It Happened On Hyde Street (2024): Devour #1

Nov 2, 2024

A very very good horror story, It reminded me of the best stories from the old EC comics I read when I was younger. It would even deserve to be an episode of a series. From the theme to the rising tension, all the way to the climax, everything works perfectly, which is rare in this kind of format.

Local Man (2023) #9

Feb 10, 2024

This comic reminded me of the feeling I had when reading Brubaker's "Sleeper" or Tom King's "Vision": the certainty that I was encountering something special, a sleeper hit that will make me eagerly follow all future works by an author. Tim Seeley and Tony Fleecs, if they play their cards right, have a future classic on their hands.

Space Ghost (2024) #2

Jun 8, 2024

I've never been a fan of Space Ghost. To me, it was a forgettable cartoon with somewhat cheesy heroes. But... Pepose is one of the best writers of his generation. He has successfully avoided the usual pitfalls for this type of series: trying to completely deconstruct the character, leaning into grimdark, or mocking the original material. On the contrary, he respects the source material while taking it seriously and embracing its optimistic and childlike aspects. Once again, I don't have a particular fondness for the original material, but it's clear that when a work is respected, it always yields good results.

It continues to be the best DC comics. The only flaw: the resolution is a bit easy, even contrived. But the writing, the artwork, the optimism, and the energy remain top-notch You can think whatever you want about him, It's still amazing that at his age and after such a long career, Mark Waid remains one of the greatest comic book writers, with a modern and effective writing style.

Aliens vs. Avengers (2024) #2

Nov 7, 2024

Not a fan of Alien Covenant, not a fan of Prometheus retcon, There’s less action and fewer twists than in the first chapter, buuuut… despite all these little flaws, Hickman managed to get me interested in this mythology and totally invested in the story. Once again, impressive.Yes, there are certain recurring themes and obsessions with Hickman (the rise of artificial intelligence, humanity’s resilience in the face of the end of all things), but it doesn’t feel repetitive; we’re still surprised.

Batman: Off-World (2023) #1

Ultimate Black Panther (2024) #1

Feb 10, 2024

I have been frequently disappointed by Black Panther comics (And when I say frequently, it's actually most of the time since the botched ending of Doomwar), and between Ridley, Coates, and Ewing, I've lost count of the number of times I've been misled by a promising first issue that turned out to be a disaster. But... I want to believe; Hill seems to finally be an author who loves Black Panther. Let's see what comes next.

I'm a bit surprised by the reception of this arc: for me, it's been a long time since I've read an Avengers comics this good. Of course, there are flaws. The Ashen Combine isn't developed enough, the action is too scattered... but when you compare it to Jason Aaron's run, it's like night and day.

Mar 21, 2023

Most of the stories were not extraordinary. But these are new writers (for most of them, I think), in full progress. And the Superman story, “We Just Have to Make it to Spring.”, had a profound effect on me. And even though I'm not the biggest Superman fan, Because it's one of the most complicated superheroes to write correctly, when an author understands the character, it always makes for particularly touching, interesting and strong stories. For that one (and one or two other stories) it deserves a high rating.

DC Pride (2021): 2023 #1

Jun 3, 2023

Like all "Queer" anthologies by DC or Marvel, it doesn't deserve such a high score by critics. As usual, some authors are clearly underwhelming, for example, the Midnighter story, one of my favorite hero, was abysmal (and I could never get used to Leah Williams' style) but there are a few stories that are clearly Beautiful, powerful and particularly emotional: Grant Morrison (even if, as usual, I didn't understand everything, and it's cool) Cantwell, a few newcomers... Clearly the best "DC PRIDE" anthology.

Hulk (2021) #8

Aug 17, 2022

It was ok. We were promised an answer about who is stronger between Thor and Hulk, but despite the watcher's promise at the beginning, the answer remains vague (not that it's a problem, the stronger in this kind of story always depends on who the author chooses). My real problem is with the ending as a whole, everything goes too fast, it would have deserved one more installment.

Amazing Spider-Man (2022) #60

Oct 30, 2024

Was it the worst Spider-Man arc? Probably not. Gang War was cool and I like Romita. But it will likely remain the one with the most poor choices, mischaracterizations, and gave us Paul—one of the most hated Marvel characters in recent years, which, in a way, is quite an achievement.

Jenny Sparks (2024) #3

Oct 22, 2024

Not always a big fan of Tom King, but this is the first time I really don’t understand where he’s trying to go. It takes way too long to get started, Jenny Spark's character is far too passive, and the Justice League are walking clichés, complete jerks. It feels like I’m reading a Garth Ennis version, but without the humor. That being said, there are still some good ideas (even though the idea of civilians with a mad god in a restaurant feels a lot like a Sandman story). It's a pity, I love Jenny Spark, one of the best character from The Authority.

Incredible Hulk (2023) #9

Feb 21, 2024

The guest artist for this issue is terrible. How can they pick such a bad artist for such an important character? And the story is starting to feel repetitive; it lacks surprises, and we're beginning to get bored. It's not a disaster yet, but they need to move forward because this run is losing more and more interest.

It had started so well. But for a few issues now, I've been terribly bored; the overall quality, whether in terms of the artwork or the story, has significantly declined, and overall, it feels tedious, as if the story is going in circles. It seems like Philip Kennedy doesn't believe in it anymore.

Hero vs hero fight. What a total lack of originality. Aaron managed to make his Avengers in this issue ineffective, stupid and unbearable at the same time. Quite a feat. Power Girl (2023) #14

Oct 23, 2024

I am a huge fan of Power Girl. To me, she's one of the most underutilized characters in the Super-Family (sadly overshadowed by Supergirl). She’s a more mature and assertive version of Supergirl, who also doesn’t take herself too seriously. The series by Jimmy Palmiotti and Amanda Conner is a real delight and deserves more recognition. This series, however, is written by an author who doesn’t know Power Girl, doesn’t like her defining traits, and has no interest in writing about Power Girl. So, they create their own character, who just carries the name for clout. It's the kind of mediocre series published without anyone really knowing why. (And besides me, for morbid curiosity, people really read it ?)

Loved the Krakoa era, but it's clear that without Hickman, the writers are completely lost. They don't know what to do, beside Ewing, the concept is too big for us. Time to go to a simpler concept, Marvel don't have anymore writers who can write this kind of projects.

There is a whole new generation of authors who know they are mediocre, but who have understood that in the age of social networks and polarized opinions you don't need to be good to sell: you just need to insult readers, pit the most radical ones against each other to get people talking, play the "meta" card, and then all you have to do is take advantage of hate-reading to make your sales. The proof that it works, I read this comic book even though it's probably the worst thing I've read this year.
