Absolutely loved the Cypher, Warlock, Magik and Krakoa interactions. The issue adds emotional weight to the event by showing the story from Doug's point of view. Rod Reis' art just keeps on getting better.
X OF SWORDS, PART 7
Diligence. Discipline. A sword of the self.
Rated T+
New Mutants #13 is almost like a pause button on X Of Swords. It focuses on the characters and how they're reacting to the overarching plot, making it an especially good crossover issue. Character gets left out of these kinds of things a lot, and Brisson does a superb job in this issue, making this issue about Cypher and his struggles. Rod Reis' art is excellent, especially the way he uses color. All in all, this is a great comic. Read Full Review
Ed Brisson ends his tenure as the writer of New Mutants by leaving it in better shape than when he started, in my opinion. He's crafted a story in this issue of the X of Swords event that could swing the tides in the favor of the mutants or it could be the lynchpin that causes it to crash and burn. I hope that Vita Ayala is up to the task of writing New Mutants because he's got some big shoes to fill!! Read Full Review
While Marco Failla has been my favorite artist to draw some of these New Mutants books, Rod Reis does a great job on these pages as he prepares to take over full time duties. Ed Brisson has had a wonderful run so it's tough to come to terms with this being his last issue, but hopefully Vita Ayala comes through to inject some black girl magic into the veins of the young heroes. New Mutants #13 aka the 7th X of Swords book does the ongoing series a favor instead of the frequent disservice that tie-ins often do to the comics they invade. Read Full Review
While other chapters in this event have focused on major players like Storm this issue does the necessary work to remind us of a lesser-known character like Cypher matters in many ways more than other characters in the event. New Mutants #13 does the work to establish Cypher's unique situation as well as the sword he'll carry to battle. He also offers a different perspective in this battle as he isn't a highly trained and seasoned warrior, but a good dude who doesn't want to let his people down. Read Full Review
New Mutants #13 (Brisson & Reis) is a calmer story in a, so far quest driven, event that provides beautiful art and touching character moments. Read Full Review
"X of Swords" continues to be stellar throughout. Read Full Review
I enjoy these slower moments quite a bit. While I don't think the art or the coloring was as vibrant as previous issues in the arc, the writing was quite phenomenal. This is an issue you can probably skip in the scheme of the event but I have found this to be the most enjoyable so far. Read Full Review
Overall this was an alright chapter to the event. Getting to have one focused on Cypher was great, even if it had some missed opportunities. Read Full Review
XOS Ch. 7: This is a great character-focused issue. Love the friendship between Doug, Warlock and Krakoa; its nice to see that further developed here. X Of Swords is back on track!
Another great issue for X of Swords with Brisson's final issue on this series. I think he did a nice job of building the tension in this story and conflict within Cypher. It's also awesome to have Reis back doing art. He absolutely killed it here, as per usual.
Great issue. Brisson saved his best issue for last and as an X of swords chapter it works very well. Rod Reis is a beast and his art is the best it's ever been and it made this story tremendously better.
Really good issue. So far, it feels like this crossover has helped some of the fledgling titles.
This is the best issue of this series in a while. I think Cypher is a really good character, and his situation is very compelling.
This is an interesting, introspective issue that's wholly occupied by one key problem: Doug Ramsey is about the last mutant you'd pick for a high-stakes interdimensional sword-fight. He knows it, so does everybody else on Krakoa, and it's discussed at length. Although Cypher doesn't grow or change here, the multiple takes on his situation build up a nuanced and sympathetic portrait. In addition to the surprising depth of characterization, this issue is boosted by some terrific painterly art and some well-done Sienkiewicz emulation on Warlock.
A good issue! I liked the focus on the characters and their relationships.
Is this issue bad? No. Did I like it? No. Interrupting everything that was going on in the various X-Series for a 22 parts big event is CRAZY. I'm basically forced to follow every single series now because every issue is fundamental. I loved New Mutants before, but this feels completely useless. Makes no sense.
