You Don't Read Comics - Russ Bickerstaff
Feb 28, 2025The first major plot arc of the series draws to a close with a cliffhanger ending that finds Diana being pulled straight into hell. So...yknow...no rest for the hero. Its cool that theres no breather between one climax and the introduction of the next big conflict, but it would be nice to allow Wonder Woman a bit of time to get acclimated to a world that she hasnt quite found herself able to adjust to quite yet. Every previous incarnation of Wonder Woman has allowed for that on some level. The constant peril is another clever stylistic Thompson addition to Dianas narrative rendering. Read Full Review

Feb 26, 2025Absolute Wonder Woman #5 drives home how compelling Diana of the Wild Isle origin story is. The mother-daughter relationship between Circe and Diana did so much to help get over what defines this version of Wonder Woman. That led to Wonder Woman's iconic lasso to take on a twist that is unique to the Absolute Universe. How that then transitions into the next big story for Absolute Wonder Woman was done so naturally your immediately invested in where Diana's journey goes from here. Read Full Review

Feb 26, 2025Absolute Wonder Woman #5 is a successful and satisfying conclusion to the series opening arc. Even though there may be many more stories to tell from Dianas past, Thompson brings the two storylines in these first five issues together in a nice bow, concluding the emotional arc underpinning Dianas first appearance on Earth. Its a strong first entry in a promising new series. Read Full Review

Beginning to end, this inaugural storyline was pure perfection in terms of both writing and artwork, akin to Scott Snyder's excellent Court of Owls storyline in BATMAN 14 years ago. I can't wait to see where the next storyline takes us!

Kelly Thompson and Hayden Sherman are well on their way to producing an all-time great Wonder Woman run. This version of Diana represents everything that's great about the character. She's smart, brave, compassionate, and willing to put others first. Her solution to defeat the Tetracide was brilliant as well as uplifting. I can't wait for the next issue, wish it was coming out next week instead of next month. Oh and I should mention Sherman's ridiculously great art. The action pages leave you on the edge of your seat and his expert paneling is joy to read.

Stuck the landing beautifully. The Absolute line has ushered in a new era of quality at DC. Marvel's new Ultimate line is great in parts. Absolute DC trounces it. The only thing Marvel are doing that comes close, is the new Ultimate Spider-Man.

Yeah. Great stuff once again in my favorite issue thus far. Sherman continues to put out career-defining work, while Thompson presents a beautifully-crafted story and script. I'm so glad this has delivered, and then some, after being my favorite of the initial three Absolute books that were announced.

"My mother was right" -Me every day as an adult Kelly Thompson continues to put the theme of motherhood front and center. Diana the child, tried to do everything her own way. Not to minimize how successful this campaign had been to this point, because Gateway City and its people were still standing above ground. But Diana lost one arm and even after slicing the Tetracide, the treat is still very much alive. Diana found herself pondering what could she do after all her efforts looked to be voided by the Tetracide. What did she do? She remembered what her mother told her; she remembered the lessons from her mother. More specifically, a lesson where they butted heads. Circe had created a weapon of sorts for Diana. A Really solid first story arc. The pacing was tight, the art was consistent. Might have to read this in Trade Paperback form

This series is some of Thompson's best work and she did such a fantastic job with the timing of these flashbacks weaved through out the current fight to really demonstrate Diana's nature.

Though I like the way this ended, I feel that the writing is very lazy. What I mean by that is there was plenty of time in the other issues to establish the lasso. Instead, it seems incredibly convenient that it's exactly what Diana needed to beat the monster. The idea of something that makes anything is going to drastically change future stories as the reader will constantly be thinking she can use the lasso to solve almost any problem, especially when Steve can easily talk her down. Again, though I liked how it ended, I just think future stories are going to be muddied by the resolution. My Comic Review Channel - https://youtu.be/IF8i3lK5etA
