1 is definitely worth a purchase. Read Full Review

My only problem with the issue is the strange sexual tensions between characters. Wolverine and Storm, Iceman and Warbird, Iceman and Firestar. To conclude, this is still a stellar opening despite it's one persistent problem. It does bring down the ending of the issue that the cliffhanger doesn't exactly grip you for the next issue, but the sheer talent put on display more than makes up for it. Aaron and McGuinness are two creators with such love for the character of Nightcrawler that it can't help but seep through the page and make even the most cold-hearted bastard excited for the elf's return. There's a new X-Men title in town and we have the makings of a grand and amazing adventure in this first arc. Jason Aaron is joined by Ed McGuinness and Marte Gracia to start off the return of Nightcrawler. We have to wonder if we truly need another X-title but this issue does make a pretty good argument. There are many X-characters hanging around and there is a great opportunity to showcase a different set of X-Men. The addition of a certain red-headed mutant does offer an interesting beginning to the series. Between Jason Aaron, Ed McGuinness and Nightcrawler, there's plenty of reasons to check this out. Of course, this is the X-Men so no one really ever stays dead so Aaron and McGuinness get the dirty work of Amazing X-Men #1 out of the way immediately and give us back Nightcrawler in the opening pages. Any moroseness or pity the character might have had about being dead is immediately discarded as pirates invade Heaven and he gets to be a swashbuckling hero once again. Aaron and McGuinness show us that even the rougher parts of the X-Men's history can be twisted around until the absurdity of it becomes what the stories are about and you've just got to sit back and enjoy the ride. Good start though you do hope things start to pick up a bit from here. I do feel that a bit too much time was wasted showing us how the school is normally and we do kind of have an idea of how the school runs by now. After years of X-Men books being very dark and serious, it is good to see some light hearted humour and fun returning to the X-books. Aaron seems to have a good grasp of the relationships between the characters that are at Logan's school and he returns Nightcrawler to the fun loving X-Man from years ago which is a good thing as being a broody angst ridden character did not suit Kurt. McGuinness is a fantastic artist who has created a great fight scene in Heaven. It was always inevitable that Marvel would bring back Nightcrawler but I was not expecting them to launch another X-Men ongoing title to do it. Having enjoyed "Wolverine and the X-Men" the past few years under Aaron's stewardship, I'm not worried about the slightly slow start to "Amazing X-Men" #1. It's still a very pleasant read, but I do wish that it had come out of the gate a little faster and a little stronger. Aaron seems to be banking on the return of Nightcrawler and the art from McGuinness and Vines to be enough of a draw to stick around for "Amazing X-Men" #2, and on some level I can't help but think that he's right. That is all it will take for most readers to come back. I'll be one of them, but hopefully Aaron's script for next month's installment will have just a bit more spring in its step, too. There are a lot of X-Men books on the market to pick from. This particular one seems to overlap a lot with Wolverine and the X-Men. As far as I can tell the key difference is this one contains Nightcrawler and Firestar and it has McGuiness on art. If you are enjoying Aaron's work on Wolverine and the X-Men then I am sure you will like this book as well. I would think if you like Nightcrawler or McGuinness then you will want to pick this book up. It's not clear what the plot is going to be to get Nightcrawler back from the dead as this issue simply introduces the characters, but I like the start for the story. This is worth checking out. I've been a big fan of Wolverine and the X-Men, and Amazing X-Men is a good example of what Aaron can do when he focuses on the characters and setting rather than let silly plots like a horror circus get in the way. It will be interesting to see how Amazing X-Men will fit into the larger scheme of X-books, especially with regard to Jason Aaron's other title, Wolverine and the X-Men. My optimistic prediction is that Amazing will serve as a book to chronicle the various adventures of the Jean Grey School faculty while WATM focuses on the happenings at the actual school with an increased emphasis on the students. While many may ask the question "Do we really need another X-Men book" and be justified in doing so, Amazing X-Men #1 is a solid debut for a new title. This book will certainly be a hit with the many fans of Nightcrawler, one of the most popular X-Men characters. Ed McGuiness's art is strong throughout and the book has a lot of the witty dialogue and situational humor Jason Aaron has become famous for. Overall, I give this book a 7 out of 10 and will continue to read to see just exactly how Nightcrawler will prove the age-old truth that nobody ever stays dead in comics. Read Full Review

Though this isn't one of Jason Aaron's best issues, the man has always had a talent for Wolverine that seems to extend to his fuzzy, blue hetero life partner. I really enjoyed the opening sequences of Nightcrawler and the apparent choice of writer Jason Aaron and artist Ed McGuinness to bring him back into the Marvel Universe. Although the chaos on Firestar's first day is humorous, there's a bit much of it for my tastes as the joke runs a little too long. That said, Firestar's inclusion in the title as a part of this core team certainly brought a smile to my face (as did her awkward interaction with Iceman). I haven't yet been sold on any of the X-Men books on Wolverine's side of the X-Men split, but this one I may stick with. Worth a look. Read Full Review

Even Ed McGuinness, who is usually so dependable for quality art, falls short of the mark. I don’t think it’s McGuinness’ fault – I think he was trying to draw in the same vein Aaron was writing. Everyone involved has overly exaggerated reactions, especially Hank McCoy, who spends most of the issue looking like He-Man’s battle cat standing on two legs. The art here is so over-the-top, it’s borderline obnoxious, which matches perfectly with Aaron’s writing. Read Full Review

I think I will enjoy this series after I forget the lazy way they brought Nightcrawler back from the dead. Great art and good story (lame resurrection aside).

Not exactly "Amazing" but not bad either. The idea of there being a "Heaven" in the Marvel universe seems a little strange to me. I don't blame Aaron for being short on details when it comes to the biblical paradise, but I wish he had just avoided the concept altogether. It just seemed a little unconvincing that Nightcrawler had been hanging out on the edge of heaven for the past 1000 years, feeling like he needed to go back. McGuinness' art was good, though I did notice that his Iceman is off model. I think the spike-head look is better, especially since there is a "classic" looking Iceman also currently in the Marvel U over in All-New. I'm sticking around for the entirety of this initial first arc, and we'll see if I can be convinced to continue after that. I'll be curious to see how, or if this is any different than Aaron's Wolverine and the X-Men. more
