    AIPT - David Brooke Aug 6, 2025

Captain America #2 deepens the moral and emotional stakes set up in its bold debut, trading bombast for introspection as it contrasts old and new ideologies of war through the eyes of Steve Rogers and Captain Colton. With smart writing and expressive art, it's a thoughtful and timely take on heroism in the modern age, even if it's light on the usual fireworks. Read Full Review

Fans looking for patriotic nostalgia may balk at the tonal shiftbut thats the point. This issue hammers home that the ideals Rogers represents come with gritty complexity. Its a powerful step up from issue oneif Caps mythic destiny began the story, here hes forging his mission. Captain America #2 delivers an origin story with biteintelligent, emotionally jagged, visually compelling. It deepens both Steves legacy and Coltons road aheadand makes the first clash with Doom feel both fated and unpredictable. Read Full Review

The Comic Book Spot - Greg Thomson Aug 11, 2025

I loved the way that Zdarsky has managed to pull some critical thinking into the story for its readers as well as the direction in which the arc is taking. Using the likes of Doom for the villain as I said earlier does make it a perfect choice in my eyes. The art is phenomenal from the very first page. The whole creative team should be extremely proud of Captain America #2. It's wonderful. Read Full Review

    Graphic Policy - Brett Aug 6, 2025

Captain America #2 is a solid second issue that really focuses on the two Captain Americas and their different outlooks based on different experiences in war and what drove them to enlist. The first issue showed a lot of potential and the second builds on that beginning to explore complicated issues with unclear answers. Read Full Review

Comic Watch - Theron Couch Aug 6, 2025

Captain America #2 lays a foundation for real world commentary that is certain to be a critical part of the series. The characters are richly developed both in text and art. Coltons flashback sequences seek to invoke the complicated feelings that most people have about the Afghanistan and Iraq wars. Zdarsky has made Captain America truly relevant again. Read Full Review

    Plot
Steve Rogers is sent on a mission with the current Captain America, David Colton. This assault team infiltrates Latveria, and Steve separates from Colton. Steve wants to help the insurgents stop Doctor Doom, while Colton only wants to fulfill his mission: rescue the kidnapped diplomats.

Colton feels that Rogers is out of place, out of his time, and that his hope for a better world is naive. The comic shows how Colton, as Captain America in Iraq and Afghanistan, lost trust and respect for his country; his patriotism is fading from so much disappointment and deceit.

Steve Rogers is discovered by Doctor Doom himself and welcomes him, considering him a hero for having fought Hitler.

Love this. Don't understand the hate. Captain America, a man caught between two eras - Chip understands this beautifully.

His Cap is already better than his Batman, thank goodness.

I'm enjoying this series. I'm doing my best to ignore the new timeline, but it's a well told story. I like the dynamic between the caps.

I'm still having trouble imagining this fitting into Marvel continuity. It probably would have worked better as an alternate reality story. Anyhow, I'm enjoying the character differences of the two Captains (actually, I'm more intrigued by the new Captain, David Colton) and it feels like Zdarsky has something to say about the nature of war. This is definitely not your grandpa's Captain America.

Marvel's sliding time scale doesn't mean you overload things with more recognizable real world events. Cap doesn't need to be fighting against the Taliban when there's plenty of Hydra, Secret Empire whatever groups out there that can fill the gaps without making this story outdated in a few years.

And that idiotic new costume doesn't help. He's Captain America, not Captain Wardrobe.

And now there's a new guy who plays at being Cap (and probably more over the years). Seems so unneccessary.

The art is just okay. It looks like the Doombot is huge - which makes no sense because Vic's ego would never make a robot bigger and more imposing than himself.

Why can't anyone write a good Cap story? He has got to be the easiest character in the world to write, and everyone just over-complicates him. I'm so tired of everyone having the super-soldier serum, when the professor died in 1945 to prevent anyone from having it. I really dislike the change in costume as well. I don't think I'll be collecting this book beyond issue 5. Another failure for Chip Z.
