80th Anniversary 100-Page Super Spectacular: Robin #1
Jun 5, 2020 |
Pretty solid celebration of one of my favourite heroes since being a small kid. The standout story to me was Marv Wolfman. I knew he still had it in him! There was a pretty good variety and I like how each Robin had their limelight. Also dug Tom King, Tomasi, Tynion IV, Amy Wolfram, Chuck Dixon (I legit thought he was blacklisted), and Judd Winick. |

80th Anniversary 100-Page Super Spectacular: Catwoman #1
Jun 6, 2020 |
So much variety and different talents in this one. Tom King's story obviously stands out and it is good to hear more from that plot line. It was a really touching story. Paul Dini, Mindy Newell, and Ed Brubaker also had some solid stories. Man, Kelley Jones' Catwoman looks horrendous, but his Clayface more than makes up for it. One thing I realized while reading this is how awful some of Catwoman's art has looked in the past, even if it now stands as classic. Even Darwyn Cooke... that has to be my least favourite Darwyn Cooke piece ever. |

The parts with Eddie are great. I don't like the sections at the back of the book, they are practically slightly modified Arkham Asylum tape rip-offs and make the characters seem very out of character in the pursuit of sounding creepy. It works when it is Zsasz, but idk about Eddie *shrug* |

It is 2019. You don't need to explain the definition of "insanity" anymore, even though you said crazy... and I know crazy and insanity are splitting hairs. It is a total cliche at this point. Also, the villagers are seriously throwing molotov cocktails at a demonic creature with its head and ribcage on fire, I would say the definition of stupidity should apply to them, but it actually seemed to scare Carnage off. |

Bunn decides to Bendis it up by throwing in a couple splash pages and explaining events up till now, so he doesn't need to write a story. Leaving you with a comic that is nothing more than a conversation resulting in a team-up that is reversed in the final page. Congrats. If you are reading this you can now skip this issue. You should probably skip the next too, because it's Cullen Bunn. |

As far as Superman books currently being published go, I would rank them as: 1. Superman Up in the Sky 2. Action Comics 3. Superman Year One .......... 100. Superman This book was pretty good at setup for Event Leviathan and it was genuinely entertaining for the mystery to be unraveling, but enough is enough. Everything Bendis does with these books feels like artifical lengthening. Now, I might have to put it below Year One. At least Year One is doing something unique and unexpected. |

I do like John Romita Jr on original work like Silencer. However, when he is rendering classic heroes it just looks wrong and some of his action scenes feel a lot more half-assed than in Silencer. I also have deep dissatisfaction that Bendis stuck his hand in the Legion of Doom cookie jar, because now we have to piece together when this showdown takes place... even though in the main JL book their showdown seems to have a lot of buildup, and finality to it. |

I was thinking several times I wish The Last Hunt self-narration thing would shut up, because it isn't working here and has overstayed it's welcome as a homage. It is starting to feel very drawn out, repetitive, and tiresome. This arc really should have been cut down to 3 issues and 3 .HU issues. Nick, you have failed me again. I always get into his stories and then they all fall apart at the end. |

I wanted to like this, but by this point I was so done with it. Somehow the conclusion feels rushed despite the series being so long and at the end of the day it just feels like The Last Hunt without the same level of nihilism or craft. Ramos once again can't draw Spider-man, with inconsistent proportions, and he often looks like an alien. |

This was an incredible chore to read. The part with female Electro wasn't interesting and despite her saying "this is the first time people have voted on a public execution" the exact plot point happened in a previous issue of Green Arrow from not long ago, and better might I add. The art with the Kindred is so obvious now that it is some sort of Spider-man. Whether or not to trust that idk. Was the final story really written by bots? It is an interesting experiment I guess, but it was strange to see what would usually be some goofy YouTube video as a comic story. |

Not bad. Kind of like DC's attempt at the Ms. Marvel or Squirrel Girl demographic. Do these new characters have a future in the DC Universe? Probably not more than a background character, or maybe they could be on the Teen Titans at one point, but most likely they will just keep appearing in more of these middle grade graphic novels. |

The art and style were top-notch and I love Brian K. Vaughan from previously reading Private Eye. Really good issue. I am just wondering if you could speak Spanish and not English, if you could get an entirely different viewpoint by reading the Spanish sections? That would be brilliant since both characters end up with the same fate. I don't speak Spanish sadly so I can't confirm. (This review was 3 years late because Image offered it as their FCBD 2018.) |

I am more mixed because of the direction Batgirl's solo is staying on rather than the quality of the story. A couple things: 1. Why back to the purple costume? Don't get me wrong I like it, but she literally just changed costumes and I liked the new one. Was it because it is too sexualized? 2. Although it makes me slightly uncomfortable to see Batman tearing up because he realized he was in denial about false love, it is still a very human and relatable thing and makes it a pretty heavy plot point. |

A twisted father/son camping trip. It doesn't stand much ground on it's own as it is very light in story length, but as part of the arc it is very atmospheric and the reveal at the end was pretty crazy. I love that Thomas Wayne used his skills as a surgeon and also that he can't stop singing while being with his unconcious son. The art is some of Janin's best to date. Absolutely gorgeous issue. |

"...I'm still here" Damn, that last line gave me chills. So we see the often criticized use of a folktale from an earlier issue used as double allegory for the events of the run, and more parallels to Bane, with the climbing out of the pit. There is something really satisfying about Batman breaking out of his funk of the past like 20 issues and denying that Bane or Thomas Wayne managed to break him. Is this the start of the redemption act? It is also interesting how rooftops were where Bruce feels most at home, but almost everything terrible that has happened to him was atop a rooftop, and now while deep inside a pit, basically the furthest thing possible from a rooftop... he finds his motivation and strength to fight back. This run better have a happy ending where Batman returns to the rooftops with Catwoman. The art was really nice again, especially Thomas' bright crimson symbol while descending into the pit. |

Thankfully this issue happened. I was so used to detractors complaining about not knowing what happened to Thomas Wayne for *ages*. I knew from the start it would be explained. So I would reply "It's a mystery. Keep waiting. That's what mysteries are... a mystery." Of course now that it is revealed they will continue to say things like "Tom King never had anything planned, he just made it up on the spot". It used to be "Tom King forgot". As for the actual issue itself, umm it sure isn't the kind of penultimate issue you would expect. The way it is delivered is a bit of a clusterfuck, likely due to the premature ending. It seems the flashback is being told in reverse from Thomas Wayne's perspective. I would have to reread it to confirm that observation. It doesn't really give much new information that observant readers couldn't already piece together, but it does explain how Thomas Wayne is still around. I also haven't read the Flashpoint Batman stuff from the past, so I can't say how much of his past is new material here, but I do like that he took Selina under his wing and they had a kind of father/daughter relationship. That establishes a connection between the two immediately, and with one issue left it is information that is sorely needed. Looking forward to the... wedding? Showdown? As well as Tynion IV's Batman, which I previously thought I wouldn't be. |

Dec 18, 2019 |
I agree in many ways with Linkush, this isn't a real ending and I was flipflopping on if I was completely satisfied with it. Hopefully it will be all wrapped up completely in Batman/Catwoman (especially since Gotham Girl is supposed to marry Duke by the end of his run, and that doesn't happen here). However as a celebration of this run I couldn't be more happy. Allegories out the wazoo with the football game (in Porky's!)referencing Batman's struggle, a sort of cheeky message to readers saying those who have lost will understand, and Batman and Catwoman having that realization they don't need a traditional marriage... because since when did they decide that law rules what they do? Yeah, pretty much as good an ending I could hope for with 20 or some issues being cut. The one area I did feel let down with was the showdown with Thomas. There was practically no action packed showdown at all, but really that was never what this run was about anyway, so I will forgive it. Oh, and looking forward to Tynion IV's run. |

Not digging it as much as I was Tom King's run, but it is alright. Is it just me or does it seem like Tynion IV is going for another big masterplan immediately after City of Bane? It almost feels like he is telling the same story we just heard, but minus the stylistic writing or depth that came with it. Overall it is an enjoyable but completely disposable Batman so far. |

Of all the TMNT/Batman crossovers so far, this one starts the strongest. I wondered what they would do after exploring both Batman's world and TMNT's in the previous 2, so combining them is like the natural progression and some of the designs are just damn cool like Red Hood Raphael. |

This was pretty enjoyable and I like that this book references Tom King's run, but without any real nod to Gotham City being the City of Bane, and Duke off not being married to Gotham Girl... the continuity of this issue is definitely questionable, at least until we find out Gotham Girl doesn't marry Duke until the end of Batman/Catwoman. |

Batman's Grave #3
Dec 23, 2019 |
My initial thoughts were it felt like Warren Ellis is barely even trying. Most of the story takes place in the batcave, across several issues, where Alfred is sassy to the point of approaching antagonistic behaviour toward Bruce. Then I realized the one who really deserves the blame for not trying is Bryan Hitch. So much of the page count estate is taken up by action that is awkwardly framed and flows poorly, it is completely embarassing when compared to the action in Warren's The WildStorm, which honestly had some of the greatest in all of comics. I once again loved the theatrics of this Batman's detective work. Disappointing, but not bad in short. |

He is possibly my favourite comic book character of all-time. |

So close... so close. I very much appreciate this is a thing that exists, Maxx is my favourite comic book after all, but The Maxx is only represented here in his base form from the first 20 issues and it doesn't seem to have any place in continiuity. The crossover works well, but also feels like it could benefit from going further down the psychological route of Maxx rather than playing it safe to suit the wider audience. |

Wow, some of these panels by Kelley Jones are masterpieces, like the one where you can see the batmobile taking off in the reflection of Commisioner Gordon's glasses. Scott Peterson is also worth bringing up for his clearly passionate writing of this character and his rogue gallery. |

Batman The Animated Series had so much better examples of how Batman is responsible for how Gotham is, I would even argue some of these don't add up at all, but perhaps it is commenting on it from another angle, a butterfly effect rather than Batman indirectly or directly being responsible. I loved Kelley Jones' art and the story was still effective. It is good to see Scarecrow being used effectively, he hasn't had the best stories since Rebirth began |

Batman The Animated Series might just be my favourite run of any media of entertainment, and during the show part of what made it great imo is how grounded it was. Almost every villain in the show had a reasonable explanation to explain everything that is going on with them and why they become who they are. Psychology, science, whatever. The only really extraordinary or unbelievable concepts were like Supergirl and Etrigan, which seemed pretty alien to the rest of the series(but still were very welcome). That was like 2 episodes. There were a lot of unexplored characters and concepts that Batman is a lot more known for in the comic books, especially how he fits into the greater DC Universe. I am all for exploring that. I am so happy they got Paul Dini and Alan Burnett on board so this is the real deal. |

Don't force politics onto characters you write. Why is Alice talking about the "male gaze"? I am sorry but it is so ridiculous when you are reading a comic and something stupid like that takes you out of it. Other than that the issue was fine, a few flaws here and there. |

Batwoman was on an uptick just as it ended, I am glad I don't have to read it anymore but also happy it tried it's best on the way out. The art was amazing, especially the colour work. They should keep this art team around for any future Batwoman project. |

By the looks of how offended everyone was, I was expecting to be reading some really messed up shit. What I actually read is quite possibly the tamest work Brian Azzarello has ever published. It was exactly what I originally expected. Passable and enjoyable. After reading Hellblazer and Faithless though, this is Sesame Street edge. |

I see why this book is banking on variant covers to stay afloat. If you thought Catwoman's art was too good, Selina is too old, too respectable... and not ditzy enough - well, do I have the book for you. If you really must read something with Black Cat, skip this and instead pick up the .HU issue of Hunted that stars Black Cat. That did a much better job of telling an engaging story and presenting Felicia as a relatable character. |

I'm sorry but... I gave this series 4 issues. The art has always been great, but the story is incredibly light. I am actually shocked anyone can get any entertainment from this issue. It has the story telling of a 3rd person sci-fi shooter like Mass Effect, but only the comments your NPC team mates make during combat. Absolutely and totally atrocious. Good God. That was probably my harshest review ever, but wow... just wow. |

Historians believe aliens created the pyramids because they are racist towards Egyptians, cops' biggest fear are black people, immensely ignorant white principals with zero manners. All preached to us by a hipster white dude who probably hasn't ever been discriminated against in his life. What a shitshow. It's a shame there are so many stupid lines like that, because I was into this book on the premise and art alone. You need to remember as a writer to remove your mindset from your "world changing" Twitter persona once in a while, especially if you choose to bring no new angles to the table and jump to conclusions. |

It's really a hard pill to swallow that there is evidence all over the world that Captain America was not responsible for Stevil's hostile takeover as part of Hydra, but some conspiracy theorists have a big enough voice to make it a problem. I just find it all very unrealistic, there would definitely be a small percentage of the population who is crazy and believes it was actually Cap, but conspiracies usually are a vocal minority at best and don't really have any power in the grand scheme of things. I won't hold this wacky writearound for Hydra drama on the current writer though, it isn't his fault Nick Spencer decided to make two Caps and therefore make it much more difficult for Cap to have to rationally deal with the aftermath of something he personally isn't responsible for. I know this sounded really negative, but my problems are more with Secret Empire's cop-out ending, more than this issue itself, and that is why I am still giving it a positive score. |

Well this was a bit of a mess, wasn't it? I have a feeling this was a fill-in arc and Vendetti didn't have much to do with it, his writing is usually miles above this. If you are trying to kick off a new character you should give more focus on the character himself rather than comparing him to Poison Ivy or Swamp Thing, we already know and like those characters. The point of this book is to sell us on Damage. You can tell they want to go for the old Hulk issues where Hulk would go toe to toe with someone in the Marvel universe, and that is a good idea, but we need to focus more on the title character instead of just making him a gimmick. |

For as messy as the middle half of this main event was, I was expecting Snyder to miss the landing, and while this final issue didn't fix everything wrong with the middle half of the event, it did deliver an epic and satisfying conclusion. This really should have been a Crisis title, but I think the name they chose gives you the impression it is a smaller event. My main complaint would be that the New Age of Heroes weren't really tied into the event at all, I was expecting them to be. |

This is basically a solo John Stewart story where Huckleberry Hound takes the place of a washed up comedian in a bar that he shares his stories with. In other words, Huckleberry Hound is really only an aesthetic to the story and doesn't help nor detract. The story itself is pretty solid, but only recommended for Green Lantern fans, like myself. |

These vary in quality, as they always do, but there is a sense they are getting better with each one. The standout to me was Steve Orlando's Midnighter and Apollo story, the choice of Mallah and Brain as villains they could relate to was pretty brilliant. Some of it was borderline fan fiction, like Stuart Moore's, but it reads like something your friend would write as an inside joke and that is kind of okay too. The Superboy story was pretty heavy too... that was a fantastic and well written short. |

Idk what to say... if the purpose of this book is to get me excited about all 3 of these books, well 2 succeeded and one was just a great short story. I had a discussion with a friend about Bendis' Superman story and her problem with the issue was that it doesn't explain anything, and I definitely agree with her, however Bendis gives a lot of details in interviews and I was able to piece it all together save for what happened with Lois Lane. Personally, I think Bendis did a pretty acceptable job. Tom King's story was short and sweet, and No Justice Prelude had some incredible art and visuals and did a good job introducing the teams. I hope the event itself won't be too cluttered. Totally worth the 25 cents. |

I am absolutely speechless by how bad this book is. Neal Adams shouldn't be allowed to write anything. He is a good artist, but his written work is nonsensical and actually hurts to read. I will admit though I did like some of the insults he wrote for Deadman, but the greatest insult was the back of the book where it confirms DC let him write another Batman book after Batman Odyssey. |

It felt like a story that would have happened on one of the missions, not complaining though those games had excellent writing. Also this could be a huge stretch but the font of "The Mark" looked a lot how I remember The Mask's logo and Doug Mahnke was very prolific on The Mask. Coincidence? Probably... |

Well, this was a bit of a disappointment. Everything I have read by Gail Simone up till now has been fantastic (even the recent Wonder Woman\Conan) but this left me feeling very unsure. I found Domino a bit obnoxious and the plot a bit light, but I am hoping we see more of Deadpool and the cute doggo. |

Wonderful madness. This was a bit less great than the previous series, but this series had so many complications. Aside from the lesser art and the smaller scale, I think it is a success. It is a miracle we even got a second one. Sacrifices had to be made for the return of MCR. |

Doomsday Clock #3
Jan 24, 2018 |
What sets apart Doomsday Clock from other events recently is how confident it is in itself. It has high expectations to live up to, nerd expectations (looking at you friend whose name rhymes with Macy ;)), the highest of all expectations. For me it succeeds with flying colours. I predict a lot of purists will cry foul that Comedian was saved, but another group would complain if he weren't included at all. I was completely absorbed front to back. The art by Gary Frank really nails the darker aesthetic you would expect from the Watchmen meeting with the DCU and Geoff Johns is like the only writer I can think of who could do this justice. I think purists should get over Watchmen's legacy and appreciate the event for what it is. Watchmen will always be the fantastic graphic novel it is, that doesn't mean you shouldn't ever attempt to pull any risks or put it on a pedestal that can never be touched. Do you know how many ongoings have heroes with groundbreaking graphic novels? Pink Floyd didn't stop after Dark Side of the Moon. Why should Watchmen? |

I was afraid we weren't going to learn more about Rorschach until the final few issues, with all the delays happening it somewhat gives the impression it didn't really progress the story, but collected this will be a really great part of the story to read and as always I loved the backup feature further fleshing out the world of Watchmen. |

There is something here, I am not one of those nuns who will just write anything sexual off as the devil's work. There is a genuine uneasy and off eeriness to it that is gripping. This was a surprise. I love whenever there is a new GL to follow and having one so isolated on their own in the middle of the farthest sector is a cool idea. I expected to not like Jo, but I was pleasantly surprised. She isn't obnoxiously full of herself, but almost cynical about her alien and inhuman surroundings. This started feeling a lot like Batman Universe and it got me excited for it. I liked the team-up of Flash and The Atom, but I don't like how much Atom worships Flash for being a scientist... he said Flash was the only one! What about Ray Palmer?! |

Weird Science can not get me wrong. I am not thinking of any of these digital titles as a stop-gap, in fact I think they are just as every bit good as mainstream titles and that is why I hold them to the same standards. This was okay. Definitely won't ever be said to be the definitive Reverse Flash story, but for a passage of time and entertainment? It does the job. |

The criticism around this issue is so exhausting. Love is mentioned twice, but I guess we should all ignore common sense and dive face first into the river full of identical logs, as we all roll downstream without any individual thoughts or rationality. While we wallow in the bliss of anger and stupidity. I can justify the choice easily. This wasn't the real Ivy, she was only along with Harley the course of this series. Therefore she doesn't feel like the true Ivy, hence the sorrowful goodbye kiss as she disappears for good. "Cinema Sins" complaints would have also been raised about why they had time to make out while in a hurry, differentiating between a quick kiss on the lips and making out is more difficult in a still image. I do love this relationship and I am a straight man. I do not mean to offend anybody if I misrepresented what they found wrong with it. I just don't think DC editorial pulled a 180 on bi-sexual representation (BoP came out the same week and has lots) |

I have been so flip floppy on whether I enjoy this book or not. It hits all levels of legit excitement and legit disgust. This issue specifically won me over though, Harley's character is obnoxious and just downright terrible, but the plot in this one shows that the book has growth. Like an old punk band starting to become too old to be singing songs about being 17. The 4th grade humour and annoyance was toned down (but still there) in favour of a solid plot with a darker tone. |

The bad: Harley Quinn's characterization remains the more obnoxious one we have come to hate and she is extremely annoying in this issue. The good: The concept of Harley becoming a Fury and anything involving Apokolips for fans of New Gods like myself. It is strange but I like the story and hate the character (since Palmiotti) |

Don't have a lot to say. I do love Harley as a character, but was never a fan of her new direction in her solo series. Humphries was a nice improvement bringing a lot more emotional depth and self destruction to the character, but it was still a bit too scattered. This final issue was a good and fittingly scatter-brained finale. |

I didn't think I would miss this version of the character, but seeing this world and cast again did feel a bit nice. If you cannot stand immature Deadpool Harley, probably skip this one. Reading this really shows how much more emotional depth and maturity has come to Sam Humphries run as of recently. Side note: I legit thought this was a one-shot before finishing it. Guess I was thinking the Azzarello book. |

I am not a He-Man fan, but after reading Tim Seeley write Injustice vs Masters of the Universe... I was oddly excited to check out this mini. I read all about the deep dives he makes to German He-man casette tapes, and as a fan of other things, I can definitely appreciate that hustle. I actually really liked this. Seeley isn't bad when he writes about something he actually likes (which apparently isn't Nightwing, Green Lanterns, Hellblazer, Shatterstar, etc.) |

An average Hellblazer story that does nothing to want to stand out. It was neither terrible or good. Just kind of a thing that exists. One thing that has been in this entire run and never really bothered me till now is the censorship of cursing. Sure, you can take a guess and find out pretty easy what he is saying, but this is an adult series. How can other DC books have gore and adult themes in Rebirth, yet the former Vertigo series gets harmless curses censored? Someone please fix this. |

SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS Wally has his own Scarlet Twilight and I predicted it from the first issue. As expected the response is quite wild, but this issue is not entirely without merit. It does show a dark look at mental illness, and it isn't like the seeds weren't planted since Rebirth. What sucks is the execution. I feel like Wally snapping and doing it of his own free will would have been a lot heavier, instead he sees he isn't alone and loses control of the speed force, which makes it look like an accident and that he hates the idea of other people sharing similar pain. Also, instead of looking to his friends for help and explaining that he didn't mean it... he executes an overly convoluted plan that really hurts the brain to follow, it is so comic booky and ridiculous. So, in the end you are left with a comic that seesaws between feeling like heavy commentary on mental illness and also feeling like a shock comic in the style of Death of Superman or Emerald Twilight. So, the good news thinking of it as the latter is that Emerald Twilight did not ruin Hal Jordan as a character but instead lead to a great redemption arc during his time as The Spectre and then lead into his most famous run to date. So if you are a Wally fan, remember not all hope for the character is lost. |

This book quickly stepped into a very poor man's Alan Moore to me. The narration tries so hard to be profound, yet says nothing. Bruce Banner's dad is entirely unsympathetic which is not a sign of a good character, even contradicting himself at times by worrying about his wife's health and later faceplanting her. |

Which are you, Bruce? Biblical allegory I read on wikipedia 1 or 2? Are you man or monster? Who are you? Who am I? Do I sound profound right now or do I sound profound right now? What do you mean I am just verbosely talking about good or evil and spending a whole issue on it? Gamma Radiation is science, until it isn't. The title of the story is the setting of the final page. PSHEW that is the sound of your puny and feeble mind exploding because of my pure faux depth. Don't think about how little actually happened, just listen to the pretentious narrator who is doing his best Alan Moore but without being Alan Moore and shower me in 10s |

I suppose if you are a fan of the current direction of Marvel comics, you will probably like this. It will do very little to win anyone else over. Also does anyone else realize the cliffhanger is just "Invasion!" which is a little suspicious since this one is called "Incoming!"? |
