Timeless: 2021

Timeless #1 was a great one shot for any fan of Marvel comics. Theres a lot of surprises and gives a really cool glimpse into the Marvel Universe this year. Timeless #1 is a solid read that focuses more on one character than teasing out what's to come. There's only about 3 pages total that does that and some of the teases we generally have answers to. But, it's that end page that'll have readers in the know lingering and excited for what's to come. In an age of leaks and spoilers it's a reveal that has been kept impressively quiet. Timeless is probably catnip for Kang fans, but its also very dense and requires your full attention. I wonder how this issue reads for someone who was introduced to the character in Disney+s Loki. (This years Kang the Conqueror series is probably a better entry point for them.) But to the credit of writer Jed Mackay and the expanded art team, its still an entertaining diversion that offers a peek behind the curtain of the unknown future. Im giving this one a perfect 10. What minor flaws are present is eschewed by the story being told here being a not only a great examination of a long running villain but is a strong story in its own right. It didn't even need the tease at the end. Id like to see this done with other characters because honestly if you've never read a book with Kang in it your whole life; you'll know all the essentials after this. The small character moments hit well, one im not going to spoil nesr the end is great. Even this random narrator character introduced is retry compelling. Art is strong and consistent as well. Yeah, 10 out of 10 for this. Do more of this marvel.

This could have just been an extended trailer of upcoming attractions like Incoming! or Infinite Frontier #0, but I'm delighted to say that MacKay, who's had a great couple of years in general, has more interesting things to say than that and pushes the trailer content into the background of a genuinely compelling character study of Kang that's worth reading on its own merits. And of course it looks great when Kev Walker draws it. A wonderful surprise.

I wasn't that interested in this. MacKay has been a soli writer, but I didn't think he could make a Kang story interesting for me. I was wrong. This was great. Maybe it's because my expectations were so low, but I really liked this. And all three artists were on point and their work complemented each other well. Even Greg Land, whose art I'm not the biggest fan. I don't hate it, I think it's passable but here it was better than usual.

I bought this because I get a kick out of the Marvel preview one shots like Incoming. I didn't realize that it was a Kang-centric story nor did I realize it was written by MacKay (obviously I saw Kang on the cover but didn't really pay much attention to that, it was a total ComiXology impulse buy). MacKay is one of my current faves, but Kang is a bit fine IMO. Like the design but find Marvel time travel stories to not usually be among my favorites. However this turned out to be a pretty great one-shot. Although yes it sets up various Mavel future stuff, it works far better as it's own story than any other of the annual one-shots, partially I think because it's got a small cast and a tight plot. It was a good Kang story by MacKay and I did enjoy it but that's because I have been coming into these things with zero expectations. Worth a read if you're a Kang fan. Walker, Land and Bagley all meshed well. I have to say that I was impressed with Bagley because his art was really good here which is amazing for how fast he works but he took his time and had detailed work especially the backgrounds. His inker Hennessy deserves a nice dinner out of this. Overall, I am not eager to find out about the teases but if they pop in my pull list I'll read them but nothing that makes me super excited.

So I really liked the main story, as in Kang's characterization. Now the hints we got for the future... those didn't impress me at all. I couldn't care less about what's going in Strange Academy, dropped that book a long time ago. Replacing Iron Fist because of idiots screeching online that "iT's OfFeNsIvE hE's WhItE aNd NoT aSiAn" is absolutely disgusting behavior from Marvel. Never cave in to online morons. Danny Rand is Iron Fist, just as Tony Stark is Iron Man, Bruce Wayne is Batman, Matt Murdock is Daredevil etc. Same thing with Punisher, they dropped the logo for the same idiotic reasons. The skull looked great and it fit the character perfectly, not that cheap bullshit they're selling right now. Really don't care about "humanity with dominion over Earth", been there, done that sooo many times regarding X-Men, it seems like once Hickman will be gone, Marvel will go back to the same boring X-Men status quo that Hickman has shaken, hence all the success. And I can't stress enough that I really, really, really don't want to see Winter Soldier turned against Steve, that just shows the lack of ideas from the purported House of Ideas. The whole Spider-Gwen thing is a meme at this point and while I liked the Young Avengers in the past, I have zero faith in Marvel's writers doing them justice today. The last page intrigues me, I'll give them that. And the whole Avengers vs X-Men vs Eternals...well, Avengers vs X-Men was bound to be, given Krakoa's international stance but I'm very cautious of anything involving Aaron. I am curious of how Eternals will be involved in this and I just hope Gillen won't give up that book once he'll start writing Immortal X-Men. So overall, very good issue but a ton of bad ideas from Marvel loom over the horizon, not feeling very confident about the future. more

Worth reading. I know Rich Johnston is jizzing at all the prospects of this comic - "yeah mate, it is duh best comic ever!!!!!!!! da first act is called... da promish... lemme write 10 articles on it!!!" He really is a piece of shit. But this comic isn't. The end.

I know, yet fairly frequently, he gets the scoop. You just have to swim through a cesspool to find it. Regardless what anyone thinks of him as a “journalist”, he has proven himself a piece of shit as a person. He lets people who agree with him spew the most vulgar, vitriolic comments but bans anyone who remotely disagrees with him. That’s why I don’t even bother commenting on his site anymore.

Yeah he does, you're right about that. I hate to admit it but more than once Rich got some rumors early on that turned out to be true. Still, I've decided that in his case the costs outweigh the benefits. As in, I'm not eager to receive the tons of lefty shit and outright hate he throws at people just to get a rumor about comics. Eventually they'll spill out on other websites and I'll find the news from there.

I think it's a very solid read. Definitely worth it. Can't say I'd put it on a list to read again but, what we hot was a good Kang, a pretty good story and some ok teases about the upcoming events.

GOOD: Great one shot issue telling the story of where Kang is at presently..whenever present may be in his world. Walker has the best pencils in the book by far. Great characterization of the Conqueror himself. There is an actual story going on here while being a preview of things to come. VERY ambitious ending. BAD: The Marvel previews...only 1 has my interest and that is only cause of a book I am currently reading.

And *that's* how you make a "coming attractions" one-shot interesting! All the teasers are crammed into a few brief pages, and in the balance of the double-sized issue, the creators go whole hog on a compelling villain-on-villain fight. The conflict itself is sized appropriately for 40-ish pages, and it's supported by a laudable level of insight into Kang's character.

I wasn't sure what to expect from this one, and what we got was... Neat. The Kang story is competent, but what this comic really serves to do is tease the next year of Marvel storylines. As far as that goes, I mean, it's fine. I'm excited to see where some of these go. Also the final tease is big if true. I wonder if they'll get Gaiman to do it, or if Cates will do it as he's a huge fan of the character.

In summation, somewhat of a mess that's still fun. (Spoilers contained within!) Timeless #1 is an odd bird. It continues this focus on Kang, an amazing character that is well deserving of an increases profile. Given the rumors that he will be introduced into the MCU as a major villain soon, I am apprehensive at where this increased focus will take the character. As a self-professed Kanganite, who typically will buy *any* issue featuring the character, I was excited to read Kelly and Lanzing's "Kang the Conquerer", despite my previously mentioned misgivings. This series ended up being all but perfect. It presented a cyclical, enclosed story, and was focused primarily on Kang(s). Timeless #1, following close on the heels of that 5-pa rt series, had a *lot* to live up to. Functioning as a strange combination of a primer for new readers, a setup for a major Marvel event, and as introducing Miracle Man(?) of all characters into the 616 Universe, this issue felt pulled in too many directions. I did feel that the writer added some depth to Kang, but some of his characterizations clashed with Kelly & Lanzing's protrayal, IMHO. All in all, absolutely no regrets on the $5.99 spent. It was a full main feature issue with no backup to pad the page count, it packed a ton of story into one issue, and of course, it featured Kang. For he is Kang. Recommended for fellow Kanganites or Marvelites. more

110% Kang! Brilliant! I really like the character of Kang and enjoyed Kang the Conqueror (2021). Though I was somewhat disappointed in the ending of Kang the Konqueror. But this One-Shot had it all! Being strong through some kind of challenging weaknesses. Even though the weaknesses may not be the weaknesses that Kang gives himself but plays with the weakness of "Doom" and having a companion as a "weakness". And the ending: Kind of mysteriously ambiguous (for everyone who does not understand Kang yet) - I truly loved it! The story was on a level so epic (Kang's motivation and need for challenges) that I could read hundreds of Kang comics like this. But I am so pleased and glad that this was "only" a One-Shot. There needs nothing to be added and nothing to be removed. I read the comic in "long" (for only 43 content pages) 47 minutes. I enjoyed every second of it. The art was OK, but the story was great! So much depth! It was the first time - I looked up the name of the writer (Jed MacKay) [Oh yeah: He writes "Moon Knight" - I saw that name before; And also "Strange"! - I haven't sealed the comic yet, because I definitely want to read it again After finishing the comic and thinking about it, I got tears in my eyes realizing how fantastic it was! If anyone feels the same way and has read other comics like this one. I would be happy to get recommendations to read.
