1602: Witch Hunter Angela #1

Jun 20, 2015

I found it hard to get into the story. Angela is an interesting character, I liked her previous appearances, but this title did not work well for me. As much as I liked the art, I found the story lacking and the Battleworlds setting is actually getting a bit old for me.

A-Force #1

Jun 12, 2015

I did have fun reading this first issue, but I just kept asking myself if this A-Force was going to play any active part in the whole Secret Wars thing, or if it's just going to be a limited attempt at implementing the word du jour, diversity, in Marvel's line-up. Whatever the answer is, it was still enjoyable, especially with She-Hulk in charge, who is such an underused character, and the creative team did a good job there.

It's tough writing for Barbara Gordon, because while the overall tone of the book is very dark and gritty, Barbara's voice is still sharp and funny. As it happens, you don't want anyone else to write this book but Gail Simone. She knows Babs inside and out, she knows her story, her desires, what drives her and what she fears. It's a great first issue for readers to jump on board, the art is great, so are the colours...

This book was a fun, entertaining and surprising first issue. It doesn't feel the same at its sister title, Batgirl, and has a voice of its own. My favourite part was the art, it did justice to the characters and the overall tone of the book.

Black Widow (2014) #1

Jun 20, 2015

The artwork is fantastic and the writing is solid, it's great to see Black Widow get such an interesting, compelling book. The only thing is, I would have liked something to make me buy issue #2, but the story seemed to be over with the last page, and it felt more like a one-shot than an ongoing title.

It's not easy, writing Carol Danvers. She's one of the most human characters in comics, and she also has one of the strongest drives. Yet here, DeConnick also establishes doubt, confrontation and questioning to Carol's life, making her even more fleshed-out, even more real.

Yet another well-executed, hilarious issue. My only problems with it were the hideous cover and the fact that I can't exactly see if this is all going somewhere (I'm sure it is, but still). Otherwise, fantastic job from the creative team.

Constantine: The Hellblazer #1

Jun 12, 2015

There is a darkness to this book that is deeply troubling, something very cynical and cold, but as opposed to the new 52 take on Constantine, it does not feel fake or forced, but it seems like it is coming out of the character itself. Every panel is beautifully drawn, and the story unfolds simply and smoothly with just a little bit too much dialogue, but hey, I'm so happy I get to read Constantine's adventures again, I'm not complaining. And I'm so glad they dropped to outdated font for the title and replaced it with this.

Gotham Academy (2014) #1

Jun 12, 2015

This is what every comic aimed at young adults and teens should aim at, really. While it is modern and relevant to the youth of today, it doesn't over-use technology and social media as a means to tell its story - it barely them at all in fact. I'm absolutely in love with the art, with the Hogwarts-esque school, with Maps, with the overwhelming presence/absence of Batman... As usual with titles from the Bat-family, the tone has to be dark and grim, which hasn't prevented the writer from bringing humour and emotion into the mix. Fantastic read, highly recommended.

Grayson #1

Jun 12, 2015

Dick is dead, long live Grayson. DC's prominent sex-symbol has left Gotham for a finishing-school where he lives and work for a mysterious organization known as Spyral. What starts out as a seemingly simple mission to retrieve a target turns, of course, into a smaller piece of a larger puzzle. Who is Spyral? Why is Grayson working for them? And who is he sending secret messages to? All these questions will, I'm sure, bring even more. Fantastic art, and the writing is very compelling, I'll definitely be back for more.

Harley Quinn (2013) #1

Jun 13, 2015

It's fun. That's it, really, it's fun. It's stupid, borderline idiotic fun. Everything turns into a joke in this book, which could be nice if only Harley Quinn, one of DC's most popular villains, was still not written as a 12 years old brainless child. And to make it worse, the issue is filled with different ideas, different events, making you feel like you've simply read a patchwork of mini-stories.

There is much to expect from one of DC's top-selling books, yet this issue failed to deliver on all counts. The story, much like the art, was everywhere and it was tough the follow. The art was too detailed and the overall issue looked messy. Green Lantern has to be one of the most annoying characters I've encountered in comics - apart from that joke about Batman's deep voice - and it was a highlight of the issue to see him manhandled by Superman.

Midnighter (2015) #1

Jun 12, 2015

DC has made a few attempts at getting their very own Deadpool, from Deadshot to Harley Quinn, but I think they might have found him in Midnighter: it's hilarious, bloody, irreverent, trashy, but the book also has something Deadpool doesn't: ambition. I feel like Midnighter could take the readers into unexpected, dangerous territories.

Ms. Marvel (2014) #1

Jun 12, 2015

While it is very touching and funny, this issue relied a bit too much on classic teenage problems and pathos, and I wish it would have distanced itself from that. But when you get right down to it, it's still a kick-ass first issue, with a kick-ass leading lady, offering a fresh take on an old character. It brings a lot of fresh new ideas to the table, the writing is very good, and the art is quite fantastic.

Let's just hope this was DC You's first and only really bad book. Roy Harper is a character I've always found engaging, yet it did not feel that way in this issue. I really don't see why this book was given a second chance after the horrible New 52 version, while others like Supergirl got axed. I guess not every decision can be right.

Saga #1

Jun 13, 2015

Mature and fascinating, Saga is a comic unlike any other at the moment. you can tell from this first issue that it's going to be epic, between the raging war and the freelancer, but at the same time, the main couple makes it feel very intimate and personal. Very few comics are able to balance that the way Saga does. The art is superb, creating an original world and populating with fantastic creatures.

I'm a die-hard Secret Six fan. I screamed with joy when they announced the title would be back. I bounced with excitement when Simone was announced as the writer. Then the book came out, and I enjoyed reading it again, even though the tone was somewhat different to the last volume. But even I have to admit that it's a mess, never less so than in this issue. Obviously, this was originally issue #3, but for some reason, it got swapped with what was issue #4, but that was a mistake. Not only does the tone of this issue reverts back to issue #2, it also makes it difficult to understand how they went from this issue to the one before, which never mentions anything about Scandal, Ragdoll and Jeanette coming to attack them. I'm not sure what DC is doing with this book, it just feels like they're trying to kill it or something. I understand there were some difficulties in the very early stages, with some members of the team facing hard times in their private lives, but I can't imagine affecting the book that much. I pray to the banshees that this book recovers from the hot mess it's in at the moment, but I'm really not sure how.

Secret Six Vol. 2 #1

Jun 12, 2015

We're off to a great start with this title. Nicola Scott, one of my favourite artists, and Gail Simone, one of my favourite writers, pair together to offer us an intriguing, sexy, rotten, highly disturbing book, that is sure to haunt your nights. It truly is a craft to make the reader interested in every single aspect of the story treated in one issue, especially when there are so many - Catman's past, Batman's involvement in the book, the mysterious boss, the card, Scandal's loss.

Jun 12, 2015

I thought Spider-Gwen's solo series was long overdue, and this issue did not prove me wrong, but I just wished they had something slightly different with it. The inner dialogue, the desire to prove herself to her city, her relationship with her dad, it all screams Batgirl. However, I'm happy Marvel gave her a chance.

Spider-Woman (2014) #5

Jun 12, 2015

It's going to be difficult not to think of Batgirl every time a hero gets a new costume and brings major change to their lives, but I see very little comparison there. Batgirl's change was not necessarily for the best (at first at least) whereas Spider-Woman's is a definitive improvement. This book is taking an exciting new direction, the art is amazing and I can't wait to see where the story takes us.

If I did enjoy the book in general, I simply wished it had had a bit less dialogue, especially since so much of it was redundant. Hopefully, it will give Spider-Woman the place she rightfully deserves in Marvel's line-up.

As it happens, it was a bad idea because you learn literally nothing that you haven't guessed by reading issues #1-12. Ok, the art was still nice, and it was great to see Kara and her parents, but its value really stops there. For shame, there was a lot that could have been done with this origins story.
