The best hero comics to read are the ones made by people who value the legacy of these characters, and Ewing clearly reveres them.

Not sure I have EVER read an issue #1 this strong (second time through). Having already read through "Infinity", I wanted to come back through these early issues and look for the brilliant setups and I was not disappointed. Hickman is indeed one of the most gifted architects of his generation.

Hickman reaches back and ties this one to his Fantastic Four run on the way to the build up for Secret Wars.

Just fun.

Masterpiece

It’s a perfect comic and a concept I have long since thought would thrive (revisiting DC’s Silver Age).

Could have been better written for children, Dustin Nguyen's watercolor impression of the pint sized heroes was pretty fantastic though.

A daunting and haunted read, but a must visit too.

Def a good start, Andy Kubert is just good old fashioned comic book greatness.

At last delivering on the promise made four years ago.

A great issue in that it has continued to keep and build tension, while also releasing some.

Scalera is just stupid talented, story is heating up too.

Black Hammer is one of the greatest series (if not entirely original) to come out of the last decade. This crossover however, kinda takes away from what made the series so special in the first place by pairing them with their legitimized counterparts.

Hyper-violent ala Frank Miller does John Wick to the extreme. Has a lot to live up to at this point and it could still go anywhere.

Art is astounding, way ahead of its time.

Character art is truly unbelievable, 3D assets not as much.

Feverishly colorful with whip-snap 2D pop art, wrapped inside of a ‘weird western’ decanter and served with a finishing sauce of “didn’t see that coming”, more please.

My favorite series in recent memory gets an excellent spinoff! Getting to see what Weird was doing when he was disappearing continues to build on the lore of the Black Hammer series.

Absolutely stunning, the wonderfully weird world of Black Hammer.

Judge this on it's own merit. It isn’t 1986 anymore and that’s ok. "The Dark Knight Returns" holds it's status today because of the boundaries it broke in its release, not to mention it being a single Batman story for the ages. Just as you wouldn’t compare a modern day play with Shakespeare, look at this as an evolution rather than a comparison. Miller, already pushing 60, decides yet again to return to his holy grail, and why not after flame out 'Strikes Again', both deserved redemption. This time he returns with backup in the form of writer Brian Azzarello (Joker/Batman: Damned) and DC legacy artist Andy Kubert (Batman and Son). The story is a classic DC tale of the fabled shrunken and bottle city of Kandor, final remains of the planet Krypton. Upon his release, self appointed cult leader 'Quar father', deems he and his kind the master race of Earth due to their superhuman supremacy absorbed through the rays of Earth's yellow sun. As the story progresses we are introduced to our cast of heroes through the wonderfully strange “Dark Knight Universe” one-shots, featured in Miller’s crass art style, more reminiscent of his work in 'Ronin' rather than that of TDKR. The collection of variant covers this series earned (over 70) is an illustrated love letter to not only the Dark Knight but Miller himself, with names like Jim Lee, Brian Bolland and other industry titans all paying tribute. This is a worthy entry to the series and an expansion into Miller's unique world.

Artistically there is much to love here, sadly all marred by Miller’s unhealthy Trump obsession. Rafael Grampa’s bizarrely unique style is fantastically suited to the DKR Universe, if only the narrative could have fit the design.

“The Last Crusade” serves as a prelude to the “Death in the Family” storyline in Frank Miller’s ‘Dark Knight Universe’ canon. The writing is arguably the best Miller has produced in decades and features consistently fantastic strokes from Romita Jr. It’s a much smaller story than “TDKR” or more comparatively ‘Master Race’, but fits in perfectly with Miller's world of grim tales.

Too many haters, too little time.

Due to some of the high profile shifts in creative direction for this one, plus issues caused by the pandemic, this one-shot ultimately falls short. At least that’s what I’d like to say. Outside of one or two of the stories, really not enough was divulged for this issue to matter enough. Fans are definitely getting impatient, hopefully Death Metal #3 delivers (it did).

What was this?? Easily most disappointing one-shot of the event thus far. Don’t the writers get tired of explaining the same things over and over? Bc we definitely get tired of re-reading them.

An excellent concept riffing off elements from notorious fantasy publication ‘Heavy Metal’, which (not coincidentally) is managed by fellow DC scribe Grant Morrison. It seems to me today’s comic book readers have become awfully spoiled. I’ve been a DC reader for two decades and this is one of my favorite concepts in a long time. Getting to explore the Dark Multiverse and the upside down Batman incarnations is the stuff of dreams for me. The one-shots for these new villains (Dawnbreaker, Red Death, etc) gives more depth to each of the evil entities, presenting them with a tangible fear and building a proper sense of the horrors to take place. Even the smallest characters in DC canon have a place in "Metal", with superstar writer Scott Snyder and real life metalhead Greg Capullo pushing the pen, this is not a series to be missed by fans of the lore.

Geoff Johns continues his shaping of the DC Universe with his "Rebirth" theme, this, an introduction leading to an overall bigger story. Rebirth was the only logical step after the end of the New 52. It's purpose was multifold, address missing characters pre-Flashpoint, introduce the Multiverse and successfully integrate DC's most acclaimed property of the last half century, the Watchmen.

Tynion tends to use a lot of exposition, too much affects the pacing negatively, good hook tho.

While not entirely original (or canonical) it is certain to entertain and satisfy horror and superhero fans alike. While I wasn’t overwhelmingly impressed by the story (a typical ‘outbreak’ scenario, though in the form of anti-life), the intense art style overcompensates for any lack of imagination in that department. There were some refreshing and unique changes (namely GL Canary), but on the other hand certain major character deaths happened too fast to really matter.

I was really hoping it was about all the dead heroes trying to escape from an undead world.

An intensely rewarding and unorthodox visual experience.

Avant-garde pop art minimalism, gorgeously un-filmable.

Visual storytelling at the highest level. Don't be surprised if Huddleston walks away with an Eisner next year.

More brilliance from this duo, the high concept splash pages that are often museum worthy, you should be reading.

I had to stop reading the issue to come write this review. I have not read Marvel in well over a decade but couldn't resist the allure of Peach Momoko's watercolor cover. Every panel of this comic is incredible. Not only is it a fresh perspective on characters we all know inside and out, but the art is just as good as it gets in the medium.

Dan Mora takes to Batman like a fish to water, great backup too.

And now it’s time for something entirely different.

An exemplary exhibition of the format, untranslatable to any other medium 10/10.

Deliriously gorgeous pulp entertainment.

Art is perfectly evocative of cosmic Kirby. The writing is of course wonderful, but very esoteric at this stage, so if you don't have at least some background here it might take an additional read to absorb.

I challenge you to find a better example of pure eye popping, mouth watering, color blasting pulp joy.

Comic book retcon mastery, he even connected it to Flashpoint, Rebirth etc, 10/10!!

Rating for Immortal WW, Jen Bartel’s treatment of the goddess was regal.

Put off reading this for a long time, dumb mistake. Neon futuristic Gotham ala Batman Beyond, with Dan Mora’s exquisite pencils and a broke and forsaken Bruce Wayne/Batman makes for a killer plot.

Treat yourself to this one, Jones absolutely crushes.

The Cloonan/Bartel arc was something special.

Storywise just a filler issue, but artistically Sharpy is crushing it. He took a different approach this time and instead of producing traditional lines was able to full color airbrush some glorious panels.

A subpar issue art wise imo, writing/story were great though, especially the very ‘Grant Morrison’ cliffhanger ending.

I haven’t read every issue of Hal Jordan’s adventures through space and time, but I would wager that this is one of the single greatest entries in the publishing history of DC’s GL lines. Morrison proves his genius and creates a story of pure poetry in a profound and relative narrative with Liam Sharp’s transcendent lines and ethereal colors.

What is likely Grant's final DC run (according to artist Liam Sharp who follows me on Twitter) is hitting all of the familiar bells, to set up for a likely emotional two-part finale.

DC’s Earth-One line is reintroducing us to their greatest icons one volume at a time but with new leases on life. Since these characters exist on Earth-One in the DC multiverse (Not Earth-0), this is not intended to be a retelling of their origin stories but rather an alternate telling of them. This story is one you may already know if you are familiar with Lantern Lore, but the writing is what impresses the most. The novel was seemingly written as if it was expected to be adapted into a feature film, ditching the tired old military protocol of the ‘Corps’ for a space opera theme that favors the visual storytelling beautifully illustrated here. With vol 2 already on the way we will get to see how the ring continues to unfold this Hal Jordan’s universe. As was already shown at the end of vol 1, we know there are much more sinister things on the way. I also highly recommend the Superman Earth One trilogy.
