Low effort "edge" and shock value. A lot of excess and pretentiousness with nothing to show for it. In a year with no shortage of shitty Scott Lobdell and James Robinson comics, this might actually be the stupidest thing DC has published.

If you thought Death Metal was pretty dumb, then this one knocks it out of the park with how badly it mangles up its own story. Those who are illiterate would love this, however. Tailor-made for those without critical thinking. It's funny how corporate simps like Fenix have nothing to say about the writing quality of the books, only the marketing budget.

This was really bad. The majority of the issue was just bland exposition recapping previous issues, with some low-brow jokes scattered throughout. A very amateurly made comic.

Bland dialogue that has to explain everything to the reader, empty plot developments, Jason being a self-insert character, and bad artwork. The usual.

Bill Willingham's brain has deteriorated so much that he's forgotten how to write. Beware of shills giving this above a 5, they likely have a parasocial relationship with Willingham. I almost feel sorry for them.

Bill Willingham has a loud and clear message: if you have an IQ over 50, then this is not for you.

What a cringefest. Murphy should take some time to learn how to write instead of name-searching himself on Twitter on the time. Just shows that being friends with Scott Snyder is more important to DC than having writing talent.

I wonder how many fanfic writers are going to sue Murphy for plagiarism?

Imagine how good this could be if Sean Gordon Murphy had nothing to do with it.

This book is so pointless. It's a boring exposition dump on half-ass pages that DC decided to call "manga-inspired" because they couldn't bother to pay a colorist. Just bad writing all around. I pity the people who have to keep convincing themselves that this is amazing.

Basically a badly mishandled ripoff of a Grant Morrison meta joke.

edgelord nonsense, corporately manufactured for the lowest common denominator

I can see why this book is being canceled. Sales are pretty low, huh? There are more sock puppet accounts astroturfing this than there are people reading. You can tell how they all use the same writing style. Very similar to a certain account that got banned for perverted and unspeakable deeds. It's very worrying, I fear his mental health will not hold up. Hopefully, he's barred from touching any guns.

Once again, does anyone give a shit about Kindred anymore? No wonder Marvel is desperate to kick Spencer off.

Imagine taking 80 issues to retcon a single story no one considered canon anyway.

yawwwwwn

I've always said that Hush was a shallow and overrated piece of trash made solely for the lowest common denominator, the type of person who lacks the brainpower to critically dissect a poorly written mystery. Jeph Loeb is in full Ultimatum form here, a hack who depends solely on his name and corporate branding to sell. Looks like I was proven 100% right, looking at the people who are desperately shilling for this, like the pedophile apologist and his weird parasocial relationship.

Fables went to shit after 60 issues, and this continues the trend. Perfectly made for the lowest common denominator.

Sales for this series have been atrocious, especially for a heavily promoted Batman Black Label book. There's a good reason why.

It's the worst-selling Batman Black Label book for good reason

I almost feel sorry for people who've wasted so much money on this Tumblr fic that have to trick themselves into liking it.

Bland and lifeless. Johns once again proving that he can't write Batman for shit. His dedicated fanboys might spam this with 10s and send death threats to anyone who disagrees, but bad writing is bad writing.

Dull, and too desperate to parrot manga instead of doing its own thing. This is "we have manga at home" of comics. The fact that Red Hood fanboys are only talking about "feats" and "power levels" shows you the IQ level of who this panders to.

Bland and cliched drivel. Every time a Johns fan harasses me for not blindly drinking the kool-aid, I'm gonna knock it down another point.

Dull and pointless, this issue more or less cements Green Arrow as one of the worst Rebirth books so far.

Very clumsy storytelling and dialogue, and the dual narration simply doesn't synergize well.

LMAO Azzarello is a clown, a self-caricature of his former self. Tries desperately so hard to be controversial, but can't do anything other than make a boring, lifeless comic.

Azzarello understands Jason Todd as a character very well, and he's 100% on his analysis. Unfortunately, he fails to do anything to break the cycle of terribly written Red Hood books.

Tries too hard with gimmicky guest stars. Dialogue is really bad with cliched one-liners bouncing all around (even worse than Bendis). It tries to go for an emotional moment near the end, but it fails because the narrator won't shut up. Surprised that this didn't get canceled.

Laughably awkward issue about Red Hood projecting his daddy issues all around him. The eyeroll-worthy parallel that the writer attempts to draw between Jason's resurrection and Bizarro's revival would be comical if the writer didn't expect readers to take it so seriously.

Who is this for again?

A dull issue with god awful narration. There is very little logic in character attitudes, and the series continues to take a "tell, don't show" approach to the Oliver/Dinah relationship. Only propped up by Ferreyra's excellent art. Safe to say this is one of the worse Rebirth series.

A typical "Oliver Queen loses his fortune" story, something that's happened again and again, heavy on narration boxes. Everyone you loved from the Lemire run gets character assassinated.

This arc really stumbles its way to the end. Dialogue continues to be overexcessive, and there are major gaps in the logic that dictates how characters behave. Percy's pacing problems from his previous series continue here. All in all, Green Arrow is a just a mediocre comic with good art.

This series needs to get back to main story arc, instead of fishing for sales numbers.

A slow issue, but unlike other "slow" issues (see: Wonder Woman), but the plot has been utterly unremarkable. Second issue of this arc, and it's stuck with characters talking about their backgrounds to one another. And then throw in some Tim/Steph fanservice that seems to be in there just for the sake of pandering to Tim fans. Seems like Detective Comics just continues to be the "Batman book that's nowhere as good as the main Batman book".

A slightly-better-than-mediocre Bat book. There isn't much to this issue outside of a plot twist that was telegraphed well in advance, and makes very little logical sense. Clearly the weakest among the double-shipped Bat books, but not quite terrible. Best treated as a fanservice book.

Not terrible, but not great, either. It's an improvement from Percy's previous work, which was stuffed with shallow political analogies and unintentional racism. It's still full of Tumblr buzzwords, but it's not as bad this time. Tried a bit too hard to force the Oliver-Dinah relationship. Yes, we get it, DC. They're supposed to be "destined true loves". The art is the high point.

Comprises of two okay stories, neither of which are interesting enough on their own. The 13-page "main story" does barely enough to introduce everyone's quirks, but little else. A disappointment coming from the previous New Suicide Squad run.

Good art, mediocre writing with long-winded exposition dumps.

Marauders (2019) #26 Dec 1, 2021

Very little to take away from these showcases. They're all just lead-ins for hypothetical future stories that may not even exist. Good artwork, though.

A serviceable introduction with poor art. The moral quandaries are displayed in full, and a bit on-the-nose. Not quite as good as the previous New Suicide Squad arc.

A surprisingly sound character-driven issue that sees Jean-Paul Valley turn over a new leaf, and Jason truly deal with his own death. The latter hasn't seen anything like that in his own series, so it's nice to see this, given that DC has essentially distanced itself away from everything that made pre-N52 Red Hood work.

Some good stuff, some bad stuff here. Most of this issue flowed well, except for the contrived writing that leads to the cliffhanger. The only reason there's any tension to the cliffhanger is because of the rumors of a certain character being killed off. Barrows is back on art, and his work is considerably weaker than Martinez's.

A straight-forward action flick. Hitch handles widescreen panels well, but struggles with close-ups and faces.

Rushed storyline that is more of a setup than a full arc. Still better written than Percy's Green Arrow, though.

The opening is a bit contrived, but the interactions between Grayson and Gordon are nice. This feels mainly like a bridge issue to set up the next major beat of the crossover.

In some ways it delivers, but it can't help but hit some really tired cliches. The ending cliffhanger is a mess that brings to the surface the ever-present problem with Big 2 comics: that their individual stories are often getting derailed by the "big picture".

7.5
Detective Comics (2016) #941 Sep 28, 2016

Overall, it's a decent conclusion to an underwhelming crossover that tries to be too many things at once. This issue provides a big bombastic finale but it isn't quite able to find its thematic conclusion. We're better off resuming the storylines of two excellent Batbooks and a decent Detective Comics run.

I expect I'll get death threats again but's sad and pathetic that mentally-deranged morons are slandering Chip Zdarsky for writing Red Hood as a human character with flaws instead of whatever Mary Sue crap he was before.

LMAO Chip Zdarsky writes Red Hood as an actual character instead of a Mary Sue, and it's made that one mentally ill Red Hood fan super salty.

And of course, terminally online Red Hood fans and their alts are slandering Zdarsky for daring to write a good story instead of a Mary Sue fanfic.

lol the Twitter incels are ass-blasted over a comic they didn't even read Edit: Even funnier, the folks with the parasocial relationship with Jason Todd are once again slandering the best writer he's ever had.

Overall, it's a strong finish, despite a few loose ends not being completely addressed. The character arcs for Duke, Damian, and Dick are done very well, with their contrasting viewpoints of what the Robin mantle mean to each character. It does feel a bit rushed at times, with not every plot point from previous issues being fully fleshed out, and the artwork is inconsistent due to all the different artists. Still, it's one of DC's better events, and certainly worth a read (tie-ins notwithstanding).

Very strong issue that moves multiple plots forward. Gordon gets some very nice moments, and the other storylines begin to come together nicely. There's an interesting cliffhanger there as well.

It's a very emotionally heavy issue. The glimpses of future (or Elseworld) Batmans play nicely with the present-day story, and Snyder unexpectedly brings in a Chekov's gun to complete the arc for some meaningful closure.

Deals with the emotional impact from the previous issue, while setting up the greater plot. Lots of intrigue, and little nods to classic Batman stories.

Provides a great deal of backstory and character depth to the Gothams, while still moving the plot brusquely along with minimal handholding. Easily among the best Rebirth books.

A good thematical setup for what should be another memorable Batman saga. Great use of visuals to convey the changing of the seasons. Duke should make a fine sidekick, as King has a great handle on his character, as seen in Robin War. Probably the best of the Rebirth issues.

A smart and realistic Batman book that actually explores the details of its world. It's what Batman Earth One would be if it were written by someone competent.

Forget the god awful Deathstroke runs of the past. This is a deep and challenging book that examines the morally gray role of a self-serving mercenary in a world torn by political conflicts. This is DC's top anti-hero book by far.

Solid writing and characterization all around. Tomasi really knows how to make his characters come across as real people. A great Jim Gordon story.

Mainly a setup issue, but there's a lot of spywork being done, and several plot threads being lined up against each other.

Another excellent issue that examines what it truly means to be Robin, and what Dick Grayson is willing to do to keep everyone safe. Each of the Robins is written very well, and gets time to show off who they truly are beyond a single dimension.

It's a shame that the Amazing Spider-Man will never be half as good as Zdarsky's Spider-Man. Spencer fans be mad

At its core, this book is slapstick comedy stuffed with visual gags and the occasional sci-fi action, but there's a surprising layer of maturity underneath. What seems like an obvious setup for a love triangle sidesteps the cliched drama, and all characters come out for the better. Differences between the characters' motivations are conveyed clearly without being too heavyhanded.
