I can honestly say that I have been so excited waiting for this story and now that I have finally had a chance to read it, I am even ore excited to move forward with the story as well as the tie ins. I knew this story was going to be incredible, but I was not prepared for it to blow my mind the way it did. Being a lifelong metalhead and Batman fan, this has a special place in my heart where it will permanently remain. I can't express to you guys enough how excited I am for this to have more issues. Overall: Death Metal #1 is a brilliant start to DC's newest big event. Scott Snyder comes out swinging as he delivers an issue that offers the reader everything they would want in the debut issue of a big event. On the surface, this book is fine. It's a fun read and promises a great adventure through the upcoming issues. However, when I start paying attention to some of the technical details, I do end up asking questions that I struggle to find answers to. Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo kick off their Death Metal event with an issue that may be confusing to some, but after reading it, I am intrigued to find out more.  Things do line up with everything that Snyder had given fans up to this point, so those jumping in here for the first time may struggle more than others.  While it does come off as overly dark at first glance, there is a sense of hope running underneath that I hope surfaces more and more as we progress. This is the start of the sequence of Dark Knights: Metal, one of my favorite Comic Book Events, and this first issue is AWESOME, comics like this one, with all this craziness and a perfect writing style that remember a metal song.

This is an extremely enjoyable read. Just lots of fun.

I love the new designs of the Trinity. Hell, everyone really.

It reminds me a lot of Hickman's Secret Wars with the new DCU. And I love it.

Capullo's art is amazingly great.

It All Matters. From Doomsday Clock to Flash Forward, everything matters.

The death. I am so happy it happened and interested where this story goes.

Very intrigued with the ending. Looks like we'll be tying into Last Knight on Earth and Snyder's Batman run.

Nothing.

An absolutely metal start to Dark Knights: Death Metal. It's crazy, it's fun, everything matters, I am so on board for this. more

Amazing worldbuilding and great start to a new series

Greg Capullo is an amazing artist.

The art is great and the story promises something big.

Great first issue in my humble opinion..

Rock solid beginning. Lots of questions but what we have here is great stuff. Characterization is good. Some great moments. Awesome artwork. I cant wait to see where this goes.

I know some may not really be too big on this one, but damn I loved it, just like with the original Metal book. Snyder and Capullo are both going all-in crazy here, with this reading almost as if it's a fan fiction, though it's more of a Secret Wars (the latest one, not the original) type of story.

Death Metal #1 is an awesome first issue. Surprisingly, this issue is unlike many of Snyder's first issues in that there is not as much exposition as usual, which is a welcome addition. Instead, the issue features glimpses into a world that is largely conquered by Perpetua and her stooge the Batman Who Laughs. The premise for this event is interesting, and the stakes seem to be high. The issue features some awesome moments for different characters like Batman and Wonder Woman. Also, it is always nice to see Swamp Thing get some love in an event. Additionally, there were some new batmen characters featured in this comic book, and for that reason alone this book is worth getting. This issue sets up what looks to be an exciting event going forward with lots of action. This is one I enjoyed and I am looking forward to more. 9/10. more

I'm not fan of Dark Night Metal story arc but this new arc had a very interesting start. I like the first issue. I wonder what will happen the next issue

You know what great books have in common? They make you not just surprised and shocked, but also thinking. Thinking about what the hell you've just read, where it came from and where it leads, what does all the symbolism mean and what it foreshadows. Dark Nights Metal surely was a story like that, and hence it's anything but suprising nor shocking it received a sequel. One that's twisted even more than its predecessor.

The comic hits you hard in the head from the very beginning. In a way that's exactly what you'd expect from something having "Death Metal" in its name, eh? And similarly to how an inexperienced listener will be overwhelmed with a wall of guitars frantically playing 16th notes, blast beats and growling all combining into a brutal death metal song, I think inexperienced reader will be overwhelmed with amount of content in this book. There's so many little things one should know before picking it up, even detailed explanation one of the characters provides doesn't really mean much, because ultimately to understand why he's even there, looking the way he does, you should be familiar with limited series released last year, being a sequel to two other limited series, with one of them being a total trainwreck I wouldn't recomment even to my worst enemy.
Sure, I could imagine a new reader could pick this book up and have fun with it, but knowing the background really helps, even if some of it we'd rather forget and see blatantly retconned.

The first issue of Death Metal is something entirely different. An ambitious, exhausting read leaving you with tons of questions you can't wait to see answered. It leaves you stunned, thinking about what caused this event, and where it'll take DC's universe.
I'm telling you, it's something special you have to experience on your own. Buy it. more

Good start. As always, Snyder knows how to rope you in and start an event very well. He sets up the main players, the conflicts, and the story all very well. My major gripe is that this feels like it has come out of left field. When the original Dark Nights Metal happened, that had setups to it in prelude issues and other Snyder Batman stories, but this kind of feels random. It feels like it is picking up from the Justice League run, but it's very unclear where this is taking place in continuity. Did that detract from my enjoyment of the book that much? No. I love the universe that Snyder has built here, already post apocalyptic. I hope that he can expand on how it came to be or other aspects of it. I also like the story (spoilers, please for the love of god tell me he finally killed the BWL). The art is actually not on par with Capullo's best Batman work, it seems very rushed, and that makes sense given the current DC landscape and what has been going on behind the scenes at DC. I hope the quarantine has given Capullo and the art team to improve the future issues. I'll still read this series and recommend it after the first issue. more

Finally got around to reading this book. And what can I say, its just pure fun. Albeit, cosmic-level complicated multiversal stakes fun, but still fun. Snyder and Capullo returns with their sequel Death Metal to wrap up over 3 years of continuity story-telling and even hints to the DC's future moving forward.

First, Metal! Snyder must really like Metal music to base his gigantic continuity spanning over a dozen books on a Slender Man Batman who looked like he came out of a hardcore goth/metal concert.

I was never really into Snyder's take on the DC continuity, or DC continuity in general, but as this was probably the biggest event of the year for comics, I might as well give it a crack. Its probably best to at least read the orignial DNM before reading this though.The covers, hot damn. Foil chromium cover, thats nice. Shines like the moon.

Capullo's art, like always, awesome. His pencils may as well be the definitive style of DC characters of the past decade, especially his Batman. Though I am really loving how he draws Wonder Woman, especially since she is the protagonist in this. Color as you can see from the cover pop like the sun, its amazing.

On to the story, well its very convoluted, which was expected. Again, its best to read at least the original DNM, but it ties in all of other books the lead up to this series from Flash Forward to Justice League, and even past events in DC history such as Blackest Night and COIE. Many characters show up in this first issue, of course we have Batman and WW. The infamous Batman Who Laughs, Wally West, and even some suprise guests like Lobo and Sgt. Rock. Don't be worried that the story is confusing or even messy at times, this stuff just happens.

The story is hard to explain as it is complex and the scope is wide, but to say one thing, its alot of fun. You will not understand everything, either because of continuity or was intentional, but you will still get a kick out of this book. From art to colors to writing, this is almost certain to be one of the hottest books this year. Also stellar ending! more

I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. Its out there and a little cheesy but I think it works.

I was not a fan of the original Metal, nor Snyder's Justice League, so I was expecting a clusterfuck of a bad comic. I was half right. It is for all intents and purposes a clusterfuck, but Snyder pulled a Hickman and this is just Secret Wars (2015). I mean, BWL has taken over the DCU like Doctor Doom did. Remade it all in his image. The only difference is that Doom was God King, and BWL is a bitch. But what this means is that this new setting, no matter how much is pulled from before like Manhattan Wally and Burnt Swamp Thimg, allows for a fresh start. And while we do get a smattering of Snyder's typical tropes, we've literally and metaphorically have had a break from it for quite some time. What does this mean? It means despite everything that I thought before reading this and even as I was reading it, I didn't have a bad time here. And while I don't have a ton of hope for where the story is going next (Manhattan Bruce, really?), I'm not quite so jaded now. The art started getting to Romita Jr. levels at some point, so I hope Capullo didn't rush through this. His art just isn't nearly as good here as I've seen elsewhere. We'll see though. We'll ALL see. more

I thought Doomsday Clock was the most ambitious book I've ever read; I was wrong.

The book opens en media res, where Prime Earth has been ravaged to the point that its a literal Bat-Supercontinent. The last that we saw of Snyderverse shenanigans was Hell Arisen: Lex getting cucked by Monitor Sugar-Mommy and Plot Armor who Laughs, who revealed the extent of the JL's escape through the Quintessence's "door". All we know is that the League (no Kendra or J'onn but Hal instead?) recreate the DCU Rebirth one shot cover and then get vaporized by what looks like Perpetua's granny hand doom magic.

We have Sergeant Rock talking about poop, Bat-tourettes-rex, and a myriad of Bat-analogues that hurt my brain. I mean come on Snyder, Baphomet is a goat devil, not a cthulu squid dragon!

BWL holds a summit after Perpetua sends Earth 22 to "kingdom come" (get it?), and our lovely Batman pulls up and resurrects and army of revolutionary bat soldiers. This pissed me off because Snyder clearly doesn't know how Black Lantern Rings work, but I guess it doesn't matter since Lobo in the next page to distract you from realizing that (and no dreads either).

And then fucking Wally West, literal Ultimate Speedster Manhattan Mobius Chair West, gets captured by discount Mouth of Sauron Who Laughs! They better explain this somehow. The Wall-man reveals that Perpetua is the big multiversal baddie who is the reason behind very single crisis level villain in DCU history, using her influence to cause crises as a means to escape from her Source Wall lockup. This sucks on a myriad of levels, because apparently now our beloved boys True Darkseid, Dark Monitor Mandrakk, and Prime-Time are officially a bunch of simps for Perpetua. What's next, is the freaking Empty Hand subscribed to her OnlyFans too?

Snyder's OC's can literally suck it. I hate Perpetua and I HATE the Batman Who Laughs.

However, besides the griping, I cannot deny that this book was entertaining as hell and I will definitely be buying the rest of the series and the tie-ins too. The epitome of so ridiculous that its good. Snyder clearly loves DC and what he's put together appeals to me 100%. The Trinity Crisis one-shot will be my saving grace.

Look I mean I didn’t hate it. I actually really appreciated Wally’s exposition dump because this huge event has been eternal and I didn’t know what was happening anymore. On the other hand... I’m exhausted and I don’t care about alternate realities or time travel or quirky new versions of Batman. I am tired. Fix your universe or don’t, DC, but please do it quickly.

If you read everything it is pretty funny because it seems fixing the universe was Geoff's idea, then Dan ruined it because he is competitive with Geoff over Rebirth topping New 52. So Doomsday Clock was supposed to be the final patchwork... and the evidence is still there. Seems like it is leading directly into this (haven't read it yet.) and now Dan's original 5G (aka New 52-2 plans) are shutdown after Dan got his ass thrown out. Like someone else said... Snyder is the winner.

T started reading this after revisiting Metal and that is a mistake. I haven't finished Doomsday Clock nor have I read Snyder's JL so I'm very out-of-loop. And Wally's explanation just doesn't do this for me.

But this just isn't as good beginning as Metal was. Metal started as a slow mystery that was the culmination of Snyder's Batman run. Dark Days: The Forge and The Casting were excellent prequels And it worked. Metal doesn't necessarily require you to read Snyder's Batman run, as it works without it.

This however, doesn't work without reading previous issues. And that bothers me.

Many have compared this to Hickman's Secret Wars saga, which I loved. And yes, there are similarities here. But Doom was so much better than BWL. And Doom did what he did to save reality, BWL is just pure evil and I'm starting to get sick of him. He is a nice idea and he worked so well in Metal, but then DC just continued using him in BWl Vol 2, Infected, Year of the Villain and now this. They overuse him so much and it's getting annoying.

If I were to compare this to Secret Wars, this feels like the second issue. Whereas the "final fight" and all that happened was in the first issue, this starts with the new world immediately and it gets confusing.

Capullo's art is amazing and water is wet.

Overall, maybe I'll enjoy this more after finishing Doomsday Clock and Snyder's JL run, but I'm left with a small disappointment right now. more

After the great buildup of the The Year Of Villain arc this one feels like a Muddled up confusing a lot bizarre ride. Sad to say, could not cope up with this one

Like the previous Dark Nights: Metal, this is another over-indulgent, convoluted mess. I'm not really sure what else to say about it, I pretty much checked out after Wally's exposition dump. DC has done the multiverse stuff to death and these abstract, nonsensical energy sources aren't a plot device I can get behind.

Capullo's art is awesome, as always. He draws a good T-Rex.

Great art. Worthless story.

The apparent culmination of the Game of Thrones-style struggle for DC continuity supremacy is here, and I worry that the least potent of the mix won out.

Tom King fell by the wayside, his Heroes in Crisis devolving into a critical disaster. His Batman couldn't recover from the post-Catwoman non-wedding storylines. Now, his Strange Adventures and his forthcoming Bat/Cat miniseries have been shuffled off to Black Label.

Brian Bendis came on strong ("Bendis is here!"), but his Super-books are losing circulation and his Wonder Comics line isn't taking off. He's now talking on podcasts about winding down on Superman and getting excited about Checkmate.

Dan DiDio was fired.

So who won? Scott Snyder, apparently. He now has free reign to trash the proposed "5G"/"Generations" event with its rethinking of DC continuity in a linear, historical perspective and replace it with the apparent capstone to his Dark Knights: Metal/Justice League run...the one that so many fans felt was a hot mess of baffling multiversal conflict where his heroes keep screwing up, making mistakes and losing. Where the once-almighty Monitor now has an even more-almighty mother in Perpetua and siblings (!) in the Anti-Monitor and World Forger. Because DC doesn't have enough bloat at the top of the multiversal pyramid.

But that's the backstory.

Death Metal #1 is a simple story - a silly story, perhaps a dumb story - but a simple one nonetheless all dressed up with "rock and roll!" dressing. Perpetua has awarded the Batman Who Laughs the Mr. Earth pageant sash and crown, beating out Luthor. (As I said, silly and perhaps dumb...but it is what it is.) But Perpetua doesn't really care about the Earth, she just wants to destroy stuff. So BWL sets up a hell on earth environment that has not been seen anywhere in recent continuity, providing a jarring transition from "same old, same old DC" to "Holy crap, it's a pop-up Hellscape!"

At this point, the story gets really small. Superman is off-page (of course he is, because he's so powerful that this story wouldn't get to happen otherwise), and Batman and Wonder Woman conspire how to fight back when BWL has them pinned down in a life of misery. It's a life that is nowhere reflected in any other DC book, but I digress.

Wally West, who unfortunately has the Watchmen's Doctor Manhattan juju wrapped up in him to become all seeing/knowing/powerful but is a pitiful prisoner in this title, shows up. He suggests a way for the superheroes to win, trying to explain the multiversal mess that is DC in a couple of pages. After having has character shellacked by Tom King in "Heroes in Crisis," Snyder gets to revive West's statue as a beacon of hope. Hero revolt slowly ensues. End issue 1. Seriously, that's it.

This was not a good story. This does not appear to be a good title. But it IS DC's tentpole title for 2020, so DC readers have to get it simply to understand what is going on in their shared universe. For that, I'm more than a little bitter. If you want to see what a GOOD event book is like for comparison's sake, go read Wolfman's "Crisis on Infinite Earths" #1. You'll see how far things have fallen.

Technically, DC's maddening decision to force BWL's word balloons to be red chicken-scratch against a black background continues. BWL's lettering is largely illegible as a result. That's right, it's nearly impossible to read what the lead baddie of this book is saying.

The sole high point of the book is Greg Capullo. He is a very talented artist, and his renditions of fire, brimstone, madness and everything else "rock and roll" are on point -- given the subject matter he has to work with. His characters look solid, his layouts are vibrant and exciting.

Scott Snyder, on the other hand, baffles me. He IS a decent writer, something I continually have to remind myself throughout this book. His Batman "Court of Owls" story is quite good. His "Undiscovered Country," co-written with Charles Soule for Image, is pretty good, too. His JL, however, was convoluted and a chore to read. That carries forward to this book. Perhaps he's just out of his league on stories of this nature. Very few writers can pull off a blockbuster event. He can't. Well, he hasn't so far. Sadly, I apparently will have to keep reading to find out.

Snyder won the Game of Thrones at DC. It's his universe to mold, to make everything count. And, with his first move as the prima dona of DC, he's fallen flat on his face. Maybe King was lucky to get banished to Black Label, and hopefully Bendis can continue to do his own thing. Me? I think I'll be spending a lot more time reading back issues if this is what we'll be getting from DC going forward.

2.5/10 on the basis of Capullo's art alone. I would go a touch higher but have to deduct points for the unintelligible lettering on BWL.
