This issue reiterated points already made. The Omni verse needs a Batman. After defeating the enemy du jour, this earth’s Selina kicks one-handed Bruce through the portal and he meets all the other Bats in all the other earths. Even get shark repellant from Adam West Bats and later uses it against a laughing fish shark. Silly, but I give points for style.

In one of the trips, Bruce gets an artificial hand and eventually gets back to “our” Earth. Does he now have an artificial hand? Will we see it in other books? Don’t know but doubt it. So what does it matter? When Peter David gave Aquaman. Hook hand, that stuck until an entire reboot of the universe.

I guess I am disappointed. The theme of even without Batman monsters would exist was literally said out loud. No points for being subtle. Meantime, story opportunities were thrown away. We don’t see other characters react to no Bruce. We don’t see Bruce react to losing his family. No reaction to losing his hand. Is he afraid he won’t be as handy? Will he be more (h) armless (see what I did there). Supposedly earthshattering events didn’t matter to the characters, so why should it matter to me?

Did Batman just lose a hand? In a story where Batman is fighting a foe we don’t know, one whose motives are unknown other than to be evil so Bats has someone to fight, Ghostmaker cuts off Bats’ hand.

So what the hell, dude. My reaction wasn’t how will he handle a life-altering injury. It was “no way this will stick, so who cares.” But that is just me. Your mileage may vary. But this whole arc just strikes me as none of this matters. We certainly haven’t seen such great world-building that we understand such things as motive, character or theme. We also don’t get any insight into Bruce. What does he think about this world? Does he ponder what this Selina means. Does he think this is my life if I failed? Does he miss his family, and desperately want to get back to them. Nope, he just goes through rote hero stuff with no context or insight. Pure plot.

Also, who cares about Ghostduster. Why not have a villain with real history cut off his hand instead of Tynion’s rip-off of a BTAS character. Not a good story. Plus, on the day Sony dropped its latest Spider-verse animated trailer, our next issue caption shows Bat-verse next issue. Be original DC. This is not good.

On the plus side, as I was typing Zdarsky’s name my iPhone tried to auto-correct to Z’Dar, as in the late Robert, star of the Maniac Cop series. “CoRdElLlLlL…”

Using comics Elseworld stories to put homophobic words in the mouth of a major costumed hero helps no one. Yes, of course, people will blame Meghan Fitzmartin (and given her educational background even more controversial). But let's be clear DC Comics editors approve this and DC Comics publishes this. As reviewer William Martin writes: "This is a meanspirited comic." Yes it is, and one that will be used to spread hate.

So this is not JUST a Meghan Fitzmartin problem. This is once again DC Comics editors problem. This is an Anne Leung DePies problem (as Daniel Cherry III is not around to blame anymore let's be clear). And yes, this is a Jim Lee problem. And let's be clear, Anne and Jim didn't start with DC yesterday. There are not "newbies" without a sense of what the consequences of their actions are. They have had great power... and use it for this nonsense. What a shame.

Using Dark Crisis: Young Justice #2, to create panels with Batman uttering homophobic phrases is wrong in every sense. Anyone with any sense of social responsibility would understand that.

on the other hand, i guess we all owe Meghan (because of course her name is Meghan) our thanks for tripping over the cord to the comic industry's life support, and ripping it straight out of the wall. somebody had to do it, and clearly we hadn't the strength.

Please don't make me miss Bendis's run

Did this series crack the top 50 last month? Nope, so that makes what the 5th month in a row this series is falling flat? This series needs to be mothballed and the real Superman needs to have multiple series running again. 4 books, 1 issue a week.

Truth is, hardly anything matters in comics. Every now and then publishers reset continuities either because they became convoluted, messy and often self contradictory, or sales dropped alongside readers' interest. DC'a last big official reboot was Flashpoint, which sadly opened a new universe of grimness, boredom, poor writing, edginess and straight up butchery of beloved characters (Lobo, Harley, Wonder Woman and Mr. Freeze all send their regards!). Flashpoint itself, though, was pretty fun and I still like it all these years later. Sure, it may not be the best event of all time, and its collected edition consisting only of the main 5 issues, ignoring all the tie-ins may be a straight up insult, but I can't deny that its dark and hopeless universe and characters had potential. Seems DC's editorial had the same thought, because they brought back Thomas Wayne's Flashpoint Batman in Tom King's oh-so-awful Batman series and now he landed his own series. Good for him, I guess, but is the comic any good?

First two thing that striked me after opening it, was how much baggage its story carries, forcing you to read Flashpoint (preferably with at least Batman's tie-ins), King's Rebirth Batman series (including The Button event, which sucks no less), Doomsday Clock and Justice League Incarnate to actually understand everything. I get it, Geoff Johns likes to use references, easter eggs and throwbacks, but hot damn does it make it hard for you to get into this particular plot itself.
Plot that isn't even particularly compelling, if I have to be brutally honest. Granted, mystery is there, as well as some weird omniversal shenanigans (because multiverse is not enough for DC these days), but I can't say I'm hooked. Maybe next issue, the actual #1 will be better, but for now I... yeah, I'm not excited about this project.

Art-wise the comic is below mediocre. Eduardo Risso illustrated Flashpoint: Batman Knight of Vengeance miniseries back in the day, so on paper he was a good pick to do this one as well, but his panels lack details, dynamism and often look just empty. It could be passable if only it had some unique quality to it, artistic identity, but nope, it's pretty generic and uninspired. Best panels here look okay, worst like they were drawn by a 16 year old in their bedroom. Maybe it's a matter of taste, like with Tim Sale whose art I'm not very fond of personally. Or maybe it's a relatively low effort book made this way to avoid delays that plagued Doomsday Clock's run, and ultimately the end result didn't feel worth it to a solid portion of the fanbase? Don't look at me - I liked it a lot, actually, but can't deny that it was a pretty irrelevant event in the large scale of things. more
