King and Gerard manage to deliver another stellar issue. Theyve reached a level of sympatico that only the best creative teams have. They perfectly balance mundane with the fantastic in this series, while also making readers question everything theyve just read. The enigma of what is real in the book is a fabulous way to keep readers on the edge of their seats and theyve completely nailed the characterization of every character in the book. Mister Miracle is the kind of comic that only comes around rarely. Its such a perfect encapsulation of everything that can be done with comics and its a book that will be talked about for years to come. I've loved this series so far even when it has left me scratching my head. This issue though feels like a one-shot you could hand to anyone who has had a kid or expecting and they can relate to it in some way. Imagine a comic book that is set almost entirely in a hospital room; it's about a mother giving birth and a father bearing witness. Aside from the birth itself, the only other real action here is choosing a name for the baby " a hilarious process that once again underscores Tom King's wizardry with the written word. On the one hand, this story is a 10 - fresh ideas, quality storytelling, great colors, all combining for a terrific read.
On the other hand, I'm firmly in the "what the heck is going on" column.
So here is my guess... we are witnessing the greatest escape ever performed by Mister Miracle, we just dont know it yet. My only reason for this is the line "Weren't your eyes blue?" that Scott said to Barda previously.
That's all I got 😉
In the meantime, I'm enjoying the ride!
THIS is how you integrate background lore and a modern narrative. Knowing that Gerads was having a child when this issue was being completed... It seems like it's written for the creative team, and we're just lucky to get to read it. Utterly spectacular in its mundanity.
If you think reading a whole issue about Big Barda giving birth (quite graphic at times as well) would be a bit weird, you're damn right. But it's just written so well that it just works.
Don't know if it's just me, but I feel that there's quite some foreshadowing in this issue about all this not ending well for Scott (though it's a book by Tom King, so it's pretty much a given).

They’re having a baby! The Fury’s are there to welcome the new little one. The name Jacob is picked out for the baby because of the ladder Scott used to escape repeatedly called Jacob’s Ladder. And both parents are just as shocked, surprised, and lost as I was the first time around.
The baby is born but the cord is wrapped around little Jacob to find that he’s not breathing. Scott uses the knife, created from the flesh of Darkseid, to cut the cord and the baby “escapes” death for the first time!

Everyone's got some embarrassing and awkward extended family members. King and Gerads are so good at this kind of story.
This to me is a return to form for the series. I don't know if the skip month somehow helped my perception of it, but all I know is this is what I wanted from this series back again. Yay! Meaningful dialogue perfectly balanced with humorous dialogue, and fantastic art that really captures what I imagine the stress of pregnancy and childbirth is to the parents. My goodness, that "No one knows anything" line was my favorite, just a perfect panel. I liked this also because it is STILL redefining the genre. A typical action-filled comic book has battles and war, but this entire issue is just as tense without having any of that. I really liked this one and am excited for what comes next.
This title still has me hooked with it's blend of mundane and fantastic as David Harth @ You Don't Read Comics describes it. Yet, I can't stop strongly hoping that the final big reveal of 'this reality' is not a big fail like TV's Lost. Jacob is an interesting new intro into the DCU.
A couple having a baby delivery story dressed way up in mythological drama/war. King knows his way here and I know all of these angles well as parent but it really has nothing to tie it to what we just went through. I can't get over the disconnect between what Scott is doing and what Barda is doing. Weird but maybe that's what King is going for. Mitch Gerards's art fits this to the T.
Don't get me wrong, this series is still very good. It's just that I liked it better at the beginning and I think it has lost almost all momentum. I am a little tired page after page of Scott and Big talking. I think this story needs something *more* to be really memorable.
Meh. Once again I’m waiting for some big reveal or something exciting to happen and what we get is just meh, in my opinion. The art is great as usual but the story i find a bit boring. A whole issue of someone giving birth is not what I find exciting or interesting. I see other people love this book and that’s great, but I still don’t understand why.
