Black Science #7 |
Jul 30, 2014 |
This is an epic in the making, but it side steps the black holes that most comic book epics fall into. Namely feeling lackluster issue to issue but forming a solid whole upon completion. *Cough* Hickman *cough*. Remender keeps things interesting every single month and storms ahead full speed with reckless abandon. I feel like Im inching farther and farther off the edge of my seat with each issue that passes. By the time this series has ended Ill be hanging off the very edge of existence. |

Colder: The Bad Seed #4 |
Jan 28, 2015 |
Tobin writes with a mix of confused terror and hopeless humor that embodies the insanity of it all so well. It is rendered in such pristine detail that I wonder how Ferreyra gets through it without making himself sick. It is almost inevitable that we will see a film adaptation of Colder before long, so if you like twisted shit with tons of shock value, this issue delivers another healthy dose of medicine, ya looney freaks. |

Fatale #24 |
Jul 30, 2014 |
I'm sort of still reeling from the fact that it is all over now. I don't know if anything can fill the void left behind by this book, but I also think that feeling is incredibly appropriate to the series. There is nothing left now but to grieve and start again from the beginning. To trap myself in a cycle, reliving each tragedy, each mistake, each heartbreak. To live like Josephine, searching for meaning in a mad mad world. To seek the truth, because I will not deny it. I live in the shadow of Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips. Bravo gentlemen, bravo. |

Five Ghosts #11 |
Apr 23, 2014 |
I dont know what else to say about this book, other than it might be my favorite thing on the stands. Barbiere paces a story with the pure cream of the storytelling. Mooneyham is a beast as he lingers on the small details like a throw pebble, only to follow it up with an explosive demonstrate of energy. The wild and energetic style pulses though this book. I cant wait to read it again. |

"Five Ghosts" is a perfectly oiled machine. The creative team is in perfect sync and the storytelling is near flawless. It's a celebration of the mastery that can only come with creator owned comics, and somehow it continually raises the bar for itself. Every month it pulls of something entirely new and unexpected, but makes it look easy, making it one of the most compelling books being published at Image Comics. |

Godkiller: Walk Among Us #3 |
Dec 10, 2014 |
We like our media to be pretty, presentable, and easily digested. Matt Pizzolo bucks the trend and shows you the unflinching nightmare on the page. But, within that nightmare there is a really important discussion. We can process the horrible nightmares just fine, and we can learn more from them than we thought. We can become better people for having experienced the nightmare, much better than the people we become after reading issues of "Superman." There's no such thing as truth and justice. And, the American Way is completely fucking warped. "Godkiller" doesn't dance around that fact, which makes it necessary and important reading. |

I love a book that provides a lot to talk about. Some books are flashy and pretty but when they are done you aren't left with much more than a tingle and a satisfied sigh. This may just be the best Grant Morrison comic in years. Its not bound by archetypal superheroes, metatextual meanings, and incomprehensible truths, but instead straddles the weird disillusionment that sometimes comes with the act of creation. Tie in issues often feel bloated with heavy exposition, stating their reasons for existence and forcing an otherwise unnatural narrative. “Batgirl Endgame” doesn't concern itself with any of that. Fabien Vehlmann & Kerascot have achieved something with "Beautiful Darkness" that I've never experienced before. They have created a truly melancholic horror book that offers something beautiful. For all intents and purposes this book pleases the eyes and disheartens the soul. It's an odd reading exercise that you won't soon forget, and its joyfully dejected tone doesn't make much sense. Do yourself a favor and preorder Last Born now, you wont regret it since its a thoughtful look at dystopian futures with an engaging element of time travel that feels calmly calculated. Its confident for a debut, not afraid to ask hard questions about society and features stellar art that is sure to be with you for a while. |

Feb 4, 2014 |
Al Ewing and Lee Garbett have managed to twist a character like Loki in a dynamically new and fascinating way. This debut calls everything we know about the character into question before ending with a bang that throws all this business into an investigation of the truth. Ive never had the pleasure of reading a debut issue that is bookended with such wonderful high notes. This is a heavenly new chapter in a storied characters history that is sure to surprise and sow doubt. Loki cannot be an easy character to master but Ewing and Garbett make it look effortless. |

Nailbiter #11 |
Mar 3, 2015 |
"Nailbiter" #11 has all the excellent intrigue of the series but focuses solely on character, which gives it a much more cohesive feel than previous issues. I can't imagine a better way to start the new arc, but if you're looking for answers you'll have to make them yourself. Issue 12 brings the tease of a definitive conclusion for Finch's investigation, but knowing Williamson that'll just be a misdirect. If you really think about what's going on, you can certainly see where the series is going without the obvious exposition. I could be wrong, but the seeds in this issue tell me differently. |

May 6, 2015 |
The odds were against this book, and surprisingly it outdoes the hype. Its a smart tribute that stakes its claim as earth shattering with a tremendous final page that is sure to be talked about for months to come. It may not start off with the insane amount of action some were anticipating, but instead smartly builds the tension to a boil before offering a glimpse of an even larger conflict on the horizon. Apr 7, 2014 |
"Skinned" is beautiful, imaginative, and thought provoking. It doesn't really offer any sort of declarative statement about its world but rather speaks through character. Each of the sentiments offered on the page hold a certain amount of weight, but ultimately the perception of the narrative is left to the reader. Like any good science fiction the questions are more interesting than the answers. Although one thing is for sure, if reality is a disease, then "Skinned" is the cure. |

The Field #1 |
Apr 2, 2014 |
This is an excellent start to a compelling and eerie book that is sure to only get better. The mystery of the book is fascinating, and there is a literal volley of questions within the opening pages that will necessitate picking up issue two. Throw in Roys incredibly dark and character driven work, and add in Brissons tastefully cheesy dialogue and youve got one hell of a series. The Field defies comparison; its a love letter to grindhouse cinema, and a reinvention of the genre in comics. Its steep mystery may leave some out in the cold, but the best stories ask questions of the reader, pushing them to become an active participant in the adventure. The Field does exactly that; it sucks you in, and creates an insatiable urge to know more. Bring on issue two. Lets get weird. |

The Surface #2 |
Apr 12, 2015 |
Delving a bit deeper, Michel Foucaults An Archeology of Knowledge and Grant Morrisons Animal Man are on the same level of discussing discourse about The Surface. Its completely self-referential to what we see could be true. The Surface is a paradoxical post-modern matrix. At only the second issue, I obviously have a lot of thoughts about it. Its not complete yet, nor is it the greatest piece of fiction of all time, but its an important text already that adds to comics as a whole and continuing a tradition of metafiction that engages the reader to read and reflect. |

It deals with many of the themes he's touched upon in the past: legacy, the generational gap, Artificial Intelligence, and the line between hero and terrorist. It has many fundamental themes that hold a mirror to contemporary society in the guise of a huge world scale battle. The overall story is pushed forward ever so slightly, but it is really Willie that takes the spotlight here. We get to see how he deals with death, and what its like to be behind a murder. Its still unclear as to which way hell fall, and if this will become a regular thing, but the cracks in these kids are becoming more clear with each passing month. None of them are who they said they were, and none of them are the resident badass they want to be. |

Jun 27, 2014 |
All that and a ghost who needs the Dream Thief to pull off a break-out means this story will continue to surprise me. As supernatural as this series is based in, its the crime and revenge side that I find most compelling. All these ghost pass on their knowledge to the Dream Thief, whether he wants it or not. This setup leaves unlimited possibilities for whats going to happen next. Thats just the kind of story that deserves your attention, readers. Get in on this caper / paranormal series already. |

Dream Thief: Escape #2 |
Jul 23, 2014 |
Lincolns ghosts knew some shady folks and that comes in handy now and then. I cant recall the last comic I read where sleep was a major Achilles heel for a hero. It does fondly bring to mind how the first series got me hooked. TheDream Thiefalways woke up in some serious trouble. Thankfully, Nitz and Smallwood havent forgotten how to throw curves into this familiar tale. Whoever wears that mask isnt in control of their lives anymore and that looks like where some more havoc will come from. I recommend you sit down and enjoy this ride, good readers. |

Mar 5, 2014 |
Rossmo and Link are perfectly comfortable selling their world as is, and frankly the book is infinitely better for it. Maybe the answers are just lying around the corner, maybe they are far off, and maybe they dont even exist. Whatever the context, Drumhellar concludes its first arc in a courageous and thought-provoking manner that is sure to leave you salivating for the second chapter. |

Drumhellar oozes originality from every orifice and youd be a boring fool not to support this stellar book. |

Thus concludes Ghosteds second arc and while I didnt think it had the same shock and awe of the brilliant first story, Williamsons tight plotting and mastery of straddling genres builds one hell of a conclusion and royally screws his characters proper before heading into a new storyline. Ghosted (2013) #11 |
Jul 9, 2014 |
Truly Williamson has proven himself to be a master of horror, and this issue serves as a reminder that he hasn't forgotten his compelling characters along the way. It's a breath of fresh air in horror that never seems to run out of steam. The only thing that saddens me this month is that we didn't go deeper. I wanted to learn more and really get into the core of what drives Anderson. The answer we got here was that she's driven by her drive, but I think there is still so much more to the character. In any event, her drive has now made her resolve to haunt Jackson for the rest of his miserable life. |

Some of the overt stereotypes (all across the board) were a little obvious, causing the story line to feel simplistic. "Escape From New York" #1 is a first issue that takes its time to build the world around it. It's a fine introduction to fans new and old to the property and nails the tone of the main character. However, it's far from anything new. The real treat is to see how well Christopher Sebela's style compliments this world. With future issues taking us into the great unknown of this crazy and fucked up version of the United States, I have no doubt this book will become legendary. As it stands it's merely a heavy-handed reminder of a movie I loved. But one things for sure, "Escape from New York" will kick your ass out of the world. |

Five Ghosts #9 |
Feb 2, 2014 |
Five Ghosts blazes a trail through what I like to call a pulp revival. If youre not reading it, well shit, I really dont know what youre waiting for. |

The birth of a new religion in a devastated world isnt a solution but a plight. GoGetters channels this unique vibrant energy that I used to tap into with Johnny Quest. It's a rollicking good time centered around a captivating main character and some razor sharp wit. The only thing that really hurts this book is the fact that the last page sting is almost exactly the same as the sting in the first issue. It may seem nitpicky, but it doesnt do much to heighten the threat of the antagonist when we see basically the same scene play out. Still, a fun read in the enjoy it for what it is category and a potentially valuable title for you long box when MPH comes to a theater near you. |

Starlight #4 |
Jun 11, 2014 |
This is by no means a bad book, just one that hasn't found its feet yet. The potential for something more than a alien slugfest is certainly there, and in this instance it would be wise to give Millar the benefit of the doubt. If he continues to capitalize upon the intriguing premise, and delivers a tonally consistent story, I see no reason why "Starlight" won't be worthy of the already optioned 20th Century Fox adaptation. |

This book has got all the ingredients for a delicious Satan Gumbo, Im just not yet sure if the ratios are right for it to earn a spot in my stack. It certainly is unique enough to stand out as one of those books I didnt know I needed, but I also found myself doubling back on more than one occasion for dialogue that didnt quite make sense or flow and when it was over I wish it had taken a little more time to build up to the big battle. All in all, this issue does a fine job at setting up anticipation for those to follow. The artwork continues to impress with its sketchbook-styled lines and faded backgrounds. Its not as action-packed as the previous issues, but as any Mad Men fan would tell you, episodes where less happened often prove to be the most interesting. Copernicus is well developed but only because he borders on a character archetype we already know so well. With a few more issues to find solid footing this robo-noir could really become something special.
