What a fun issue! Great characterization and dialogue between Clark and Lois. Little moments like Perry's 'diagnosis' and Supe's counseling the accosted reporter show what makes him 'him' when he's not fighting bad guys.Plus "super sex." Twice!

Bendis is lazy and inconsistent here. If, as noted on the first page, Earth being inside the Phantom Zone caused such world-wide havoc and destruction, why is Clark focusing his energy on a gang of local criminals? Why isn't he straightening up the world - or at least Metropolis - which looks like it didn't lose a single hair on its chinny, chin chin? And secondly, WHY does every "secret villain" turn out to be a cast member? You'd think with millions of people in Metropolis, or New York, or wherever fine "secret villains'" identities are revealed, that the odds would be overwhelmingly that it's someone we've never seen or heard of before! In this instance, with such a small cast of characters, the only shocker would have been if the Red Cloud turned out to be Perry White!

Indistinguishable members of the "House of Kent" - and why were they even needed? Horrible overuse of Phantom Zone in Bendis' entire run. Every threat can just be relegated there, it seems. Incoherent storyline regarding Lois and big dud of an ending to Leone/Red Cloud (one of the worst villains ever) storyline. Just awful.

This comic would've been Wayyyy better if the Big Development wasn't announced weeks in advance, and we were actually Shocked by the change in status. Alas those days are past and anticipation isn't What will happen, but only How will it occur. An unfortunate development. Now the review. SPOILERS FOLLOW: Horrible, awful art. Supe's identity comeback was basically a rip-off of Daredevil's. The only interesting part was Luthor's motivation, although technically this isn't the Kal-El he grew up with. Since Supes already had almost limitless power, his enhancement doesn't mean much. will he vanquish foes more easily? that would make bad comics, so not likely. All in all, a big let-down

So Metropolis needs Seven versions of Superman, now? Tnew can't patrol the reat of the worlvd? they can get anywhere in 10 minutes. its boring, frankly. also in Lois' telling , the great winds Supes causes when he's fling at super- speed saves lives. I posit that it also causes commuters to fall onto the tracks, cause traffic accidents, etc.How about that?

I was hoping the kids would go away. First of all, how do Clark and Lois suddenly have kids, coinciding with Supes having kids? Also there are about 10 beings with the powers of Supes all guarding Metropolis? Silly. And it was good that Supes got married and had a young (!) son, but this is way too much and leads to a lot of pages filled with filler.

Something is definitely amiss. Months ago Dr. Strange bursts into Mephisto's lair and asks "What have you done to Peter Parker?" Now, months later, he's concerned with Harry Osborn's clone? PP produced a wedding ring months ago. What happened with that? MJ starts to admit something to Peter, it's interrupted and never referred to again. Norman Osborn sells his son's soul to the devil and then cries - over his clone! - that he was always "enough" for him. WTF? For years there was one Kindred, and now suddenly there are two. Don't even get me started on trying to figure out who created Kindred or what all those "sins" were about - or why Kindred was so obsessed with them. Sooo many red herrings and months of build-up that went nowhere.

Totally ludicrous premise. Even for a comic book. Patients don't check in at the front desk? They don't provide insurance info? When there's a change of shifts, the other doctors don't notice? Loved ones don't complain to anyone except the orderly? He seems to have a voracious appetite, so you'd think someone would notice something. Totally dumb - again, even for a comic.

Stupid story, cartoonish art, nothing ever feels real or at stake. This comic is going in the wrong direction! Any interest/ramifications from "the big event six months ago" is neutered by Peter acting normally and suffering no obvious harm other than his status with MJ. By now, who cares what that event was? Ditto with MJ and her new family - which has to be either a big retcon or an alternate universe version of her. As to this issue: falling from miles in the air and landing without any impact, webbing notwithstanding? Didn't Gwen die from the impact of being snatched out of the air from a much shorter distance? And steering the Vulture directly into Osborn's office from all of NYC? And putting on a new suit and miraculously recovering from his bruised/broken ribs? And all supervillains in this series joking/speaking in the same voice? BAD.

In comics never say "never" but it sure looks like - with the kids - that Peter and MJ have reached a point of no return. Think of this run as the "anti-Nick Spencer." There are many, many things wrong with this run, but certainly one of them is that Paul is such a cypher and not in the least appealing. it reflects really poorly on MJ choosing him.

What a mess! After 26 issues, endless waiting and hype to the nth degree, the Big Payoff is the death (temporary) of an ancillary character readers are not invested in. So - What Did Peter Do? - Nothing. He didn't cause that explosion. And we learned that a long time ago anyway. Why was MJ so angry at him in the early issues? Who knows? He only came back to save her butt. What about Paul? He's still a cipher, and with the "imaginary" kids gone, he and MJ's relationship doesn't have much to keep it going. And as much as Peter is pissed and angry about MJ, he's off and running on his own with Felicia. Boring, incredibly confusing villain and scheme. Took wayyyyyyy too long to resolve and then, really didn't.

Batman gets the ^%$% beaten out of him 2 issues ago (a day or two ago in 'real' time) comes back completely healed (?) and has no other 'strategy' than to get the ^%$% beaten out of him again? Isn't he a detective? Doesn't he have weapons besides his fists and, apparently, forehead)? Can't he concoct an antidote to Venom or something besides hoping for the head-butt to end all head-butts (and which doesn't hurt Batman as much as Bane?) As the pages turned, I kept waiting for some master strategy or...something. Ridiculous conclusion to a 5 issue buid-up.

Boy, am I tired of reading "epic" comic-book stories that crumble from lack of internal logic. SPOILER ALERTS: So now we're supposed to believe that Bane somehow masterminded this entire event since...when? Causing Batman to propose? Having Selina accept, knowing she and Joker would have a near-death colloquy in which he'd plant the idea in her head that Batman can't be happy, that would make her change her mind? Was that Bane's idea, or Joker's? Was Joker following Bane's instructions then? (Not bloody likely). How could all these criminals, who Batman has put away, assemble together without The World's Greatest Detective having a clue? All my "points" are awarded for the art.

I'm confused. If Batman gets married, he's no longer a good Batman because he's "happy." Now he's not a good Batman because he's "sad." What Batman clearly needs is Meds! As for this issue, it "sounds" good, but really, makes no sense. Superman is god-like, not Batman. Batman is a vigilante who beats the snot out of people and is a polarizing figure, in "real" life. Plus, what kind of sense does it make for a whiny Bruce Wayne to lament (in vague terms) that when his heart was broken, he turned to Batman to fix it? Batman doesn't do Romance! And geez - "Playboy" Bruce Wayne, you're the first person who ever got dumped?? It comes off pathetic. And finally, what does any of this have to do with the EVIDENCE, which was still pretty over-whelming, if "baked."

Why does Batman always go to these remote, inhospitable environs the hardest way - on horseback, trudging through icefields? Whats the point? Plus, what exactly was batmans plsn? He couldnt have carried Beast back to civilization, so either he was going to give hjim a bloody nose and leave him there - highly unsatisfying - or kill him. He was never going to bring him in by the book. So thst makes this premeditated murder.

Wait. I thought Catwoman standing Bruce up "broke" him? Now he says his brokenness was part of a master plan? So that means he proposed, knew he would get stood up, and even knowing that, let it "break" him? HUH??? Also, the "epiphany" Batman had about needing others to help him? The guy is in more groups (JLA, Outsiders) than anybody else, and he's been relying on his support family - only some of which are are shown in the splash page - for years. So that doesn't make any sense, either. Then, of course, that entire support family just lingers on the sidelines while Flashpoint Batman has a gun cocked at Robin's head. What? Betting that this maniac wouldn't shoot? Not a safe bet, in my opinion. So yes. This sucked.

This story makes zero sense. Batman designs a machine that can beat him if he turns bad, so he creates a machine that can kill the entire Justice League? Because Batman "always has a plan" so he knows that they will come to save him. And not only does the machine almost kill the rest of the League, but then it goes rogue, gets a mind of its own, and takes over all of Gotham City. in the ensuing two weeks, where is the Justice League? They just thought, "Ah, Batman's not in danger anymore. Screw Gotham?" And by the way, where Is Batman?" Well, they don't know, but we know that a critically injured Batman was able to zoom through the air from a great altitude at tremendous speed to land underrwater, at precisely in the vast ocean where Aquaman happns to be. Batman planned for this, too? What a genius! So, in short: Mr."Always Has a Paln" designs a killer machine that is a mortal, and far greater danger to Earth and the JLA, than Batman himself going bad, and also designed, apparently as a back-up, an inhuman police state that would subjugate all of Gotham, the city Bats is sworn to protect. This whole arc is preposterous. So Failsafe anticipates every move Batman makes, until he doesn't. Whaaa? But more than that, Batman has wayyyyyyy too high an opinion of himself. To take himself down (via Failsafe) for killing one person, he's built something capable of almost killing Superman, imprisoning Robin and friends, destroying Gotham, and incapacitating the rest of the JLA. Some folks in Gotham have undoubtedly died from Failsafe's actions. And Batman is going to get a 'pass' on this when it's all over? "Hey, sorry, my bad," and all is forgiven? Dumb dumb dumb.

And aside from the ridiculous reentry, Batman calculates where the Fortress of Solitude is while the Earth is rotating. Asinine. More: Superman has a pressure point? So, Bruce is in a city, not to mention a universe he's never been, and in 5 minutes he decides that this Gotham needs a Batman. Why? Is Batman's Gotham such a paradise? A few days ago, because of Failsafe, ergo Bruce, Gotham was an occupied fortress. It's been destroyed and subject to supervillain takeovers more times than you can count. And that's a Gotham WITH a Batman. Not to mention, Batman's whole reason for being is that his parents were killed in HIS world. He has no business being the Caped Crusader in a world where he doesn't belong.

I've been a huge fan of Chip's run, but this issue...I dunno. Matt's whole retirement from DD is predicated on not causing more death, so he breaks into the governor's home with... Elektra? Elektra? Seriously? A ninja assassin who immediately sticks an enormous sword at the governor's throat? What could go wrong? Aside from the fact that breaking into the governor's home, for whatever reason, is so totally wrong and illegal. This is how DD is "back?" Plus, now that he has this information, what's he supposed to do with it? "Mr. Murdoch, what's your proof the governor is owned by a crime family?" "Uh, I broke into his house and he told me." Other points: Since when is Elektra so "nice" - being interested in seeing justice done, as opposed to being a work-for-hire? She sounds more like Catwoman than herself. And the governor's confession - sounds like '70's Denny O'Neill - way too "on the nose" and easily extracted. Still a fan, but after so much soul-searching, Matt's gotta come up with a better redemption than this...

My main problem with this issue is the central thesis that prisons are designed to help the imprisoned. That may be laudable (if oft-underfunded and ignored) side benefit, the main rationale is to Protect Society from the incarcerated. As well as to punish those for their crimes, and act as a deterrent and warning to those tempted to commit crimes. Matt's initial instinct - that he's not above the law and should suffer the consequences of his actions - is correct.

I don't know. A lot of things seem to have gotten changed/dropped. What happened to Matt determined to spend his 2 years in prison and not wanting any special treatment? No "finale" with Cole? What about Elektra/Daredevil "one must die" if The Hand is to be defeated? How was DD really changed? "Do what's right?" What does that mean, exactly? That sounds like the kind of vigilante stuff that got him in trouble in the first place. And Fisk "being happy?" That's a solution? Judging from the upcoming Devil's Reign it sounds like a pretty piss-poor plan. So, I don't know. Zdarsky took DD pretty low - he killed a guy in the first issue (?) and went downhill from there, and then - Presto! - he's back.

I dunno. I think DD's gone over the deep end. "Everybody's looking for us" Elektra tells Matt, and the next thing he does is take his group of on the lam supervillains out in public to stop a landlord from evicting tenants? And beating up law enforcement? And then it all turns out to be unnecessary because Matt Murdock got a court order stopping the eviction anyway. (When? How? Matt hasn't been lawyering for a long time). Apparently DD's idea of 'rehabilitation' is getting the villains to break laws HE doesn't believe in. Zdarsky is a good writer, but he continues to do things that are inexplicable. DD cuts out his eyes in front of the Stromwyns, who don't know that DD has radar sense, so why would they make a deal with a powerless blind man? DD enters the meeting declaring he's not there for revenge, but then takes (illegal) actions that show he definitely was. As far as I know, the world still believes the world leaders, including POTUS, were asssasinated. So are they REALLY just going to spring Elektra from the clink and expunge her record? Is the public not going to demand action? Besides,is it even remotely plausible that the STromwyns can make ONE phone call and supervillains get a "Get out of jail free" card? So many implausible events.

Not to mention that several dead and buried friends of Matt suddenly reappear on Earth, bodies intact, just taking a marked path back to the land of the living. This is a review of the entire 14 issue run. Zdarsky sets up great "painting DD in a corner" situations, and then gets him out by walking all over the paint. So, the whole time he thought he was on a mission from God, learned that he was duped, but still convinced himself he was fighting for God in Hell and now is a priest? Nah. The world's leaders were all presumed dead or kidnapped and suddenly they reappear, no questions asked, nobody held responsible? DD breaks dangerous criminals out of prison, and that's ok? Elektra and all the criminals are "exonerated and released" on one phone call? DD assaults the most powerful crime family and they go all soft and cave, even though he's now a helpless blind guy because he gouged out his eyes in front of them? Plus, when he gets to Hell, it's a very empty place and he immediately finds Foggy, who is in a prison cell? (What, Hell isn't bad enough, you need to be incarcerated, also?) And on and on and on. And despite all the chaos he caused these past months, Mr. Fantastic and Spider-Man and all the rest say "all is forgiven?" And all the "lessons" he keeps learning, including in this issue, are immediately undone when - lo and behold - a criminal menace suddenly appears! (Who could have seen that coming?)

"Somehow" Matt, with no memory, no training, no ID, becomes a priest, working in a place that calls for close contact with children, no less. That's some screening process! "Somehow" MM doesn't question who he was before six months ago, isn't plagued by his total lack of memory, isn't curious as to whether he has friends, family, et. "Somehow" this made it through all the editors and onto the newsstands. Art was very pedestrian.

So after going to prison for killing someone, freeing super-villains from prison, being ordered by Spider-Man and others to hang up his billy club, and presumably going through a cleansing of the spirit, what has Daredevil learned? To put on the mask when he wasts to "hurt" somebody. So, nothing, basically. And now that his memory's back, no visit to Foggy? Anyway story was way too mainstream with pedestrian art. DD has lost its edgyness.

I am REALLY tired - not to mention offended - reading another issue or "Father Matt, Exorcist Priest." Trading in his billy club for a crucifix? Going all in on Catholic gobbledygook? And the bad guys are clones sponsored by the government? Wtf? 3 poi ts for the art. Minus one for the story.

I have been reading DD since Frank Miller first introduced the Kingpin as Matt's main antagonist back in issue #170, but I am now "crossing" (pun intended) this book off my list. It has officially jumped the shark. All this religious claptrap - the Seven Deadly Sins? Gluttony? Seriously? 2/3 of Americans are overweight or obese, and Gluttony comes for She-Hulk and Matt, somehow suddenly elevated for no reason whatsoever as God's appointed defender on Eart quotes scripture to ward it off? Jesus Christ Almighty, does this book suck now.

still no Foggy. the storyline such as it is, is asinine with "instant priest" Matt apparently annointed to do God's dirty work on Earth, even though in the previous storyline he was completely duped by the Beast. still no hint of how he came back to Life, what parts of his memory are gone. Just a boring mess.

Devil's Reign (2021) #6

Apr 6, 2022

SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS: It was a good issue, but... 1) There was the old trope of the hero about to kill the bad guy and being talked out of it by a cohort. 2) If charges against Fisk weren't dropped, how did he leave the country so easily? 3) He must be extremely confused about killing Matt Murdock and having Daredevil show up. And now he just forgets about it and gives up on getting vengeance? 4) Daredevil spent a considerable portion of his latest run in prison for killing someone. Supposedly he learned to be a "better" Daredevil, but this last issue undoes any progress he may have made in this regard, and his teaming with Elektra to "save the world" seems to indicate he will be more reckless and extra-legal than ever: 5) No tears shed for Mike? No goodbye - or explanation - to Foggy? 6) This is now at least the third time that Fisk has "retired" and gone abroad to find peace. He'll be back!

Fantastic Four (2018) #9

The whole premise of this arc was silly. Doom saps Galactus' power to power Latveria? Seriously? And Doom is going to give the stolen power cosmic to someone other than himself? The characterizations were pretty good, but that was about it. Also, am I mistaken, or didn't Kirby or someone else establish that Doom's face only had the mildest of scars and it was his own warped ego that made him think he was horribly disfigured?

Fantastic Four (2018) #13

Aug 14, 2019

the problem with so many stories is that the set-ups are so much better than the pay-offs, and this is one of those. Last issue was really powerful, and left our "heroes" in a dire situation. This one provided too simple resolutions, a totally unrealistic ending to the fight, and a "reverberation" back to the Puppet Master that doesn't even make any sense. Plus, the fight scenes weren't particularly compelling, either.

Not a fair fight. Wouldn't a gamma-ray pumped up Thor have the ADDED strength that Banner received when he became Hulk? In other words, Thor's strength PLUS Hulk's? In the last four issues there was virtually no "regular" Thor V. Hulk throwdown. Wild, but weak.

Minor spoilers: Clark's big 'Flying Man' story didn't work for me, because 1) did no one wonder How and IF Clark interviewed him? Wheres proof? Did he take a photo? No? Why not? And one paragraph of Supes explaining himself WITHOUT Clark asking where he's from, how he got his powers, etc., does NOzt a great reporter make. Also, when Clark destroyed those missile in his street clothes, why didn't The Flying Man' transform into The Naked Man?

Nightwing (2016) #78

Mar 18, 2021

This is my first Nightwing comic, as, from the reviews, I was expecting something game-changing along the lines of "The Anatomy Lesson" from Swamp Thing #21. Instead I got another comic where the hero becomes a millionaire (why?), comes out against bullying (controversial!), and gets a new Bathound origin story. I'm sure I missed something significant, but that's my 2 cents.

Superman (2018) #18

Dec 12, 2019

Perry's reaction in 2015, when he slapped Clark, was more on the mark: Clark destroyed his - and Lois'- credibility as reporters. Any Superman stories they wrote are totally compromised. Lois will lose her Pulitzer. The Daily Planet loses its integrity. Lois is now "Mrs. Superman" which cant make her happy. The Planet's employees, Clark's neighbors, and the entire town of Smallville now are endangered and/or have their lives thrown into turmoil. Very selfish decision by Superman, although it will be interesting to watch. Smaller point- if this was a 'mystery press conference' called by the Daily Planet, as the first pages imply, there would have been 4 people outside waiting, instead of throngs.

Superman just looks like a big lug this issue. Bendis is in full "Bendis speak" mode, with all characters, including Dr.Fate and John Constantine, speaking in little, totally out of character "rejoinders" and witticisms. Bendis obviously thinks all the confusion about Jon and Jor-El reads like an Abbott and Costello routine, but it's just tiresome and takes up a lot of space. Nothing to see here, folks.

Let's dispense with the art, which is cartoonish and awful. Three things I hated/made no sense: 1) When Supes tells his son "You're better at this than I ev-" Based on WHAT??? Modesty notwithstanding, Jon hasn't been around long enough to prove himself At All. 2) Jon telling his father he doesn't have long to live (and can't change it). Really? Is that something to tell your father - especially if fate can't be changed? 3) Since Jon lived way in the future, he also knows when HE will die, and how history will regard him. Why does looking into the past stop with 2021?

Just kind of dull. Now that "the return" is over, whatever happened to the foreshadowing before Supes went to WarWorld when Jon told him that from this point on, he's never mentioned again in history books. It's never been mentioned again, far as I know. Also, don't the Kents have neighbors? No comes around to see the whole JLA build a house?

Superman: The Last Days of Lex Luthor (2023) #1

Jul 25, 2023

Very well done, excellent characterization of Lex. Also, great art. My main problem - not a small one - is buying the premise. Lex got himself into this situation while trying to concoct a new way to kill Supes, and he put hundreds of thousands of lives in danger to get his attention. Even though no one died (unlikely) he caused massive property damage that will destroy countless lives. And Supes agrees to help him just because he "asked?" What about the thousands of bedridden children in hospitals who have terminal illnesses but don't have the ability to reach Supes by causing massive destruction? He can't prioritize? Or - here's an idea. How about turning Luther over the local authorities to arrest him for the damage he caused, while he goes looking for a cure. At the very LEAST, Supes could've extracted some vows from Luther to reform his ways, work on cures to help others, etc, ect, before agreeing to come to his rescue. There's a hint at the end that Clark feels guilty for "turning" Luther evil, but that's not enough justification, in my book.

Superman: Up In the Sky #6

Nov 4, 2021

I'm reviewing the series as a whole. I rank it with "Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow" as one of the best Superman stories ever. It unwinds sort of like the 12 challenges of Hercules (or whatever that's called.) Each issue revealed a different facet of Superman: His compassion, that every life matters, his indomitable will, his moral code, the two sides - the "super" and the "man" needing each other, his bravery and morality when stripped of his memory, and his basic decency. Each issue encapsulated one aspect of him in original ways. The ending brought a lump to my throat. Bravo.

The Death of Superman 30th Anniversary Special #1

it was ok, but ludicrous things ruined the DoomBreaker story for me. (SPOILER ALERT) Like, DBs human identity is ascertained because a guy in the crowd says DB's voice "sounds like" the guy they know. First of all, his physiology has COMPLETELY changed. His voice is not going to sound anything like what it did before. And between the chaos and the incredible noise the fight produces, that's the first thing that pops into your mind when DB utters 3 words? That your friend turned into a monstrous killing machine? And also, in the middle of the battle, Clark Kent makes a rather odd appearance to comfort Jon. Apparently DB got fooled by the glasses.

Why would he attempt to blow up Earth to rid the universe of Kryptonians when, ironically, it would kill everyone EXCEPT the super-powered Kryptonians?
