You Don't Read Comics - Russ Bickerstaff Oct 18, 2023

Williams extends certain aspects of Power Girls personality that make her who she is. The inadvertent damage is a recurring theme that makes Power Girl seem relatable. Her desire to go beyond the physical confines of superheroism to try to deal with problems on a more holistic level is one that never really had the opportunity to be nearly as prominent as it should have been in the past. Hopefully, Williams can look into that a bit more closely. Williams writing in the first issue suggests a willingness to explore the title characters semi-disheveled single-girl lifestyle, which should be fun in future issues as well.  Read Full Review

I have a lot of affection for this character over the decades and am always glad to see a new series for her. Leah Williams covers a lot of ground in this opener and that's a packed and familiar thing so I'm more curious as to what the next few issues will be like. I want to see this virus storyline and where it can unfold but I mostly just want to see more time with Paige and Omen together and throw in some fun with Streaky as well. It's a solidly launched title that does everything it needs to and hints at what it can be if it gets the time to do so, so I'm hopeful we'll get there. Read Full Review

Power Girl #1, surprisingly, is not bad. With a new alter ego and a new purpose in civilian life, Power Girl #1 is a solid mix of personality, action, and intrigue. Mix a good script from Williams with an excellent art team, and you get a decent comic. Read Full Review

Power Girl #1 is a good start to the series but has room for improvement. Amalaks a good nemesis for Power Girl but I was never sure what his power set was and the fight between them is over way too quickly. Power Girl also needs to have a personality thats more than just a template. Still, Im looking forward to next issue after this issues great cliffhanger ending. Read Full Review

There's nothing wrong or bad about Power Girl #1. It's just the comic doesn't stand out. It has its moments. It has entertaining moments. But it lacks really memorable moments. As an introduction to the character, it works, but overall, it feels like back-up stories released as a first issue instead of a big splash to hook the reader. Hopefully, the second issue gives us a bit more, and what's hinted at has potential, but not sure you'd miss much by skipping this issue and starting with that one. Read Full Review

I know others have been wanting more, but I truly feel P.G. setting up for a great series. I’m interested in the characters, and the dialogue is captivating. The art and colors deliver with great facial expressions. Particularly in the beginning when most artists just give talking heads for the set up. Ink lines are styled creatively and the panel work is inventive beyond the “Ho-hum” standard. The lettering could add more punch for Peej. I’m a designer in publishing and create graphic novels, so I’m a bit particular in that area. All in all great start and looking forward to the next issue!

Loved the Alternate Covers for this issue. Story has potential and art was fantastic especially with facial expressions. Not a great #1 as far as showcasing Power Girl to readers.

Burning Hot-take that I never thought I would say: I think Leah Williams honestly has talent as a writer but has been totally failed by editorial at DC and Marvel.

Before you ruin me in the comments, here me out. We know from interviews that she didnt know much about Power Girl and asked for help about her history (as it is confusing), and DC instead told her to make her own character with the skin of Power Girl. This is just setting her up for failure. As for Marvel. Well we know Marvel editors are some of the least talented people around based on 'waves arms at all the failed Marvel books with several reboots'.

As for this book itself, while its not great, it does show hints that Leah is trying. The villain of this more

I really liked how Williams wrote Power Girl in the Special Issue from May of this year, so I thought I would give this one a shot. While I don't know that I enjoyed this as much as that story, it's still pretty solid and enjoyable. I thought the art was nice and I think it fits nicely with the story presented. I just wish this issue had something more, in that there wasn't a whole lot for me to latch onto here, if that makes sense. I feel similarly to how I felt about this week's other Dawn of DC first issue (The Flash #1), in that the potential for this to be better is definitely there, but it's not quite fully capitalized on, in my opinion. However, I will stick around for me to see how things progress. I had high hopes for this series a more

Earlier this year, Leah Williams’ Power Girl Special #1 set up the stage for this new series, with Paige learning more about her new powers (as a result of the Lazarus Rain events) and dealing with issues related to imposter syndrome with how she fit into the Super Family. So it was an interesting choice by Williams to kick things off in the debut issue with Power Girl pretty, well, powerless. A C-list villain bests her and then she’s admonished by Superman for her actions. Superman then asks her to investigate a new issue due to her Kryptonian roots, which doesn’t seem like a great setup for someone who is already dealing with imposter syndrome. I’m hoping this is all a means of allowing Paige to further define who she is rather th more

Unsubtle politics, nerfed breasts, a stupid name change, an annoying antagonist, a jobbing protagonist, and an uninteresting setup. Just one more garbage DC book that will sell horribly and be forgotten.

Leah Williams’ Power Girl still doesn’t feel like an authentic version of Power Girl. I’ve followed the back ups in Action Comics and the Power Girl: Special, so I knew what I was getting into, and was hoping for improvement, but nope it’s still ingenuine and relatively unappealing.

Eduardo Pansica’s art is fantastic, and elevated by Farjado Jr’s coloring. The issue is very bombastic and the action sequences were the only parts I had fun reading. The antagonist set up for this arc Amalak is the only thing keeping me intrigued in the story.

My main problem with this issue, is that it’s just not a Power Girl suited story. Another problem is that Power Girl really can’t do anything for herself when written more

As I said in my video review, there are two types of writers, ones that understand the character and write stories around that character, and the second type that wants to tell a story and mangles the character to fit into that story. Williams is the second type. This is not Power Girl. Punching portals like America Chavez in Doctor Strange 2? What is even going on. Auctioning off alien technology? This is just crap. I won't be purchasing any more of this run.
