Comics: The Gathering - Harlan Ivester Aug 28, 2019

This is probably the most difficult comic I’ve ever had to write about. Its structure makes it hard to analyze in a traditional way compared to what a normal issue would be like. Marvel Comics #1000 does what it sets out to do on each page very well, but some are definitely more interesting than others. I’m giving this a positive score because of the generally upheld quality throughout, but at $9.99, this is still something I can only recommend to die-hard Marvel historians. Read Full Review

While I do think the good material in this book outweighs the bad, at the end of the day this is a decent-sized commitment both financially and in terms of time just to read the thing. Mileage will definitely vary for people whether it's worth it or not. That said, if you're a diehard Marvelite, I think you're going to love this book. Read Full Review

It's kinda sad, that the best 1000 issue, was made up as a stunt. It finally has a substance. Main story from Ewing, was really good, and most of the one shots were good. Really the only that I didn't liked were Hercules and Apocalypse. Rest of them were at least competent.

Definitely a cash grab, but it's well constructed enough and has a lot of good small tales in it. I liked every spidey story in it, Brad meltzers the most. There are some that were pretty bad like the Iron Man one, which at first I thought was an ad. Funny to also see Kareem Abdul Jabbar writing a Jessica Jones story. Also, Al Ewing is awesome, as if anyone needed that reminder. The art is great, with many A listers coming back to draw. Idk if I need to read 1001, but a good solid recommendation from me

Very nice issue. Ewing really is good with continuity and there were some pretty good pages inside. I think it is worth its price and i'll be glad to read it later. So what was your favourite story ?

This is a Brobdingnagian riot of one-page vignettes. Some are exquisite, some are pointless, some are infuriating. Al Ewing threads a centuries-long plot through them all to create groundwork for a continuity-heavy story to come: The saga of the Eternity Mask. It's not something to read straight through repeatedly, but it has some jewels and the foreshadowing succeeded in hooking my interest.

    Prelude:
The impossible book to review. Does it hold up?

    The Good:
Even though I'm not knowledgeable in Marvel History, I found the story interesting throughout, especially Ewing's. It was for that story that most of my praise comes from.

Though that's not to say that the rest were bad, mostly mediocre but there were some really great issues.

    The Bad:
For me, this screams cash grab. After DC's success with Action Comics #1000 and Detective Comics #1000 (which were earned), Marvel has tried to justify their own #1000 with none of the impact.

A lot of these issues just felt like padding. Yes, it's a celebratory issue, but so many of these stories didn't land for me.

It's a good compilation of many great one page stories like The Farmer, Till you die, Professor cold call, The tender flakey taste of Weltschmerz along with Ewing's continuity tale as I named it. Strong ones with some meh and goofy ones but more good than bad. Worth reading but also completely skippable. weird book I tell ya.

Cool concept for this anthology. This is a comic you leave on your coffee table and consume at a leisurely pace. Some of the one pagers that caught my eye on first glance- Zdarsky's Iron Man was whip smart, Alex Ross's Hulk made me chuckle and Mr. Slott channels Peter Parker. Saving the Allred page for the next browse!

The way Ewing restructures continuity is pretty great. There's too many things here to comment on. I will say there were more hits than misses, and some of these stories were actually rather poignant. The anthological storytelling is what drags some of this down.

I dunno that it will sell a million copies as Cebulski insinuated on social media, but I'm glad I'm getting a hard copy of this one. A lot of thought and care went into curating this book.

In essence, it's a series of one-page vignettes loosely tied to the 80-year history of Marvel Comics. Some are poignant, some are powerful...and some are goofy (I'm talking to you, Deadpool!). Old characters are given their moment to shine next to the modern heroes.

By and large, creative minds going as far back as the Grim Reaper allows contributed. It was great to see Simonson, Claremont, Frenz and others of the 70's and 80's in the book, as well as what could be some of George Perez's final work seeing as he's largely retired. more

This book is weird. Some parts are great some are a chore. The mask stories were cool but its just so random throughout that it didnt really sell me on the book. There were some cool pages. I like the concept but im not sure it came through.

For Marvel Comics 1000, I hoped for the best but expected the worst. In reality, this 80th anniversary celebration issue fell somewhere in between. I really liked Ewing’s main story, and I hope their is an announcement of his planned follow-up soon. Some of the one page stories gave me a good laugh but others were just plain unnecessary

It's what I expected, nothing outright bad but not worth the price. There is some top notch art in here from both veterans and new talent I haven't seen before. Most writers, however, don't get the space needed to explore their piece. The structure of this book is neat and the the Al Ewing story throughout is interesting but not enough for me to read #1001.

Did ya ever shell out ten bucks for a comic and then realize you got nothing of any real substance? Welcome to this book. It may have some future meaning but it’s a chore to get there and not worth the work.
