One of the best aspects of this Tomasi run on Detective is he's not stretching out arcs to go on for six or seven issues to fluff up a trade. This one won't make you cry, but Detective Comics #1016 is a fine example of creating a classic Batman tale that still feels contemporary. Tomasi's been building this Batman since the beginning of his run and it's an enjoyable and satisfying read that provides some real emotional content as he pushes Nora and Victor's story forward. I did love this issue as much as I wanted Freeze to actually have a happy ending. I feel like there was nothing more that anyone could do with his character and thats why he hasnt seen much use in so many years. At the same time, I also feel like Nora herself is just taking on the personality of Mr. Freeze from The Batman tv show from 2005. Its not bad, but I suppose we dont have enough of a motivation from her to continue committing crimes aside from some small feeling of entitlement over not being able to live her life. But the art was fantastic and we finally have an ending for one of the most tragic sagas in Batman history, even if it wasnt what everyone was expecting. Read Full Review

It is clear that this arc is about to come to ahead. Honestly, this feels like one of those what-ifs that went all the way to the best possible outcome side of things. I hope Nora sticks and Victor goes. She's everything that he isn't as a villain. She needs none of his crazy methods because she expected to be dead. An entertaining story, confidently told by masters of their individual crafts. There's quite a bit in this issue that may not make me truly love a lot of the choices made in this arc, but they're contextualized in a believable manner. So while it may not be the story I would have told, I can still see why this is the story the creators chose to tell. I feel bad for Freeze because he desperately wants to help Nora. He even accepts that she doesn't want to be with him anymore, but he still wants to help her instead of just stopping her. And I like the idea that Nora is out there and even more of a threat than Victor is. Those things are cool and the art was good, but this whole arc could have been much much better. Prelude:
It's the finale to Cold Dark World, I've been enjoying this arc so let's see how Tomasi lands it.

The Good:
It's a flip on the classic tale and I like it.

Tomasi logically explains why Nora is acting this way and it works well.

Nora is interesting to watch knowing how she is acting.

The Bad:
Art is a bit off at points.

Doesn't fully feel like the arc is over even though it is.

Conclusion:
An interesting end to Cold Dark World that I like but it doesn't feel like it's the end of the arc weirdly enough.

Basic Batman.

A lot to like here, but I am not sure we need Mrs. Freeze. Though I sort of love that Luthor cheated poor Victor. I assume a lot of his gifts are going to work out that way.

"Rhapsody in Blue"

A nice ending to an uneven story arc.

The new Freeze villain may prove fun in the future and I really enjoyed the connection to Forever Evil (now that was a good comic book event), but you can see that Tomasi is struggling here, having to tiptoe around the ideas and stories other writers have put forth, mainly Snyder and King.

If he was just given the opportunity to write something without any constraints, that might have been something really amazing and worthwhile.

This just feels uninspired.

Ironically I’ve found this story arc very tepid.

Tomasi had a good start with Detective Comics but lately either everyone got lazy at DC or something is happening with the editors. I don't want to go into spoilers but the story is boring despite trying to be a nod to the edginess of the 90's. Tomasi has a problem writing women. They always feel stiff and (while I disagree with the overuse of the term) a bit misogynistic? Robotic?

i think Tomasi's getting burned out by the bi-weekly release schedule. plus i can tell from his new52 Batman & Robin run, that Alfred is one of his favorite characters to write. thanks to Tom King, that's taken away from him now. that has to have an effect on him. notice how we've had a LOT of Alfred in this arc? he's getting in his farewell while he can.
