• The events of ASM #80.BEY have set Doctor Octopus on a collision course with the Beyond Corporation and their Spider-Hero in residence.
• Ben Reilly isn't the only one with new tricks up his sleeve, or, in Ock's case, MANY sleeves.
RATED T+
I'm so sick and tired of telling you just how great this book is. BUY it!! READ it! Then read it again, because every issue in the Beyond Era is worth multiple reads. Read Full Review
The Beyond Corp era of Spider-Man continues to be a delightful juggling of Ben Reilly's personal life, supervillain intrigue, and the continued reveal of what Beyond Corp is really up to. If you've been itching for more Doc Ock, The Amazing Spider-Man #84 delivers him as the main course and he's written and drawn expertly well. Read Full Review
Otto Octavius makes a splashy return in one of the best issues of the Beyond era to date. The writing is sharp and the art nails Doc Ock, though Spidey is a bit stiff. All-in-all though, it's a winner! Read Full Review
Amazing Spider-Man #84 delivers a solid comic book as Ben Reilly comes face-to-face with Doctor Octopus. The writer nails down the pacing, dialogue, and characterization of both main characters, while the art team make the comic book look good and dynamic from start to finish. On top of that, this comic actually moves the Beyond storyline forward a bit, and hopefully we get more in the next issue. Read Full Review
Medina delivers some beautiful visuals throughout the issue. There are some stunning character shots and the action looks fantastic. Read Full Review
Really fun, really enjoyable issue of this Beyond Corporation storyline, mixing classic villain goodness with some plain fun Spider-Man action. Read Full Review
Amazing Spider-Man #84 was a solid chapter in the Beyond direction. Cody Ziglar and Paco Medina did a great job with how they wrote and drew, respectively, Doctor Otto Octavius. This portrayal made Doc Ock instantly one of the most interesting characters in the Beyond era. How Ben Reilly's Spider-Man and the Beyond Corporation respond to Doc Ock's actions in this issue will be very interesting to see play out. Read Full Review
If asked what happens in these pages, it's difficult to say more than, "Doc Ock returns." That may be enough to provide some style points, but it doesn't make a $3.99 comic seem any more satisfying upon reflection. Read Full Review
The Beyond arc has inherited some of the weaknesses of Nick Spencer's run, specifically the uneven big-picture pace and the tendency for the heroes to be too passive.
But ya know what? I'm OK with Pete and Ben being useless if the banner of heroic plot development is gonna be picked up by Doc Ock. Particularly a Doc Ock that's going back to his classic roots: classic look, classic brains, classic smugness.
I had a blast reading this. A formidable performance by one of my favorite artists certainly helps. But the script's humor was working for me, too.
I hope Doug the hapless intern can survive this arc and earn himself a small recurring role.
Well, well, what do we have here? A story going forward! And I think it makes perfect sense for Ock to be mad at Beyond, considering he created Parker Industries and they basically bought it for cheap. When will we see what's behind Beyond (no pun intended)?
P.S. Ben Reilly is a giant dumbass in this run, the hell happened to him?
On a surface level i enjoyed this issue(as with most of beyond so far). I really like the characterization of Doc Ock, in general I like stories when somebody underestimates him, takes him for some loser or tries to take some advantage of him, only to be shown how much of a badass he actually is. The dialogue, the art is all good and engaging. I also like the laid back nature of this run so far, I think that was needed, but still at times it feels like nothing of importance is happening, nothing is getting explored in a deeper way and the same stuff is happening over and over without much of difference. It's all getting so formulaic so fast. This issue is actually better than most of the others in this aspect but still to fully love this Imore
The main storyline is starting to move, and it's fun, very well written and drawn, but i'm just not so much invested in Ben as a character.
This is pretty good, I guess, but I'm really not feeling the excitement.
It's ok.an enjoyable read. Nothing too crazy. I do like Doc Ock though.
I'm so tired of Maxine. She just regurgitates the same dialogue every time she is in an issue. "We thought you'd be better, maybe we chose poorly. Our investments, blah, blah, blah." She's not even a character at this point and that's really disappointing. Ben felt a little off here but Ben is someone I feel is pretty nebulous in terms of his characterization. I'm willing to allow for a change in personality as it has been a long time since we saw him for an extended period of time. I really enjoy watching his relationship with Janine. I was just as frustrated their date was shuffled off as they were. Like Peter, I just want to see Ben happy and successful. Otto felt like Otto and I couldn't really ask for much more. I thought the art was smore
Yeah this is very average ASM. The Beyond era is officially a lull spot holder until we get to the next thing. Ziglar is OK. Paco Medina is good and Grundetjern colors were OK (his skin tones are weird though). Can't wait for this to be over already.
Just fair. Paco Medina didn’t disappoint but not much happened to move the Beyond plot along. We already knew they stole tech from Ock’s time as Superior Spidey and he’s pissed about that from the tie-in issue. What did Beyond take and why? Guess we’ll find out next issue cuz this issue they were too focused on Ben getting his ass kicked and then getting yelled at for it.
Another week of Beyond storyline, another week of fine issue.
Everything here is fine. I just wish the overall storyline was more interesting or that I would care about Ben at this point.
This was fine tbh. Art is a bit iffy but its not offensive. Just wish ben reily has better characterization
Pretty decent issue, nothing special.
Another week, another middle-of-the-road Amazing Spider-Man issue. Nothing terrible as such but certainly nothing “amazing” either. At least there’s some progress in this issue but it’s nowhere near as exciting to justify a weekly purchase. If this book doesn’t vastly improve in the next two or three issues, it’s a drop.
I notice that others do not take issue with the dialogue of this issue but I am personally finding Ziglar to be the worst writer of this Beyond project. Art was fine. I am enjoying the direction of this arc but the Ziglar issues are rough to get through.
Ben just does what Beyond says. He seems more like Employee rather than hero.
Otto's anger is justified. He built Parker Industries. Building a company is difficult task. It's huge risk. And getting to know thàt someone bought it for cheap, is just disheartening. Him going after Beyond is good progress. Atlast Progress in the Beyond Story or it seems so.
At last Average Issue.
super formulaic, can't wait for this storyline to be over
took them about 25 pages to say doc ock is back
