A Righteous Thirst for Vengeance #1

Feb 3, 2023

This was an awesome opening issue. I love that Remender went super light on dialogue, letting the story essentially tell itself through Araujo's brilliant artwork. You could sense the emotions and tension even though very little was actually being said. I'm very intrigued to see where this story will go, but this was an extremely solid start.

A Righteous Thirst for Vengeance #2

Remender is usually known for weaving the main character's inner thoughts through each issue in the form of journal entry-like narration. This mostly silent comic is a change from the norm for him, but gosh am I loving it. The art is so on point, and the story that Remender is crafting is suspenseful and mysterious. I love being dropped little hints of who our main character is and what his past is like without being spoon-fed everything. Another brilliant issue.

Remender's use of silence throughout this series has been nothing short of masterful. After the most violent and action-packed issue of the series, we get the calmest and quietest of issues, and it works so dang well. Nothing much happens, but it's a much-deserved reprieve for Sonny and Xavier (even though we know it won't last), and it provides a meaningful opportunity for us to just take a break and enjoy their relationship. Araujo's art is brilliant here, as it has been all series.

This was a good issue, Gillen writes these one-shots well. I enjoy the focus on sole characters and delving into their motivations and pasts, but unfortunately this one was brought down by sub-par art.

This was bloody incredible. What an event. I think my favourite part was the Progenitor judging each individual panel by panel. Boy did Matt Murdock's ever get me right in the feels... Doom's was perfectly spot on, and Miles Morales' was absolutely delightful. Would've been cool to see more characters judged. Like maybe Moon Knight. Would have loved to see whether he'd be judged as one person or three.

Not really sure why this got the amount of hate it did. It wasn't the best thing I've ever read, and sure there was a notable lack of Ultron in a supposedly Ultron-centric story, but I thought it was perfectly fine, and I even thought the ending was quite good, albeit a little confusing in the last few pages. Overall, an entertaining read.

There was definitely too much going on here, and while I did find the dialogue a bit busy, I didn't think it was as terrible as some people seemed to. Not on par with Remender's work on Uncanny Avengers, but far from the worst thing I've read. The art was quite good too. Overall, not a bad start.

I thought Spider-Man was incredibly well-written in this issue; I actually laughed out loud at a couple lines. Dodson's art was a slight step down from Kubert and Yu's, but still pretty decent. I'm not sure I understand all the hate this event got. It's really not bad at all. May not be up to Remender's usual quality, but it's still enjoyable for what it is. Side note: Every cover for this series so far has been astonishingly good. Jim Cheung has been absolutely knocking it out of the park.

This was utterly phenomenal. Rick Remender was already one of my favourite writers as I went into this, so I knew it was going to be good, but I didn't expect it to be THIS good. I suppose it helped that two of my all-time favourite artists also teamed up to draw this gorgeous book. Seriously...Jerome Opeña and Pepe Larraz on the same project?! That's a comic book lover's wet dream. Remender delivered a powerful story about guilt, self-loathing, and what it means to be human, and it will go down as one of my favourite comics ever.

Batman: One Bad Day (2022): The Riddler #1

Feb 27, 2024

This was utterly spectacular. As someone who wasn't a fan of most of King's Batman run, I could not have been more pleasantly surprised that he crafted such a genuinely enthralling Batman story here. King made Riddler into a seriously terrifying villain and this is probably my new favourite Riddler story ever. That ending was just...so good. SO good. And Mitch Gerads' art was nothing short of perfect. Tom King haters are always gonna hate, and Batman purists who can't handle the slightest alteration from their perception of what the Dark Knight should be are gonna be thoroughly triggered by this story, but as for me, this will go down as one of my favourite Batman comics ever and another absolute masterpiece from King.

7.0
Batman: One Bad Day (2022): Two-Face #1

Feb 28, 2024

This wasn't bad, but it wasn't great either. I actually was really enjoying both the art and the writing for the first two thirds, but both seemed to fall off a bit towards the end. There were a few things that bugged me: first, Harvey Dent's Dad was supposed to be 88, but the way Fernandez drew him made him look like he was in his fifties. I know this isn't really a big deal in the grand scheme, but I couldn't help but be bothered by it. Second, Batman's plan for dealing with the balloons filled with toxic gas was to throw a batarang at the glass ceiling directly above all of said balloons? I mean...are you kidding Tamaki? That might have been the thing that took me out of this book the most. Thirdly, I didn't really get the "one bad day" vibes from this one. As a collection of stories that are supposed to be in the same vein as The Killing Joke, this one just didn't seem to fit. Tom King did such a good job with the Riddler story, crafting a brilliant homage to Alan Moore's classic work, but this just seemed like a generic, standalone Two-Face story that wasn't inspired by anything. Overall, I still somewhat enjoyed this story and found it mildly entertaining, but it was certainly not without its problems.

1.5
Batman: One Bad Day (2022): The Penguin #1

Feb 29, 2024

This was hot garbage. There was honestly so much wrong with this story it would take way too long to list it all. The only reason this story gets a half point is because the art wasn't completely horrendous. The writing was atrocious, when the story wasn't bland it was just plain ridiculous, and the art was lazy and just plain not good enough, which is disappointing because I've loved some of Camuncoli's other work, especially Green Valley. There's more I could say, but I wasted enough time reading this that I don't want to waste any more reviewing it.

9.0
Batman: One Bad Day (2022): Mr. Freeze #1

Mar 2, 2024

Though it felt a tad rushed at times and the ending was a little anti-climactic, I genuinely enjoyed this one. Duggan did a good job here. I had a good laugh at a couple of the jokes, and the writing was generally pretty good with only a couple minor exceptions. Didn't quite understand the bit about Victor admitting that he likes his life now and that he likes Nora being on ice because it means they don't fight anymore. I liked Batman calling Victor out for keeping Nora alive for selfish reasons, but Victor is supposed to genuinely love Nora and be working to cure her, otherwise...if he likes his life so much now and loves having a wife who he doesn't have to fight with or worry about...why keep her alive? So that bit didn't really make sense. It felt like Duggan couldn't decide whether to do classic Mr. Freeze or change things up, so we got a kind of weird hybrid where he's a borderline abusive husband but also loves her but he's glad she's frozen but also he's trying to save her. Oh well. These problems didn't bug me nearly as much as the ridiculousness in John Ridley's terrible Penguin story. So this one gets a 9/10 for decent writing and absolutely STELLAR artwork from Matteo Scalera. Seriously, this was a gorgeously drawn book.

7.5
Batman: One Bad Day (2022): Catwoman #1

Mar 5, 2024

This was just okay. The art was good, but the writing was so-so. Honestly the story just felt kind of bland. Not a lot happened, not a ton of depth. Just a run-of-the-mill Catwoman tale with a little bit of personal backstory. I feel like there was an opportunity here to go deeper into Selina's motivations and drive behind who she is and what she does but it was mostly missed and we got a fairly surface-level story. Good art from McKelvie was the best part of this in my opinion.

9.5
Batman: One Bad Day (2022): Bane #1

Mar 5, 2024

You know what, I actually really enjoyed this. Way more than I thought I would! Williamson put a clever spin on the "one bad day" idea; rather than focusing on the day that made Bane into a villain, he chose instead to turn the day Bane beat the Batman into the one bad day that ruined him thereafter. It was a surprisingly heartfelt redemption story for Bane, and I actually quite appreciated it. Howard Porter dished out some terrific art too, perhaps with the exception of that one fight scene with the microscopicly small panels. Overall, a great entry and one of my favourites of this series so far.

10
Batman: One Bad Day (2022): Clayface #1

Mar 7, 2024

This was absolutely stunning. Haunting, tragic, flat out brilliant. This story pulled me in little by little until I couldn't break free and it completely captivated me. This is without a doubt the best Clayface story I have ever read. Kelly and Lanzing did an amazing job of crafting an engrossing new tale that perfectly pays homage to the story that inspired this series of one-shots. I absolutely loved the way they utilized the auditon scene from the Killing Joke and how even some of the panels and art towards the end were reminiscent of that book's final scene. This is easily my second favourite of these One Bad Day stories, ranking VERY close behind King's Riddler. Oh, and Xermanico's art was absolutely PERFECT for this story. Bravo.

8.5
Batman: One Bad Day (2022): Ra's Al Ghul #1

Mar 9, 2024

This was a pretty good story. Ra's Al Ghul isn't anywhere close to my favourite Batman villain, but this was a well-written story and I got a good amount of enjoyment out of it. Wasn't a big fan of how on-the-nose Taylor's climate change messaging was if I'm being honest...but that aside, I still enjoyed this for what it was. Ivan Reis brought his 'A' game with his art so it was a joy to look at too. Overall this was a decent entry in this line of stories and I'm happy to say that this whole One Bad Day project was, in my opinion, a big success and well worth anyone's time and money.

Batman: Three Jokers (2020) #1

Jun 26, 2023

Loved it. A very solid start. Love all the flashback panels with the different colouring. Great choice to use Barbara and Jason as the main side characters for this story, as they're the ones who have been left most damaged by the Joker. I'm into this mystery and excited to see where it goes. Jason Fabok provides some absolutely top knotch art too. Loved the callback to Killing Joke in the opening rainy panels.

9.5
Batman: Three Jokers (2020) #2

Jun 27, 2023

Jason Fabok's art is outstanding in this series. I'm thoroughly enjoying this story, although I will say...I really dislike when Joker's jokes are this level of cheesy. Like, who would find that funny? Absolutely nobody. Part of the appeal of the Joker is that he is incredibly clever and witty and would actually be genuinely funny if he wasn't so sadistic and terrifying. Like in Killing Joke he even made Batman laugh, but the octopus joke in this issue was just...really bad. And then the Joe Chill joke was even worse. That's my only gripe, and granted it is a small one, but it's one that bugs me. Otherwise, great issue.

Bullseye just gave up and started crying? Pretty stupid resolution if you ask me. And Black Widow being used as a damsel in distress is also really dumb. This is one comic that doesn't hold up today. Only saving grace is Miller's art.

A great start! Brubaker picks up right where Bendis left off and sets the stage for a tense arc. Bold move doing what he did in his very first issue too...not sure if it's going to last, but it was a shocking moment executed well nonetheless. Looking forward to seeing where this goes. Artwork is great too.

I really enjoyed this. It was a nice break from the action, and Foggy's introspection about his and Matt's relationship was both poignant and touching. Even when the action is dialed down, Brubaker's consistently solid writing keeps me hooked. I'm absolutely loving this run.

Not gonna lie, I'm getting rather tired of this Sons of the Serpent storyline and the white supremacist super villain group in general. Their motives are one-dimensional, their power and influence is unrealistically far-reaching, and the story itself is growing far too convoluted and outlandish. So far this is a pretty lackluster follow-up to the long Bullseye setup.

Incredible start. Everything that you love about Hickman's storytelling and worldbuilding paired with absolutely breathtaking artwork from Mike Huddleston. I swear it's gonna take me forever to finish this book cause every panel is a work of art that I have to pause and admire. There are, of course, a lot of Hickman's signature infographics and high-concept stuff that doesn't make a ton of sense right out of the gate but almost certainly will down the road, but unless this is your first Jonathan Hickman book (which would be a travesty), then this likely won't come as a big surprise, and if you're a fan of Hickman, then you probably love that crap.

Mar 18, 2023

This issue was amazing, not sure why it isn't one of the highest rated of the series. Such a powerful issue, and once again Gillen does a tremendous job flipping scenes/themes from LOTR on their head and turning them into emotional gut punches. Stephanie Hans' art throughout this series has also been so consistently awesome. It takes me so long to get through these issues cause I often have to pause and just admire the art.

7.0
Die #19

Mar 18, 2023

This issue was a bit of a disappointment as the penultimate chapter in an otherwise captivating series. For starters, yes...the woke stuff was pretty on the nose. I can handle a bit of it cause that's just the world we live in so I've come to expect certain writers (Gillen especially) infusing that kind of thing into their stories, but this was a bit too much for me. Using the wardrobe from Narnia as a metaphor for "coming out of the closet" goes against pretty much everything C.S. Lewis intended those books to be about. I might've rated this issue lower, but Stephanie Hans killed it with the art (again) and this series has been stellar enough overall to warrant a pass on a solitary instance of disappointing dialogue and narrative choices. Here's hoping that Gillen and Hans bounce back and stick the landing with the finale!

Well, they did it. They stuck the landing. This was about as close to a perfect conclusion as I could've imagined. I was a little worried after the last issue, but this final chapter provided a thoroughly satisfying end to the story. As an aside, this series boasts perhaps the best gallery of variant covers I have ever seen. What a visual feast.

Honestly... I've absolutely loved X of Swords so far. But this... this was bad. It's not just that it was weird... it was just, not good at all. The tone didn't match any of what we've seen so far. The kickoff of the tournament was incredibly anticlimactic. Why was Jubilee even there? And a wedding instead of a sword fight? What the f. Only saving grace is Noto's art.

I'm not sure I buy Marnie's backstory about being a love interest of Steve Rogers. Just seems weird to all of a sudden decide that she was a big part of a major character's history but was never once seen or referenced until now. That kind of thing creates continuity nightmares. That said, I'm still enjoying how Taylor writes Spidey, so I'm willing to suspend my disbelief.

Inferno (2021) #2

Apr 27, 2022

"Would you like for me to tell you how it's going to go?" Honestly one of the most badass lines I've ever read in comics. I'm absolutely loving this. The tension is so thick, Hickman is a master at his craft. But we all knew that already. This is just him doing what he does.

Jonathan Hickman has given the X-Men their best treatment in decades. He will be sorely missed. Hopefully the continuing X-writers will carry the torch well. Inferno's only flaw was it's length. I wanted more, but boy am I thankful for what I got.

I gotta be honest, though I think Black Bolt is a cool character, I've never really given a crap about the Inhumans, but I heard good things about this story so I figured I'd give it a shot, and boy am I glad I did. Jenkins' script is perfect, and Jae Lee's art is as gorgeous as it is haunting. Not really sure what to expect from this book but one issue in I am already totally invested.

Inhumans (1998) #9

Sep 12, 2022

Wow... this issue was a masterpiece. Jenkins is doing a brilliant job shining a spotlight on different characters each issue while the conflict rages on in the background. This is a story about humanity and Inhumanity, and what defines each of them. It's a story about what makes humans different from Inhumans, but also about what unites them, and whether the similarities or the differences between them are more important. Such brilliant work from Jenkins, and Lee's art is still perfect for this story.

Moon Knight (1980) #27

Dec 9, 2022

This was a brilliant issue. It's a shame that Steven Grant didn't work on Moon Knight more, cause his writing is incredible! And how great is it that he shares a name with the character he's writing? What are the odds? Grant's narration from Marc/Steven/Jake's perspective was so well done; it was everything I love about Moon Knight as a character. I don't normally write reviews for these older issues but I had to for this one. Excellent issue, one of my favourites of the 80s era MK run.

The writing here is a significant step down from Charlie Huston's, and the art isn't great either. Hoping both improve, but not a very promising start to Benson's run. Also, I couldn't care less about Frenchie and his boyfriend at this point. I really hope there's a point to continuing to keep them around, cause so far it just seems like their only purpose is to be the token gay characters who are just kinda there but add nothing of substance to the story.

Better, but not by much. The art still kinda sucks. It's hard to distinguish between some characters, and it doesn't help that Benson's script seems a bit all over the place at times, jumping to a different scene almosy every panel on some pages.

That's it. This honestly hurts...I love Moon Knight. He's my favourite Marvel character besides Daredevi, so to read this hot garbage has been truly painful. I've tried to be generous with my ratings, but I can't do it anymore. I have to own up to how much this sucks. Besides the art, which is STILL terrible, the writing has just gotten utterly and completely lazy. You're gonna tell me Moon Knight is standing in the middle of the entire Thunderbolts crew and a dozen S.H.I.E.L.D. agents, and he somehow manages to sneak down a manhole unseen? Give me an actual break. The Benson and Texiera run on Moon Knight is easily the worst in the character's history, which is truly sad cause I was loving the Huston and Finch arcs.

Art is significantly better, story is somewhat interesting but I'm not convinced it's a very good Moon Knight story yet. Benson still has a bad habit of jumping around without warning and no real indication of where we are. It'd be nice if we had location and time markers in the first panel after a jump like many writers include. That would make things a lot easier to follow.

Why feature the Punisher on two straight covers only to him appear in literally only 2-3 panels between both issues? An absolutely BS marketing tactic that I'm sure pissed off more than a few folks who were duped into buying these issues hoping for a Moon Knight/Punisher showdown. That aside, this issue was actually quite good on its own merit. The art was honestly awesome, and the story was way more coherent and was a lot easier to follow.

In a completely unexpected turn of events, I'm absolutely gobsmacked to declare that...I loved this issue. Somehow, virtually everything about this issue worked for me. The art, the action, the dialogue, the story...where the heck did this come from Benson?! And why the heck couldn't all of your previous work on Moon Knight have been even HALF this good?!? My only minor gripe with this issue is the same gripe as I've had with this whole arc so far, and that is that it still doesn't really fully feel like a Moon Knight story, or at least you could swap out Jake's name for Clint or Bucky or something and it would work exactly the same. So as much as I loved this issue, I would still really love to get this Moon Knight run back to being an actual Moon Knight run again. With only two issues to go, here's hoping Benson is able to keep things this quality and actually finish strong after an otherwise terrible run.

Moon Knight (2006) #29

Nov 12, 2023

Not a bad issue overall, but honestly...the Punisher using a wig and dress to pose as a woman is just about the dumbest and most un-Punisher-like thing I've ever seen. Like they wouldn't know he was a man the second they saw him. Punisher would've just come in shooting. Also, the art was worse than in the previous three issues for whatever reason. I can't quite put my finger on why, but it just seemed like it took a step down.

Moon Knight (2006) #30

Nov 12, 2023

Well, it wasn't horrible, it just wasn't great. It may not even have been good. It just...was. I don't really understand the purpose of this entire arc. Benson never really justified Moon Knight's or the Punisher's presence in Mexico. What was the point of the Toltec? It was teased for a few issues and then...no big showdown? Just some interesting creative choices. The art was a bit better here than last issue at least. Disappointed that Benson didn't manage to stick the landing after a fantastic third issue of this arc, but I suppose I shouldn't really be all that surprised considering the rest of his run was mostly either incoherent or just plain boring.

After all, this is a book named after them. I feel like the Secret Warriors were only ever supporting characters in this Nick Fury story. But either way, it was a great series with lots of high points along the way.

Sentry (2000) #1

Sep 22, 2023

Man, something about Jenkins' writing really does it for me. This was a hell of a first issue. The creative team that killed it with the brilliant 12-issue Inhumans story is back with a strange and haunting tale about a guy named Bob who may or may not have been a superhero once upon a time, but definitely is having a real rough go of things right now. I'm interested to see how this plays out. I know a bit about Sentry from having seen him pop up in other comics but I wanted to read his origin. I can't say this is what I expected, but so far I'm definitely into it. Jae Lee's art is perfect for the story, and Jenkins does a tremendous job going back and forth between the hoaky golden-age comic panels and Jae Lee's haunting artwork in the present-day. The contrast is unsettling and creates a sense of looming terror that makes the skin crawl as the Void is teased. Overall, a great first issue.

I'm so into this it's insane. What a brilliant mystery. I applaud Jenkins for his ingenuity in introducing a new character like this. He's executing it flawlessly. Also, Spider-Man looking at the photo and seeing nothing was such a great and eery touch. Gave me serious Westworld vibes. "Doesn't look like anything to me..."

For those who may be confused, this isn't the end of the story. It doesn't just end on this massive cliffhanger. However, I will say it is a curious creative choice to finish the story in a series of pseudo-oneshots, but Jenkins has been absolutely killing it so far that I'm completely willing to give him the benefit of the doubt that he knows what he's doing. On its own though, this issue was another solid piece of what has been an absolutely incredible story so far. Very much looking forward to the climax of this tale.

This is such an incredible opening issue. Definitely throws a lot at you all at once, but Remender assumes his readers are smart enough to be able to put things together eventually based on the context without having to bog his writing down with exposition explaining what everything means, which I actually really like. And I cannot say enough good things about the art. Jerome Opena is one of my favourite artists, and this is quite easily his best work. What a phenomenal debut issue.

Dawn's Mom is a giant B. I've decided. It's not often that I get legitimately angry at fictional characters in comic books...the only other time was when Miles Morales' friend Ganke spilled his secret identity to Goldballs just to suck up to him. But Dawn's Mom being cold and super rude to her after abandoning her and her sister and Dad when they were kids for no good reason and then refusing to donate blood to save Dawn's life when she's literally one of the only people who can and instead just walking away?!? Ffs. I coulda slapped her saggy old face right off the page. Frustrations with Dawn's Mom aside, this was an okay issue. The monsters were weird and felt a bit out of place in the story, even one as whacky as this one. Spider-Man showing up didn't really seem necessary either, although I did like the "With cosmic power comes cosmic responsibility" line. Great art and colours from the Allred team as per usual.

I'm not gonna lie, I'm feeling really conflicted about the decision to leave holo-Dawn on the planet of light people. I mean...she had all of Dawn's memories and knowledge, I feel like she should've been less okay with staying behind and "living" out her days as a hologram, and I feel like the Surfer and the real Dawn should've been less okay with leaving her. Maybe I'm overthinking this, but there's just something that doesn't sit right with me about some version of Dawn never getting to see the Surfer or her family or homeworld ever again, even if she's just a hologram with Dawn's memories. Other than that, this issue continues this series' trend of being a thoroughly engaging and entertaining story.

Bergera absolutely knocked it out of the park and produced a visual feast on every page. And what a powerful, poignant story Spurrier crafted here. A story about time, family, life, and love. Beautiful. Simply beautiful. I will 100% be returning to this book again in the future, and again and again and again. It was moving, it was exciting, it was thought-provoking...it was as close to perfect as a comic book gets. Bravo.

Strange Academy (2020) #1

Feb 17, 2024

This was a ton of fun. Definitely gives off a Harry Potter meets New Mutants kind of vibe, so not something wholly original, but it was executed well in my opinion. Skottie Young did a decent job of introducing a lot of new characters at once, and I'm sure they'll all have their chance to shine in the coming issues so we can get to know them better. The real MVP here though is Humberto Ramos with his absolutely stunning artwork. He has never been better. Every panel is a masterpiece, and I'm so glad to know that he pencils the entirety of Strange Academy from start to finish. All in all, this was a near perfect start and I can't wait to get to know these characters and see where this strange story goes.

It all comes to a head. What a tense showdown between Adam and Alanna. Gerads and Shaner's art throughout this series have been nothing short of masterful. It's incredibly satisfying to read a comic where the writing and art complement each other so well and are up to the same high standard.

10
Strange Adventures (2020) #12

Feb 24, 2024

As someone who has never read an Adam Strange comic prior to this one, I have to say...I absolutely loved this. I know a lot of people have accused King of character assassination and just making Adam Strange into a villain, but isn't the point of DC black label books that the creators can do whatever they want with the characters and the story? It seems like King made an effort to pay homage to Adam Strange comics of the past while crafting a story that was new and different, and I thought it was fantastic. I love the way King told this story with contrasting art and dialogue between the flashbacks and the events unfolding in the present. Doc Shaner drawing the final panel that was a copy of the very first one drawn by Mitch Gerads was a brilliant way to drive home Alanna's point that our lives are fictions that we tell other people, praying that they don't find out we made them up. Shaner's art throughout the book was crisper, cleaner, and painted an idealistic view of past events, while Gerads' art was grittier and more raw, illustrating the difference between people's perception of what happened and what really happened. Even the dialogue reflected this contrast, with the present-day dialogue being more grounded and realistic and the past events dialogue sounding more like something out of a silver-age comic. This story-telling device worked brilliantly in my opinion and was one of my favourite parts of the book. This is definitely going to go down as one of my favourites of King's works. This is the kind of story that will stick with me for a long time. As an aside, Aleea now being the one quizzing Mr. Terrific instead of his robots was a surprisingly powerful moment that I thoroughly appreciated.

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow #4

Sep 4, 2022

Honestly, this to me is pure literary art. Tom King has written some duds to he sure, but he has also written some absolute masterpieces, and this is shaping up to be one of them. Some may find the narration a tad too wordy, but personally I love it. It adds so much to the emotional resonance of the story and allows you to see deeper into Supergirl's character; what makes her who she is. King's line about her restraint really got me, that was amazing. Bilquis Evely is matching King's powerful script with some of the most gorgeous artwork I've seen. This book is a true work of art, both in visuals and in the story.

Wow... I did not except that to be as good as it was. It was emotional, funny, poignant, and brilliantly drawn by Nick Dragotta. I find Superman origin comics to be generally cliché, but this perfectly illustrated both Clark's and his parents' struggles in his growing up as an American alien.

Man, two issues in and I'm absolutely loving everything about this series. Landis nails Clark's struggle growing up as a super-powered kid, and the burden of responsibility he feels clashing with the desire to just be a normal kid. Brilliant script, and the art was awesome too! Reminiscent of John Paul Leon's work in my opinion.

Joelle Jones nails it with the art in this issue. I'm loving Landis' writing too. Surprisingly hilarious. I laughed out loud at a couple lines. This book is wowing me with each issue, and I cannot wait to see what's next.

Superman: American Alien #4

Oct 8, 2022

*Mild spoilers* I kid you not, that was one of the best comics I have ever read in my life. Landis wrote Lex Luthor perfectly here. His smug narcissism, his vision for the world, perfect. And I LOVED Dick Grayson working his detective skills on Clark, and their whole subsequent conversation. "Fear needs Hope." Absolute GOLD. And Batman's appearance... jeez. This issue had it all. Honestly, to say I'm pleasantly surprised by this series is a gross understatement. This book has blown me away at every turn. Landis has an incredible voice for these characters and this batch of artists is churning up some of the most gorgeous work I've seen. Jae Lee absolutely kills it on this issue. I can't say enough good things about this series...it's just so, SO good.

Superman: American Alien #5

Oct 9, 2022

Yet another perfect issue in Max Landis' incredible Superman series. I honestly can't say enough good things about this series; it's easily one of the best things I've ever read. Francis Manapul's art here is nothing short of brilliant, further solidifying this book as boasting one of the best teams of artists of any single volume book.

Superman: American Alien #6

Another great issue. Not quite as strong as the rest, but still thoroughly enjoyable. It's baffling to me that a comic about Clark Kent can be so freaking entertaining. He hardly did any superhero stuff in this issue...mostly just talked with friends the whole time. But did I love it? Absolutely. Sad that there's only one issue left of this masterpiece of a series.

10
Superman: American Alien #7

Oct 9, 2022

Well, it was a masterpiece. This series was an absolute masterpiece from start to finish. It ends with a bang in a brutal street brawl between Superman and Lobo. At first, I wasn't convinced Jock's gritty art would fit the tone of a Superman comic, but them when the fighting started...man oh man. I seriously can't believe how good this series was and I will be rereading it many times over in the future. This will go down as one of my all time favourite books. Bravo Mr. Landis, bravo.

This was a strange (no pun intended) change in pace and tone for Moore's unbelievably brilliant Swamp Thing run. I can see how this arc will lead to Swamp Thing getting back to earth, but it just seems like a pretty hard left turn from where we left off. Nowhere near a bad issue, just not up to Moore's usual almost flawless standard.

9.0
Swamp Thing (1982) #58

Apr 8, 2024

Big step up from the last issue, but still missing the feel of the rest of Moore's run so far. Swamp Thing belongs on earth doing Swampy things! I miss the horror vibe too, though as I understand it, Moore dialed back the horror-y stuff for the last arc to respect artist Rick Veitch who didn't want to draw anything too grotesque. Kinda disappointing for us readers, but good of Moore I guess.

7.5
Swamp Thing (1982) #59

Obviously this issue suffered due to the simple fact that it wasn't written by Alan Moore. That said, Bissette actually did an okay job here. The story felt a little out of place in the context of what's been going on with Swamp Thing on Rann, but it was by no means a bad issue.

Once again, there's a slight inconsistency in how Muspelheim fire works. A couple issues ago, Aaron wrote that only fire goblin blood could neutralize the effects of Muspelheim fire, but here, War Thor just makes it rain a whole bunch of regular ol' H2O and the fires go out. It doesn't completely take me out of the story, but it would be nice for Aaron to not write stuff that he's just going to contradict himself on shortly after. Other than that, this was another entertaining issue.

I really, really do not get what the 1 and 2 star reviewers are whining and raging about. Sure the Hela twist wasn't really all that twisty, and the whisper reveal may not have blown anyone's socks off, but this was still a thoroughly satisfying conclusion to the Unworthy Thor arc. A lot of people seem triggered that Thor didn't end up picking up the hammer, but that was kind of the whole point of the arc... I personally felt like his choice not to pick it up was a powerful moment of Thor letting go of his pride and ego and just accepting himself for who he is on the inside (aww <3), realizing that his identity is not found in a hammer, especially one that belonged to a Thor from another universe. Besides, we all know he's going to get another hammer at some point, so everybody just calm to Hel down already. And somehow a few people are even complaining about the art?? How can you possibly find fault in Olivier Coipel's incredible art in this issue? The full double-page splash early in the issue was jaw-droppingly stunning. Overall, this was a thoroughly enjoyable arc that ended satisfyingly, tied up several mysteries, and set us up for more excitement ahead with War Thor.

Unfortunately, while I've loved most of this run so far, this issue suffers heavily from Esad Ribic not being on the art and Sam Humphries coming on as a writer. You can feel Humphries' influence on the script, and it's just not on the same level as what came before. It's still Hickman's story so it's certainly not terrible, but it's a noticeable shift.

Ultimate Comics: Ultimates #11

I don't know man...I'm just really not feeling this change in writing style, and the art is doing absolutely nothing for me. Going from Ribic's masterful work to this is supremely disappointing.

6.5
Ultimate Comics: Ultimates #12

Aug 31, 2023

This book really fell off after Hickman and Ribic handed the reins to Humphries and whoever the hell drew these last few issues. An anticlimactic end to what was once an epic series. The Maker was outsmarted and defeated relatively easily after being an unstoppable force who was always 10 steps ahead every other time. Too bad Hickman couldn't have carried this run to a satisfying resolution.

There's a tad too much sience-y mumbo jumbo in this for my taste, and not in the cool Jonathan Hickman way (maybe Ewing needs to throw in a few Hickman-esque infographics to help dullards like me follow what's going on?) Also not a fan of how each character is reintroduced every single issue with a large text info dump about their name, alias, and powers. But the art is incredible and the story is intriguing so let's see what happens.

I liked this a lot. This might have been my favourite issue of this run so far. There wasn't too much going on, it felt more focused, and the dialogue was great. Christian Ward did a great job filling in on art; I usually love his stuff, and although there were a couple of panels that weren't up to his usual standards, overall he did a great job. Drawing cosmic comics is his bread and butter and he was well suited for this series.

A bombastic end to an epic story. Took an odd turn when the tournament began, but this finale was the showdown I think we were all hoping for. And good Lord was Pepe Larraz ever born to draw X-Men comics.

I know most people didn't like this issue because it was mostly a retelling of a story we've already heard with a lot of recycled art, but something about hearing it from Genesis, knowing that we're finally getting the whole picture, an accurate version of the story, now with a lot more context... I found it incredibly appealing. For me, it hit different than the first times.

X-Men (2021) #17

Jun 5, 2023

Why oh WHY could the rest of this run not live up to these last three issues?! If the story was on this level from the beginning, it would be on par with Immortal X-Men and X-Men: Red in terms of quality. What an absolutely brilliant 3-issue arc. Everything was incredible, but I have to give another shout out to Joshua Cassara's artwork. Even though a few smaller panels in this issue seemed like they were a tad rushed, it was still some of the best art I've seen. *SPOILER ALERT* That unexpected reunion between Synch and Wolverine was low-key one of my favourite moments of the Krakoan era so far. What a beautiful moment.

I seriously can't get enough of the politics of the Krakoan era. I'm consistently amazed by how often I can be utterly captivated by a comic that consists almost entirely of people sitting around a table talking. But I guess that's what great writers like Hickman, Ewing, and Gillen do. What a time to be an X-Men fan.

I can't say I didn't enjoy this. Magneto is acting weird, but I assume there's a reason for that that will soon be revealed. I think I like the art? But I find it a bit lacking compared to the many other stellar artists we've been treated to throughout the various X books.

X-Men: The Trial of Magneto (2021) #3

Kaiju...? Where in the heck did that come from? And why? Just... why? This issue made very little sense and didn't seem to advance the story much at all. They could have just showed the Scarlet Witch stuff and left out the nonsensical anime battle. A 7/10 is probably generous for this issue but I'm still enjoying this book overall so, there you go.

X-Men: The Trial of Magneto (2021) #4

Apr 13, 2022

I feel like this series should be titled "The Death of Wanda Maximoff" or something instead of "Trial of Magneto". The latter seems a tad misleading for how much Magneto is actually in this story. Also, I feel like Williams was on a time crunch when she wrote this issue. Everything feels sloppily thrown together. There are some cool moments, but the pacing kept me from enjoying them.

9.0
X-Men: The Trial of Magneto (2021) #5

Apr 13, 2022

You know what? This was an enjoyable issue. It feels like Williams knew exactly how she wanted to end this series from the beginning (and I will say, it was actually quite a good concept), but it just felt like she had no idea how to connect the dots and get us to the desired ending smoothly. But at the end of the day, despite an extremely messy couple issues in the middle, this series managed to end strong. I really like Wanda's redemption here. And I finally get the title now! TRIAL of Magneto, but not that kind of trial. Clever clever. I still don't like it. This was a book about Wanda and the title should've been something more Wanda-centric. Making it about Magneto was misleading from the start and I think contributed to people's disappointed with what was delivered compared to what they expected. Overall, not a bad series in my opinion. Not a good one, but not a bad one.
