A BRAND-NEW EPIC BATMAN STORY ARC STARTS HERE! Batman is back with a vengeance and Bruce Wayne's new public initiatives have Gotham on the verge of finally becoming a great city! Does that bright future include the Riddler, who's seemingly gone legit? Or the new, unnerving hero, Commander Star? And can Gotham survive the shocking murder of one of its greatest citizens? The Dying City starts here with a case that only Batman can solve, but the answers may unravel his world and all of Gotham!
Typically, the first issues to an arc seem to be the best-case scenarios of the Zdarsky run on Batman and the set-up in #153 is an example of this so far. There's a buzzing sense of excitement in the way the writer establishes the post-Zursafe Gotham, filled with lurking owls, rogue enigmas, and corporate intrigue. Zdarsky knots these ideas together into an interesting mystery that benefits from his time on Newburn. That energy carries into Jimnezs work, which explores fascinating juxtapositions in blocking and compositions to heighten the sense of dread. Wrapped in Moreys moody, atmospheric tones, the issue is a promising start to the new arc and the All In initiative alike. Read Full Review

Batman #153 acts both as a new starting point and continuation of the narrative Chip Zdarsky and Jorge Jimenez have been working on during their creative run. There is a feeling that Gotham City has entered an entire new era with the decisions made by Bruce Wayne and Edward Nygma. Read Full Review
Batman #153 is a great jumping-on point as it reveals a new Gotham, a new major villain with a new angle, and two new major mysteries. Aside from the issue being light on action, it's well crafted and deepens the melodrama Bruce faces politically and personally. Read Full Review

Batman #153 is a nice issue that sets up the next era of Bat-stories. With lots of moving parts to wrangle, Zdarsky does an effective job of keeping a tight leash on events. Nice adversaries, old ones up to no good and a new corporate landscape to navigate. It is fair to say Batman will have his hands full for some time to come. Read Full Review
Batman #153 begins a new arc that depicts Gotham City heading toward a brighter day while dark forces plot to tear it all down. Zdarsky's setup checks all the right boxes on the surface, but there's an obvious shift in Bruce Wayne's personality that feels off somehow. This issue is better than the majority of Zdarsky's run, so we'll see if he can pay off the setup. Read Full Review
Batman #153 is the jolt this book needs to get readers excited! It's full of new mysteries, a surprise murder, a surprise brother, a tech magnate Riddler, a new vigilante & much more. Somehow, it all pretty much works! Read Full Review
Batman #153 kicks off a new chapter of Chip Zdarsky's run by focusing less on the secrets of Batman's past and more on social commentary of the present. From wealthy philanthropy to violent nationalism to cryptocurrency, it seems to want to tackle as many hot topics as possible. Unfortunately, that commentary feels haphazard in its attempts to tie broader political issues into the narrative at hand. If this approach is going to work moving forward, it'll need to more deftly handle such complex subject matter. Read Full Review
It's a lot of dialogue, but basically a lot of things are building up slowly on how we see Gotham City slowly get better
No, just no. Chip actually did a decent Bat story last issue, but ruins it by bringing up Bruce’s long lost “brother” from Snyder’s court of Owls thing. It was a bad idea a decade ago. It was a bad idea in 1973 when Bob Haney wrote Bat-crap crazy stories in Brave and Bold. The stories had no impact on main continuity and ought to be considered alternate universe.
Points for finally killing the mayor. Points taken away for the Riddler being free on a technicality. He has committed so many crime he would have to be free on 123,865 technicalities.
And Bruce finally gets his money back only to be sued by “bro.” Thomas Wayne and wife Martha having a kid is front page news. The pregnancy is front page news. Ther more
