Nerds On The Rocks - Frank Fuentes Oct 25, 2013

Johns, I. Reis, Prado and R. Reis delivered a beautiful, thrilling adventure that seamlessly bridges multiple plots and series. The amount of consistency between all the initial groundwork layed and what has appeared in the final story is astounding. Everything from Pandora's appearances in New 52 launch issues to Shazam's story have all played into this story. If there is one event comic book readers should be reading this summer, it's Trinity War. Next week, the story continues in Justice League of America. After the death of Doctor Light, it's all out war and readers must not miss what happens next. Read Full Review

Comic Booked - Jeff Hill Jul 11, 2013

This was the first DC comic I have read in over a decade that actually did something that surprised me. It was just a bonus that it was beautifully written and drawn. Go pick this issue up right now, before it sells out. And do what the creators are inadvertently asking you to do: Get excited. Get angry. But above all else, care. Read Full Review

This was a amazing issue, and the best that this series has seen since Throne of Atlantis. It was very exciting, with suspense, and drama evened out through the issue, with some mystery added in. It also had some amazing action, and some questionable events, making me want to read the next part of this story even more than I would have before this issue. Due to all this I'd highly recommend this issue as it's amazing, and exciting. It also appears to be a vital story for the future of the DCnU so I'd even recommend it to non JL, JLA, or JLD fans. I had high expectations for this book because I'm such a fan of JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK, THE PHANTOM STRANGER, and PANDORA. That section of the DC Universe is by far my favorite part. Luckily, this book did not disappoint me. It's a blast. Johns, along the other creative types that worked on Trinity War, has a great start to what seems to be a worthwhile cross-over. JUSTICE LEAGUE #22 is the start to something great. Sure, something big and controversial happens here, but that's not what the book, as a whole is about. Take it for what it is, the centerpiece of the story. Read Full Review

    AIPT - Jordan Richards Jul 11, 2013

This was an absolutely great way to start off Trinity War with how everything came together. The action, the characters, buildup and pacing, the mysteries, and the cliffhanger were great. Besides maybe a nitpick or two, this is one event comic that people should be checking out. Read Full Review

    PopMatters - Jack Fisher Jul 21, 2013

There are lots of appealing aspects about “Trinity War” and Justice League #22 demonstrates nearly all of them in a neatly contained package. The challenge now is to not overwhelm the readers with too many details and tie-ins, which DC has a nasty habit of doing. For now, at least, Trinity War is off to a promising start. Everything that has been unfolding in the DC universe is starting to come together and like the A-Team, there's a lot to love about a plan that comes together. Read Full Review

Analog Addiction - Tony Couto Jul 11, 2013

Justice League #22 takes previously superficial plot points, like the JLA hunting for the JL, and masterfully makes the Trinity War conflict feel legitimate. Johns does so by weaving together various other threads and showcasing characters that show varying degrees of moral judgement, made powerful with Reis' visuals. Read Full Review

This is a great start to a mystery that should only get better as we journey down the rabbit hole. The reader is left in the dark in many areas, but thats part of the fun. Like Identity Crisis, its a blast trying to figure out what the heck is happening. Johns has taken charge and given us a reason to care about DC again. Read Full Review

    Batman-News - Andrew Asberry Jul 10, 2013

You'll have to read Justice League #22 more than once to full appreciate the enormity of what all is going on and that's a good thing. Geoff Johns not only throws a lot of plot into these pages and answers some important questions left over from the JLA series but he also brings a tremendous amount of action to the table (as well as a full deck of tarot cards). However, the plot points can all be a bit overwhelming, as can the incredibly large cast of characters and the action can come off as fan-service. But in the end I think it's a pretty ambitious comic that will give fans plenty to discuss, argue, and get excited about. I recommend it. Read Full Review

This is how a crossover should be done. Taking all the elements of previous story-lines and bringing them together with great payoff. It will be interesting to see if the pacing of this crossover will slow down a bit, or if the story beats continue at this brisk pace. I'm more excited for this crossover than I originally thought I'd be, and that's saying a lot with the creative team involved. This is a showcase to the rich DC Universe and I can't wait to see what's next! Read Full Review

Geoff Johns and Ivan Reis combine to form a great creative team for Justice League. So while this is a fun big time crossover, it was plagued by a few too many weak points that could have been avoided. Johns may be stretched too thin on his various other projects and his executive status at DC. This storyline has been hyped for months. It's good, but it should have been the best comic of the New 52 so far and sadly it wasn't. It's worth a read, though and like I said, the art is brilliant! Read Full Review

Comic Book Resources - Doug Zawisza Jul 11, 2013

While the scope of "Justice League" #22 is certainly summertime blockbuster, the emotional resonance from this story is more along the lines of "Crisis on Infinite Earths." The story spirals outward to ensnare more characters, but to what end? Certainly not everyone is going to come through this unscathed and I highly doubt there will be a group photo taken at the end to break up the festivities of a family reunion-like party. Like a summer blockbuster, the characters here are in danger of being absorbed by the plot, but at least that plot is big and loud and full of action. "Trinity War" expects readers to check disbelief at the door and just absorb the spectacle. Read Full Review

Reis delivered his usual, realistic yet larger-than-life art aided by the work of inkers Joe Prado and Oclair Albert, and colorist Rod Reis. It's understandable why this issue needed so many artistic minds: it's panel-for-panel action, with superbodies spread across each page and supported by an ominous script and the card-turning Madame Xanadu. As far as comic book popcorn blockbusters go, The Trinity War definitely will hit all the fan buttons, as hero battles hero a fight for the ages. While occasionally this issue trips over its own dialogue, the execution of the high concept still has enough of a visceral thrill that you can't fault it. There are so many moving parts to this series that it's hard to judge it all at the outset. It's not as dramatically personal as Identity Crisis, but it's off to a better start than Avengers vs. X-Men. It's more accessible than Final Crisis, even though it's missing a clear source of conflict like Civil War. This might not be a line-wide event like those stories were, but it's definitely got the scope and talent of one. Read Full Review

There's also the concern that DC is trying to jump through hoops Marvel's already been through, what with having a civil war between superheroes leading to a long reign of bad guys, but the jury's still out on that particular indictment. It's a comic tradition to take familiar concepts in new directions, so we'll let Johns and Co. finish their story before passing judgment on whether this direction is new enough to matter. This was a strong start to Trinity War, but I just don't think the characters or the teams are established enough to throw us into this conflict. Oh, and I guess Superman killing Doctor Light is supposed to be controversial, right? I don't see why. It's established this very issue that the Secret Society is controlling him somehow. So he didn't kill Doctor Light of his own free will. I'm more bothered by the fact that DC already killed Doctor Light! He was just introduced in the last issue of JLA, and already he's in a costume and dead? Why go to the trouble of rehabilitating the character into a hero like that if you're just going to kill him before we even got to know him? Read Full Review

While Justice League #22 does a fine job setting up Trinity War, there are a few big missteps that pull the issue down. The issue is bogged down by needless and overly stylized/expositional narration, unconvincing dialogue about the use of violence in doing super-heroics, and just set-up for future issues. That latter part gives me some small hope that this will pick up, and hopefully in next weeks Justice League of America which is a title I enjoy in a rather base way. If not the only consolation that there is remains that this story will only last for two months, and hopefully lead into a vaguely more interesting Forever Evil. Read Full Review
