David Melton's Comic Reviews

A lot of the problem I had with this issue is they focus so much on the main characters, that they don't have supporting characters to help move the story along in a natural and fluid way. The art is much the same way; whatever is in the forefront is given a lot of detail and everything in the background was just kind of put there so it wasn't a white page. If the same amount of attention was given to the backgrounds, it would be able to transport you into their world. Instead you have to avoid looking too long at panels so you don't get frustrated. I hope these issues get fixed as they move along with the story, but, as of right now, I can't say I'm going to follow it.

I wish I could get excited and be entertained by these comics. Unfortunately all they've made me want to do is pick up the old issues they're trying to bring back to life.

View Issue       View Full Review

Declan's story was highly-entertaining. Wish the whole comic was about him. If they can round out the other characters in the next few issues, I can see this being a really fun read. At the moment what we have is a lot of action, a lot of blood, and a lot of zombies. It's what you'd expect from a story like this.

View Issue       View Full Review

I'm going to read the second issue to see where things go after this, but for 3.99 I'm not sure this story is worth the cover price.

View Issue       View Full Review

I give everything a couple of chances before I make up my mind on it, but so far not impressed with the first taste I got of this story. They can flesh the characters out more, make them likable and make this superhero scenario fun down the line, but it will be hard to get me into it after doing nothing to make me feel for the characters or even relate to them on any level.

View Issue       View Full Review

I really hope they can smooth things out and deliver a second issue that will do what the first tried to yet failed at doing. Every story has its crowd, at the moment this crowd doesn't involve me.

View Issue       View Full Review

It's only issue number one so some of these character issues could smooth out over the first arc, but at the moment I don't see myself really rooting for anyone, taking away from the excitement of the story and leaving me feeling underwhelmed.

View Issue       View Full Review

I understand the need to build the characters and accept new readers into this story as well as the ones that already know the world, but this first issue wasn't enough to make me come back for more.

View Issue       View Full Review

Not faulting the writing, or the artwork, this title just isn't for me so far so.

View Issue       View Full Review

The artwork in this series is a joy to look at. Nothing mind blowing, but looks good. I wish they would focus more on Daredevil's capabilities but, at the moment, we are focusing on the minor characters that haven't offered much in terms of artistic creativity to this point. I'm a firm believer that good things come to those who wait, so I will see how this first story arc wraps up before making my decision, but it's starting to look more like a series I won't be following much longer.

View Issue       View Full Review

Only time will tell how this series will end up. While it will definitely appeal to certain audiences (especially those still into the whole vampire lore) it unfortunately didn't strike a chord with me.

View Issue       View Full Review

There is one more issue left. I'm hoping it ends on a high note. I believe it will. The people on this title are so extremely talented and I just want to know where I went wrong in thinking this was going to be completely different.

View Issue       View Full Review

The cover is fantastic. It's what initially made me want to check this comic out. Unfortunately, that's where my interest stopped. I do, however, want to give Dark Horse credit for taking a chance on an edgy comic. It's nice to see that creators are being left to their own devices. Hopefully next time it pays off for the reader.

I guess I would describe it this way: if I stumbled upon it at a friend's house, I would think it was a cool book but it wouldn't stick with me after I put it down.

View Issue       View Full Review

This issue ended pretty abruptly so it remains to be seen if this story can hold more weight, but from what I was given there just wasn't anything making me want to come back.

View Issue       View Full Review

It just sucks for me that, at the moment, I'm hoping Reyn is removed from the picture, but having his name as the title of the seriesdoesn't seem to hint that that could actually happen.

View Issue       View Full Review

Just from the dialogue and artwork, you can tell this series wants to be interesting as well as light and fun, unfortunately this first issue is too convoluted as it tries to bring you up to speed.

View Issue       View Full Review

The story as a whole felt rushed. We are in a bar, then we're meeting a priest with a demon sidekick. Then we're meeting a team of “blessed” people. It all happens so fast. Much like when the team is being introduced and you don't know who is who because the names are being said but no one is focused on in panel, this issue seems to be confused and never quite worked its way out of it. Things might turn around in later issues, now that they've given most of the backstory, but it's an uninspiring first issue that doesn't really leave me wanting more.

View Issue       View Full Review

I enjoy Gillen's sense of humor and writing so I'm hoping that I will slowly get into this and feel like a fool for ever having not liked it. McKelvie's art is vibrant and fun to look at. The lettering by Cowles is, as always, perfect for the story. Even with all these talented people though, the issue just didn't strike a chord with me.

View Issue       View Full Review

Going to give the second issue a chance to see if it livens up the story a bit, but I don't think I would spend money on this series based off of this first issue.

Go out and get this series. It's a fun read and it's a piece you can just enjoy reading and not have to take any of it seriously. Just know that you'll start rooting for the bad guy.

All-in-all, this issue was fun to look at, but just felt like issue #1 all over again.

View Issue       View Full Review

I'm interested to see where this story goes; even though it covered a lot of ground in its first issue, it left a lot to be answered. I have read it a few times now and like it more and more each time through. This comic isn't going to come out and tell you what's going on; readers will have to do a little detective work and reading between the lines on their part, but I found that to be fun. I'm interested to see how the first arc unfolds and where Higgins and Siegel take these characters. Not what I was expecting, but that might be better.

View Issue       View Full Review

If you're a fan of Shang-Chi, this is a great continuation of his story. If you haven't been a fan, there is a lot of reading to catch up on, but you're still able to pick this up and work your way through it. Did I mention it's fast-paced. A fun read that you should check out, if for nothing else than to enjoy the action scenes.

I still love this series. It's not like I will stop following it now. This issue just didn't do anything for me and I hope they work on the “solving problems so quickly” issue.

Hopefully this series pays off in the next issue. It has the promise, just hasn't been fully delivered yet.

View Issue       View Full Review

I just want to get all of the issues out at one time so I can stop wondering, but I guess that is also part of the fun.

View Issue       View Full Review

But, back to the issue at hand, no answers. Just more confusion. It's draining, but I'm sticking this series out because I know it will pay off. And, honestly, the questions not being answered is my only complaint. Everything else about this series is top-notch. From the writing, to the artwork, to the coloring by Frank Martin and the lettering by Chris Eliopoulos. My patience is running thin, but that is not their fault. I don't work at Marvel so I don't know what the endgame is. I really want to though.

We find out who killed The Watcher, and we see how the characters will progress moving forward. I enjoyed that this issue didn't have as many unanswered questions, but it did still leave some things to be discovered later. You're not going to get a tightly wrapped package with this series, but you will learn a few things as light is shed on Fury's past and why he does the things he does. This title hascast a shadow of doubt on every Marvel superhero going forward and could play out to be very interesting in future series.

What we are seeing is that Rasputin will takes its time telling us its story and, because of that, some issues might fall a little shorter than the others. I feel that once the stories are all collected they will compliment each other wonderfully, but that means we will get chapters that don't give us too much to get excited about.

View Issue       View Full Review

I think a lot of my enjoyment of this series will rely on whether or not these characters can become less shallow and more interesting.

View Issue       View Full Review

The first issue packs a lot of story into a small space and promises that there is a lot of action ahead. I just wish that they would slow it down a bit and spread all of this story over a longer period of time. I feel readers of this series, and fans of the books and video games, would be patient enough to not need everything handed to them at a frenetic pace. If they can do this over the next four issues, The Witcher has a very good chance at becoming a comic series that I won't want to miss out on.

While this story is lighter in tone at the moment, it looks as though it could head down some dark paths sooner than later. It will be interesting to see where these creators take Silk as it could go in any possible direction right now. For a first issue, it's good. Got me rooting for the main character, made the villain's story interesting as well (that appears to be a pretty dark story), and didn't overburden the dialogue by trying to be too funny all the time. Let's see if Silk becomes a long-lived character at Marvel.

This series is a whole lot of fun. With heavier series out there, Sinergy allows its readers to relax and just enjoy an entertaining story with creative artwork and funny lines about missing genitalia. By the end of this issue, Jess is joining her dad on his missions. Maybe both of them have underestimated just how new to everything she is, and just how many monsters there really are.

I was just having a conversation this morning about how artwork really makes or breaks a title. The story can be great but if what I'm looking at isn't visually appealing I'm more apt to not return to the title. Fortunately for me, I love the artwork just as much as I love the dialogue. Rosanas and Boyd really answer the call with hilarious deadpans, facial reactions to the action that cause you to laugh out loud, and epic fight scenes that flow seamlessly. Everything is working on this title and you really should go and pick it up.

You have to give Higgins and Siegel a lot of credit. They have taken the superhero story and turned it on its ear. These characters aren't just flying around and using their powers to stop crime (hell, some characters don't even have powers) but they are dealing with real struggles like their children not looking up to them, their wives wanting them to get legitimate police jobs, and whether or not you stay loyal or do what's best for yourself.Issue one left me feeling wanting more, and I got what I asked for with issue #2.

This series might be getting missed by regular comic readers that think it's a kid series, but what I've been trying to tell you is that while it's kid-friendly, it's aimed at adults. Pick up all four issues this week and I defy you to not fall in love with it.

This four-issue miniseries offers something for everyone and promises to be a blast to read.

Beautiful artwork and amazing writing make this comic a must-read. While there is action, danger, and intrigue, there's also a commentary on what we've done to our own planet, how we all need someone to watch our back and protect us, no matter how strong we think we are. It will be interesting to see Cosmos and Thulu come face-to-face, as their inevitable battle draws near.

Poetry is a running theme throughout this spectacular one-shot and it embodies a poetic voice in both writing and art. Kot's writing mixes brilliantly with Oleksicki's art and creates this gorgeous world that you can't help but to stare at and escape into. This story is There Will Be Blood meets Dexter, and what we get is a likable character who tries to do everything right but ends up being brought back down by the darkness. Readers that pick up this book will want to tell their friends and talk about the themes at great length. Capturing the imagination, and striking the perfect balance between horror and drama, Close Your Eyes is surely not one to be missed.

What this series has done is subtly scare its readers with graphic imagery that is strangely beautiful and dares you to look away. Cullen Bunn knows how to verbally create an unsettling world that closely resembles the one we live in. Makes you wonder what is just below the surface. In addition, Vanesa's artwork is incredible. Panels that show you everything, but are just vague enough to be interpreted in numerous amounts of ways. I can't wait to see what the rest of this series has in store. At the moment, it's one of the scariest things on the shelves.

I'm going to be bummed to not have anymore issues to enjoy of this story, but I'm also interested to see how this will all play out. This issue is a lot of fun to read, but don't think you're going to get too many answers; you aren't.

The great thing about Thrillbent comics is the panels are made to breathe and move like they're a cinematic adventure, and is the perfect execution for horror and thriller comics like this since you can't see ahead of where you're reading.

When you open this book, just get ready for one of the craziest rides you've ever been on. Keller and Neely make no apologies as they trash the proverbial hotel room that is the traditional comic book format. Monkey erections, humans referred to as “skins”, all out parties, drinking and drugs. Keller keeps the words flowing while Neely fills the pages with humorous and insane imagery. Kristina packs in the colors, making every panel its own little acid trip as bright colors fill the background and push the character to the forefront. Say what you want about this title, one thing is for sure: these artists are giving you their all. They're also making it as fun as possible as from cover-to-cover this series has the feel of a non-stop party.

Love the way that when “Mate” is used in this comic it has an apostrophe before it. A creative twist on an old word. It's little things like that that catch my eye every time I read through this series. Then there are the things that are more in-your-face. Such as Johnny eating a tarantula, watching his comrades lose their limbs and heads, not being able to enjoy the company of women or friends without seeing some disgusting version of someone who died or meant him harm. This whole series is like an acid trip in the best way possible.

Scenes that were inspired by Star Wars, a character that can remain in the shadows despite the room he's in being fully lit, horrific scenes of death, and murder. Fialkov and Gabo take all of these things and weave them into a terrific book that I never want to end.

A young child, a man in shock after the murder of his friend, and a recluse writer with a nervous condition all look to Clive for their next move, but even he isn't sure what to do. It's interesting to watch as these characters are forced to get past their own fears and their own judgement of others in order to survive. It can't be easy for them, but they're finding out more about themselves, and this thing, then they ever would have known otherwise. It will be interesting to see how they work their way out of this and hopefully intact.

Each issue has been funny, interesting, and a great bit of storytelling, but part three has seen the most action. All the build up to these characters fighting each other has finally culminated in this "Who is stronger than who" battle. On top of all that, the train they are all on has been rigged with a bomb. Rick Remender's writing is downright enjoyable. When mixing action, comedy, and horror all together, it has to feel natural and he pulls it off perfectly. Nothing feels out of place in dialogue or intention and that creates an exciting read for its fans.

It's just another facet that goes into this comic that makes it one I'm always looking forward to.

I love this series. I love the characters. I love the humor. I love the world. It's all the best versions of our world and theirs beautifully blended together. Wiebe and Upchurch have created this “All are welcome” environment and we are allowed to play in it for as long as we can. As you're reading this story you feel transported to another place that is not only safe but a blast to experience. On top of that, the characters in this series are among the strongest I've read or seen in any medium. If you're not reading this yet, shame on you.

To accompany the strong writing, Leila Del Duca's art is truly something to behold (Really appreciated the Wes Anderson casting calls in issue #1). Where the first issue had beautiful shots from the moon, this issue throws you smack dab in the middle of a chaotic world and will have you feeling like things are back to normal when you see a gorilla doctor. The colors by Owen Gieni are extremely well done; giving everything a classic, yet futuristic feel, and really making it come alive.

There's a beautiful couple of pages that show Kate and her father, in the past, acting out their scenes alongside the present Kate and Harrington speaking on it. Along with that, and the amazing backstory for Harrington, you are constantly reminded of why this series is so special. No one working on this story is phoning it in and you can feel the love for the subject as it pours from the writing and artwork.

Yes, folks, Keatinge and del Duca have turned Shutter into their own Warhol factory of sorts. Both creators give you their recommendations at the end of the letters column of things they are currently enjoying. It's awesome because they're turning us onto things we may have missed, things we may have skipped, or things that deserve a second look. That's what this is all about, right? Enjoying art in all its forms? Building a community and sharing things and ideas with each other? These two are my heroes.

Not only are we getting a strong story with interesting, dangerous, and exciting characters, we're also getting a closer look at the things we all deal with yet don't vocalize. This book reads like an exaggerated story one might tell at a party, but with the grittiness and honesty of real life. You get so caught up in the action, the intrigue of it all, and you almost miss out on how down-to-earth this story really is; the realistic problems these kids deal with (along with problems not a lot of us have or would want). Remender and Craig continue to build upon the strength of their first arc and constantly bring love and hard work to this story as it moves forward.

Half about a man tired of turning a blind eye and half about him trying to right his wrongs, Southern Bastards is set in a small town in Alabama. It's a town that he's hated his entire life, but a town that's still his home, and he won't stopuntil he gets his point across. Southern Bastards ends with a bloody all-out fight that allows for the next arc to go in any direction the artists please. It's an exciting ending and I, for one, cannot wait to see where Southern Bastards goes next. Jason has promised us that this is just the beginning, that there are more characters we haven't met yet and a lot more of Craw County to explore. No matter what happens, I will guarantee that it will maintain its gritty, honest, and interesting style of storytelling.

This series is doing everything right, and the readers are reaping the rewards. It's great to see these smartmale characters dismiss Velvet as just another woman when, in reality, she's strong enough and smart enough to kill them all. It's comics like this that show you how creativity and great storytelling are not dead. Hollywood may not see the need for strong female characters because they feel there isn't an audience for it, but comics are continuously showing us that that is definitely not the case. Let them have their Adam Sandler comedies and Tom Cruise action movies; I'll gladly take an issue of Velvet over them any day.
