Devil's Reign #1 delivers an amazing opening chapter to this hard-hitting story. If Zdarsky and company can continue to build this narrative up to equal this opening chapter, this story could end up becoming one of the most impactful Marvel events in years. Read Full Review
While some fans may find it derivative, Devil's Reign is a welcome entry point into modern Marvel Comics. Time will tell if the rest of the series will match this first issue. As it stands, however, this is a promising start to something big. Read Full Review
Devil's Reign may hit a familiar narrative beat, and rush its plot a tad, but as a work of storytelling art it's one of the best comics (especially event comics) Marvel has put out in quite some time. Credit a completely in-sync creative team, as well as a narrative with a high sense of urgency and personal stakes, and you have a comic absolutely worth reading. Read Full Review

If you're a fan of the ongoing Daredevil series, Devil's Reign is a must-read, and you should be satisfied with it as a Daredevil story. Fans coming into this without having read that book will struggle somewhat more to catch up, but the story leaves enough there to figure out the basics. I find that Devilu2019s Reign works best if you think of it as the next chapter in Zdarsky and Checchettou's run on Daredevil, just one that happens to have wider ramifications for the Marvel heroes. Devil's Reign #1 gives Marvel's latest big event as hot of a start as you can get. Chip Zdarsky and Marco Checchetto absolutely delivery a fun and complex read as Wilson Fisk executes his ultimate endgame on the Marvel Universe. The way both Marvel's superheroes and villains respond to Wilson Fisk's announcement creates a lot of excitement and intrigue into how things will go down in Devil's Reign. This is certainly one Marvel event not to miss out on. Read Full Review
This book comes in hot and ready-to-go with action, tactical moves, and just straight brutality. Yet Zdarsky and the team have still found a way to make the readers empathetic towards Fisk. Read Full Review
Devil's Reign #1 is a pretty solid start to the event. It lays out the situation and also builds the tension and threat to come. The issue balances action with quieter moments and has enough surprising parts to keep readers on their toes. Overall, it does a solid job of introducing the event to new readers while keeping long time readers engaged with what's to come. While its concept might not feel new and a mix of events of Marvel's past, Devil's Reign #1 delivers a new shine and focus with today's political climate. Read Full Review
Devil's Reign #1 is a good start to a six-issue event that may retread the idea of superheroes being illegal, but establishes its main players and plot so well you'll be on board. The craft and care taken in this first issue is apparent from the very start with no filler or fat to be found. This is a hard-hitting and human character drama of a superhero variety rarely seen in street-level comics. Read Full Review

Devil's Reign feels like it has real stakes! It feels like a limited series Marvel TV Show, and I mean that in the best way possible! It' action-packed, well-written, and filled with thematic art. Read Full Review
Devil's Reign #1 was a mild disappointment, and as a huge Zdarsky Daredevil fan, that sucks. However, I think I've come to expect a lot, and this felt rushed and a bit forced at points. Nevertheless, it looks fantastic thanks to Marco Chechetto's art, and while I was a little bit down here, I expect things to improve quickly. Read Full Review
This event debut has a lot of promise. Unfortunately, clunky dialogue, awkward plot points, and some bad coloring overshadows that promise. Read Full Review
The idea of villains using politics to attack heroes isn't a new one (most notably with DC's Lex Luthor becoming President). By the end of the issue, Fisk has the heroes on the run as even to help pull New Yorkers out of burning buildings makes them a target for Fisk's goon squad. The team's solution… Tony Stark for Mayor? Um, okay? Read Full Review
TOMASSIS TAKESIf this sounds slightly familiar, youre not alone. Besides the obvious connection thematically to Marvels famous Civil War event, this story plot was actually touched on recently in the Charles Soule Daredevil run. In the Soule series Fisk as mayor outlaws vigilantes from New York. To be fair the Devils Reign series appears to be taking the story in a much larger epic event than the Soule story. Phenomenal start to what should be an epic story! Chip zdarsky continues to tell a masterpiece of a daredevil story that shows no sign of slowing down. As someone that collects and reads every issue of every volume of daredevil I love what chip zdarsky has brought to the daredevil mythos and hope he writes it for as long as possible.
Great start, super excited to see where it leads. Anyone who didn't like it is a whiny little bitch baby.
Chip with an excellent start.
God, Checchetto’s art is good.
This issue was amazing. Seems like all the build-up from Daredevil is about to pay off.
Not the most original event- basically just an amalgamation of Civil War and Dark Reign, but Checchetto’s art is as usual phenomenal and Zdarsky is bringing together all the hanging threads of his Daredevil run
Zdarsky kicking some ass
Chip is a Phenomenal writer, and boy oh boy does he know how to start a story with a bang. An amazing beginning to what i hope it will be a very fulfilling event.
Solid start for this event. Fisk is full on unhinged, and always happy to see Luke Cage get the spotlight. I too am thinking the Tony Stark for mayor stuff is smoke and mirrors. While I see how people say it resembles the Registration Act, this one appears to just be straight up outlawing capes. Curious to see how Fisk’s corrruption will take hold. Those last few panels were infuriating in all the right ways. Hope the event continues to shine!
What an exciting start.
I've missed your art Checchetto...
So this is the umpteenth time we've seen "outlaw heroes hunted by legally-empowered villains." It's thoroughly familiar, safe territory.
But this magnificent execution shows why so many concepts and conflicts in superhero comics are evergreen. The wide-ranging action is gorgeously illustrated. The script is perfectly timed, and some of the dialogue (I'm thinking particularly of the Cap/Daredevil talk) stands as tall as any ever written on this premise.
Plus, this is a great all-killer-no-filler continuation of Mr. Zdarsky's volume of Daredevil. All the best plotlines are continued and combined, and all the duds have been cleared away.
Not quite a great comic -- because of the familiarity -- but a very, very more
It's like Civil War, but much better.
Even though it's a rehash of civil war and Charles soule daredevil it's still entertaining. This was also the other event I was extremely hyped for. Let's see how this goes
strong 8
Some redemption following the mediocre end to Zdarsky’s run on Daredevil. Timely advice from Captain America, never give in to tyrants because once you do they’ll take it all.
Good but not great! Daredevil was losing me at the end and this didn't fully bring me back onboard but it was good enough to keep going and hope Zdarsky can bring back the early feel of this series. Checchetto is outstanding as usual and made the book much better especially with those Menyz bright colors!
It was pretty good. It did seem a little unoriginal but, overall I'm willing to give it the benefit of the doubt, and the ending has me hyped.
It's Civil War 3 or Dark Reign 2 whatever you wish to say. Heroes Bad. Hire Villain. It's same just Kingpin va Heroes with DD being Centre figure.
Let's see how it turns out.
Art: 4/5
Story: 3.5/5
Total: 7.5/10
Spoilers.
This was alright, Checcchetto is gorgeous as usual, but Zdarsky’s writing is pretty mid, from corny lines like “You just graduated from trash to official trash” and the stromwyn’s being super boring and over the top. Kingpin Gaining The Powers Of Purple Man, but a lot of this feels meh.
I typically love Chip Zdarsky’s writing but I have found his Daredevil to be just decent and this is no exception. There’s is some great characterization and dialogue in this issue but the plot doesn’t seem very unique. Marco Checchetto brings his A game and I hope he’s a constant throughout the entire event. It’s a breath of fresh air in terms of large scale events but lacked any surprises.
good start. I was impressed.
The new Powers Act is unapologetically similar to the Superhero Registration Act, so I find it a tough pill to swallow. To make matters worse, the Thunderbolts Units seem to be hiding in every shadow ready to pounce on the first Good Samaritan to help out in any dangerous situation. I hope the incident with Luke and Jessica was a setup (that would be the only way to unroll my eyes at that part).
The only glimmer of hope is Tony's plan to run for office against Fisk. I'll take anything that steers away from retreading Civil War's ground at this point.
Yeah, this was very boring and pretty bad. I haven't been the biggest fan of Zdarsky's run but at least he managed here and there to create an entertaining story even if the basis for it was a stupid one. This, right here, is just a lame copy of the Civil War. Say what you want about Millar, at least he was original. Zdarsky just plagiarizes him with a very low-effort comic. Also, some of the lines were very, very stupid. For example, Fisk's line that "nobody else knows your true Achille's heel: your guilt". Lol, EVERYBODY knows Daredevil's weakness is his guilt, it's basically his signature at this point, that was such a dumb line. And of course, the cringiest line is, not at all surprisingly, about cops because Zdarsky really has an obsesmore
