Pete is well written here and this feels like a Spider-Man story...but with the way this event was advertised, all for 5 minutes with Doom? It gets knocked down because of its (overall) cost.

This IMO was the best issue of ASM in a while. I hate that Marvel can't keep a consistent artist on this book, but Bagley's style perfectly matched the tone of the story, and I thought his panels flowed very well. There's a page with much more action than what we've been seeing in ASM over the last 2 years that I think most people will love. Also absolutely loved the writing of Peter in this issue. Spencer's Peter has been much more thoughtful and deeper during this run, and I think with Sins Rising, we're going to see some of this pay off. This is a great start to Sins Rising and I really, really hope this quality is kept up.

Reading this issue hurt me emotionally, because it perfectly captured how I feel about the world now. Stories like this is why long time Spider-Man fans keep coming back, because we always relate to Peter Parker. Coupled with Bagley's art, this is the first 10/10 I'll give ASM during Nick Spencer's run.

There are a lot of good moments in this, but it doesn't tie all the ideas together well. Much of the Sin Eater arcs has been foregone to let Norman back into the spotlight. I think Ryan Ottley's art here is great, which is why Ramos' and Bagley's parts make this book so weirdly inconsistent.

I think the writing is fine. Some of the art looks a lot like Humberto Ramos lol. But I am really not a fan of the Spidey editorial team continuing this trend of creating more books like this when they can put a more condensed version in the main flagship book itself.

WTF is this? How is this not just a continuation of Last Remains? Last Remains didn't actually end too? A generic DCEU movie has better pacing than this POS. Getting Nick Spencer to write but getting Bendis levels of pacing is like voting for Obama and getting Romneycare.

I really don't know where this is going...I thought Martin Li was interesting as a conflicted individual, but what is this change supposed to add to the character? The art was inconsistent and subpar in many places. And like many have also complained, Spidey is barely in this book.

This was a good issue, and to be able to have actual progression for a character that's almost 60 years old is itself quite a feat. However, Spencer needs to cross the finish line competently for this story or his run will be regarded as one of the most meaningless runs in SM history.

As someone who actually watches a bit of Twitch, this was definitely an interesting take. I certainly don't mind Pete more or less being coerced into this - pretty much every other person has become a live streamer over the course of the pandemic. In our current system of slow-decaying capitalism, influencer status can potentially lead to big money. But it sucks because you sell your soul to corporates, and this book demonstrates that decently well. Spencer's contemporary jokes in his Spider-Man writing are hit or miss - the ones in this issue were mostly okay...I'm hoping they don't get worse from here. Gleason's art was pretty good, I just wish he could draw the book for more than 2 consecutive issues.

The art in this issue is highly stylized and fits ASM very well...that said, I'd rather have a consistent artist than a rotation. Maybe Marvel shouldn't do books biweekly if they can't keep up... Peter's in 7 pages of this issue, about 1/3 of the comic...people can claim Nick Spencer isn't writing Spider-Man, point to this issue and be sorta correct.

Same sentiment as a lot of people here - two different artists creating a disjointed experience. I can do with just 1 issue of ASM a month. Marvel please stop milking your IP at the expense of your creators. You could be a little more mask-on with your capitalistic tendencies you know? The story was mostly fine but feels like a whole lot of nothing happened.

I've started reading more manga than comics (no, not because comics are too woke or whatever, that doesn't bother me). The stories there are infinitely more diverse and fresher. Comic book history baggage have led us to...this garbage. As much as I hated OMD, I would really rather them just move on than try to fix the past. No one cares. At least we'll be getting new creatives on this book soon...

Solid issue. It feels nostalgic but is also definitely carving its own mythos for Ben. Subtle / not-so-subtle throwing shade at capitalism is cool now. I love how the Beyond staff is basically the stand-in for the PMC (Professional Managerial Class) / petty bourgeoisie here, or maybe I'm reading a little tooooo much into this lol. Really excited to see where the rest of the series is oing!

...the second story was actually pretty funny. I did like it quite a bit but we're all here to trash the main story! The lengths Marvel will go to...to...keep PP from MJ? OK, whatever. But Peter behaving like a complete man baby and needing to punch other superheroes even *after* MJ is safe? This is just frustrating silliness from the editorial team. Apparently, having Peter act a little adult is also a big no. I believe there is still a lot of storytelling potential for Spider-Man, but Marvel insists that we the readers do not deserve better, and also they need to remind us that things cannot get better by giving us this crap. IDK why I still read this...

I enjoyed this quite a bit, despite it not being anything unique. This feels very much like one of those stories with a stone cold female protagonist that occasionally shows some compassion finding about herself and her identity. The art overall is nice and fits the tone of the book well, but there are some panels where it's hard to differentiate between Psylocke and Laura.

Overall, incredible first issue. Couple things did annoy me a bit though: Kurt's reaction to the decision (Selene's escalation is *even* more justification for not choosing her) and just a tad bit too much inner thoughts from Mr. Sinister, otherwise excellent still. It's a little weird that the X-Books have been doing a lot of election stuff as of late...hopefully this is the end of it for now, cause we're about to enter the same disappointing reality in American politics...

"I want a Spider-Man book that makes me feel like this", Nick Lowe describes the inspiration of the book on the last page of the issue. He was riding a subway when that happened... Not everything is a good idea, Nick. This book certainly wasn't. Real critique: the flow of panels just really doesn't work, add to that some pretty cringe dialog from the villains, and you get a book that reads very annoyingly. I honestly think the story could have worked pretty well in a normal comic book layout.

Undiscovered Country #1

Nov 6, 2019

Whether you want politics in your comic books or not, the timing and nature of this book demands that modern day American politics be tackled on in some capacity. On the surface, with its large roster of unique characters and dystopian setting, this book will feel like it is meant to be the next Walking Dead. But are Scott Snyder and Charles Soule, both very smart writers, setting this up to be something more? It is far too early to tell where this book will go, but I did wonder...is there a hidden political message in this book? Are the writers trying to tell us that the US is too busy with infighting to deal with the actual threat - climate change? Even if Undiscovered Country succeeds as a character-driven drama, just a teeny bit of this aspect inserted into the narrative would make me very happy. I don't think this first issue is as mind-blowing as some people are making it out to be, but it certainly has enough to keep me interested in #2.

This is a great start to X of Swords, but understandably difficult to get into if you've not been keeping up-to-date with most of the X-Books. Pepe Larraz's art in this book is superb - he definitely is a top comic book artist now with how beautiful his panels are, but his storytelling ability is also top tier. There are so many page turns that perfectly capture the dramatic moments in this book. And of course, top praise to Daddy Hickman and Tini Howard for being able to come up with such a bizarre story that ties multiple concepts together that works. Also NGL, lots of the story felt very East of West, which I'm a huge fan of. Can't wait to see how this gigantic crossover unholds!
