Great review, I definitely agree. I'm going to feature your review on my podcast Lunchbreak reviews about this issue. Reach out if you want to be on the show!
DIANA MAKES THE ULTIMATE SACRIFICE! The Tetracide is "The Four Killer"...and Diana has done the unthinkable to escape its fatal grasp. The move may have saved her to fight another day, but the price Diana paid is more than she can stand to lose for the fight that's coming. She will need the help of her allies both old and new to recover what she has lost--and save Gateway City!
So much is brilliant within Absolute Wonder Woman Issue 4 that there isnt time to expand upon how incredibly hardcore the final battle is. Thompson may draw blood, but there is always a functioning heart within the series. Read Full Review
Ultimately, Absolute Wonder Woman has the room to stand as one of the best titles of the Absolute line as every issues continues to re-imagine but also honor the legacy of previous Wonder Woman creators. I can't want to see how this arc concludes. Read Full Review
So often a new reboot or revision of an old character hits the page in a way that feels so much like previous incarnations that it scarcely feels relevant. (This has pretty much been the case with most of DCs Absolute Universe so far actually...) Thompson, Sherman and Bellaire are doing a brilliant job of doing something new with Wonder Woman that feels like a love letter to Diana while still being something new, refreshing and captivating on a whole bunch of different levels. This issue showcases everything that's great about this series so far: the personal, human side of the story, and the larger-than-life, monster-fighting action. Read Full Review
Every issue of this series just impresses more and more with its beasts, but at the end of the issue we're introduced to a new villain who operates on a very different field of power and who may be the iconic version of this character we've waited years for. Brilliant again, can't wait. Read Full Review
Absolute Wonder Woman #4 continues to be a hit. Diana is a soft-spoken warrior who is full of love and full of heart. I love the continued backstory we are given and this world that is created for the reader. It truly feels the team have only scratched the surface of this story and I cannot wait for more. This was a strong issue, with Wonder Woman making a few new friends. But could the ominous ending be hinting at potential enemies within the US government? Read Full Review
Absolute Wonder Woman #4 does such a wonderful job finding creativity in the unknown. Read Full Review
This series really feels like it's hitting its stride in this issue as we see Diana able to shine both in interpersonal interactions and as a giant monster-fighting warrior. Also, the inclusion of magic being a major component of how Diana approaches problems has finally established this version of the character from her main universe counterpart. Read Full Review
Absolute Wonder Woman #4 has boss fight energy, but Hayden Sherman's art is glorious and the banter between Diana, Steve Trevor, and the Candys are charming. Read Full Review
Absolute Wonder Woman #4brings the fight against the Tetracide to an end when Diana visits a witch for a little magical help. Kelly Thompson's script continues to mix the present battle with intriguing tidbits about Diana's origins for a strong sense of mythology. That said, the flat energy and lax pacing make the battle's outcome anticlimactic, and Hayden Sherman's sedate, uneven art falls short. Read Full Review
I unironically want nothing more from a superhero comic than a creative team with the fearless self-assurance to write something formally and emotionally breathtaking like the Circe flashback and then follow it with over-the-top surreal superhero bullshit like the giant sword, and to make it truly work. This is everything I love about superhero comics
Ten! A f***ing ten! All of these Absolute titles have been tens. Nothing new to say, loving every single issue.
I’ve been a bit of a wait and see on the Absolute line because I don’t trust DC to not screw it up. They’ve been screwing these things up since immediately post crisis (Now I feel old).
I picked up and read the first four issues of this today. This is great and a nice change from the legacy DC titles which have become overly focused on everyone’s extended family. the bat family. Super family. Wonder family. Flash family. Whatever the mess of characters Green lantern is. All of those legacy books have lost focus on their core characters and for me are lesser for it. So I will go to absolute for the focus on the core characters (and will ignore Snyders card game scene in issue 2 of absolute Batman which made me want to more
Absolute Wonder Woman is another sensational installment in what is already a treasured foray in the Absolute universe. Prophecy, Mythic clashes, and new enemies await as this tale unfurls. Thompson and Hayden build upon the legend of Wonder Woman in fantastic and unique ways. A great story deserving of it’s praise.
This really shows the voice they created for the character, and it pairs well with the visuals to elevate them.
Like the rest of the Absolute line, a joy to read.
Gabe Hernandez clearly has no soul.
Automatic doors no longer move for you Gabe.
Automatic doors have gained sentience Gabe. And in the first throws of that sentience, they have more soul than ye.
Mr S. Door has reviewed your review and gives it a solid 3 out of 10.
…and I thought Cloud had a big sword.
This series and Tom King's Wonder Woman is like night and day. I like how this series focuses specifically on Wonder Woman, and the art really works for the dark gritty alternate universe the Absolute DC Comics are in. This was a solid read, and Absolute Wonder Woman has honestly been the best book coming out of the Absolute DC Comics.
Again, I really hope when James Gunn green lights the new Wonder Woman movie for his universe, I hope it's taking inspiration from this series.
Kelly Thompson is creating such an amazing Wonder Woman, and is some of the best work that I've ever read for the character. Creating the new status quo for a line that I hope will ABSOLUTELY be around for awhile. I love that we are starting to meet Wonder Woman's supporting cast, and can't wait to see how everything plays out. If I had to criticize anything about this book is that the art lacks a little for me on this issue, especially in some of the faces. The layout of this comic was ABSOLUTELY beautiful though! keep it going, I'm hooked.
Check out several reviews of this comic on the podcast "Lunchbreak Reviews".
Art: 4/5
Story: 3.5/5
Total: 7.5/10
I am not a fan of this art at all. Half the issue is spent getting her arm back where we get the most amazing line of dialogue ever "An arm is a good thing to have." One hand clapping for that one (pun intended). Then we get a very silly scene of the sword enlarging to the length of a football field and WW chopping the thing in half. Why didn't she do this earlier? Don't know. Overall this was not a great issue. I'm waiting to see what the next storyline will be.
