This might be the first misstep in Greg Pak's run, but it's not entirely his fault. I never realized how important Aaron Kuder's art was to my enjoyment of this book until this issue in which he shared penciling duties. The other art wasn't bad, just jarring when I got to those pages. The Doomsday part of the book was good. The other part felt like filler, though.

This series remains strong. It's an interesting study into what makes us human, what is free will, and how our choices impact us. I wanted a little more story progression, but what was there was very good. The clean art tells the story as much as the dialogue does and is a perfect match for this series.

All-New X-Factor #5

This was a fantastic issue. Peter David's characterization was spot on. Danger, the character, was written with stone-faced humor that pulled the story in the right direction without ever being silly. We are quickly learning who these people are and learning to care about them in the context of a team. My only small complaint was the art during the final scene. It was difficult to tell what was the Magus and what was Warlock. To be fair to Di Giandomenico, they are supposed to look similar, but there were a few indecipherable panels. Otherwise, great issue!

All-New X-Factor #6
April 12, 2014

I've enjoyed this volume of All-New X-Factor until this issue. The good? I still find Danger interesting and funny. The art is good, despite the bug eyes of their costumes. The bad? Most of the rest. The worst part of the issue was the insufferable dialogue of The Magus. The fact that the team just leaves him there was just not realistic. There's a big building and they "couldn't make a dent in it". Really? Doug didn't know he had a piece of Warlock, but then the next moment can read the flow and locate him. Really? I'm not even a Gambit fan, but I find it irritating that he is a non-factor in this book. He could be anyone at this point and make the same impact.
I wasn't sure about this book when it started, and it grew on me. With one issue that goodwill ran out the door.

First, why are they saying this issue is monumental? It's not surprising any X-Title got to issue 25. There were some interesting pieces in this hodgepodge, but there were, ahem, monumental fails as well. I like the overarching Beast and mystery guest dialogue, but so much of the rest was just throwaway and not the reason I buy the comic.

This was an OK issue. If you didn't know the characters before you read it, you have some background now. There's a clear enough direction. The art does a fine job. The problem is that it's very predictable and generic. This could've come from any writer. To top it off, any first issue that is just a lead-in to an event is a poor first issue, to me.

When a writer thinks himself so much smarter than the reader, you get something like this comic. Not interesting or coherent. Sadly, if he dialed it back and added more content, this could be really interesting.

If I'm being honest, the score of 4 isn't deserved for this issue, but it reflects my feelings on the entire series. Such a pointless and worthless series. I kept going even after I could see it was not good because I had gotten that far, but wow. When King is on, it's good. When he seems like he is too proud of himself, it is this.

Rick Remender crafts another great story for Black Science #5. A new wrinkle was added with a multiverse concept with different versions of the Pillar and the main characters. How Grant deals with knowing who the saboteur is will be interesting in the future. The art fits the book well, but I still have a problem with Scalera making it difficult to be able to distinguish who is who. Overall great issue.

I'm not a big fan of anything, let alone a series, that doesn't really end but only leads you to the next thing the author is doing. The things that were resolved were decent, but he non-ending 32 issues in is quite a disappointment.

Earth 2 #22
April 5, 2014
|

Tom Taylor found a way to put some joy into Earth 2 this month. Whole good, the series has been stuck in a little bit too dark place. The character work with Val, Hawkgirl, and Lois was great. So was the return of Green Lantern. The cliffhanger ending leaves us wanting so much more, in a great way. Nicola Scott proves exceptional as always.

I'm a Sterling Gates fan, but this issue was pretty low quality. Worst of all, it was a 6 issue mini-series that had no ending whatsoever. It just ended saying it would continue in Forever Evil and Justice League. The dialogue was terrible (supposed to be funny?). I've defended this series, but issue 6 was indefensible. I'm pretty disappointed. I hope good things are ahead for the character of Steve Trevor, but this series didn't help his development.

Soule is one of the best writers around and was asked to right this ship before it got off the ground. He did that with moderate success. The story is compelling enough at times, especially the "different tribes/dueling kingdoms" aspect that comes with Lash. That said, I was extremely disappointed to read that Dante had such a predictable powerset (and it's pretty bad that his name also happens to be Dante). I was hoping for the Inhumans to be unique--previous Inhumans sure were. Overall I'm hopeful for the series, and I'll stick around a few issues to see where it goes.

Pretty interesting issue with Cyborg leading the Metal Men against Grid and others. We get to see the dynamic Grid will bring as a nemesis to Cyborg in the future. I did leave with a couple of questions: 1) Cyborg said Atomica infiltrated the JL, but wasn't it the JLA? 2) Dr. Magnus makes a big deal how the Metal Men can die, but he's saying it while bringing them back to life. So what's the difference?

This series is still a strange mixture of new ideas, stale plot, and intriguing possibilities. The plot didn't move much this issue. We still have the Wonder Twins fighting about what they've done. We still have the Justice League fighting The Five (Those are The Five we keeping gearing about, right?). Firestorm is brought in this issue. I'm not sure what to think. He's angry and violent because of his two person matrix, but that's how all of the JL were, so not sure how that's different. At least we see some character development with Clark getting more approachable and Bruce being more analytical.

I wanted JLA to last longer, but I think JLU could be good. This was a mediocre beginning that felt strange because Forever Evil is over, but hasn't been published yet. Supergirl is no longer a Red Lantern, but she is in her book and Red Lanterns. Lemire tried to squeeze a lot in. The art is ok, but just ok. I was excited to see Hawkman taking on Lobo at the end.

April 5, 2014

Cullen Bunn and Gabriel Hernandez Walta have crafted a series worth following. Magneto is exactly how he should be portrayed: a complex, intriguing, driven man who isn't a hero, but isn't exactly a villain, either. The story progresses in a very human way (sorry Erik!), and makes enough progress to pull the reader in.

This series continues to impress. It's the best kind of characterization in that you learn about the series' regulars as the live life (or, in this case, try to survive). The biggest problem I had with this issue is the obvious way our protagonists would be set free and the fact that they don't use that same thing to find out more information. Overall the story flowed and the art was amazing.

Two major events in this issue: 1) Ronin is finally shown with his mask off, and we learn on the last page that he's Blade. 2) The Blue Marvel takes center stage and we learn a ton about his family and the tragic events that have happened.
The problem is that a few cool things happened in a comic that seemed to come out of 1975. Some may enjoy that. For the most part, I'm not one of those people.

I wanted to like a Claremont Nightcrawler book, but it was just ok. The art was decent, except that the females tend to look juvenile. The villain is Trimega. Seriously. Any 12 year old could have brought a similar villain in. Nightcrawler just returned from the dead, yet his interactions with Logan and Amanda lack depth and believability. An example is Amanda saying she hates it when he teleports her. HE JUST CAME BACK FROM THE DEAD! Not enough in the first issue to bring me back next month.

I thought I was buying a continuation of what happened at the Gala, and while in all technicality it is, I had no idea I was buying a fantasy world that is so poorly written. It would have been a 1, but the art was ok. The characters were predictable caricatures of themselves. Typhoid Mary, in particular, read like fan fiction.

Great new arc. Even though it's a Supergirl crossover, it didn't feel forced. I'm so happy to have Atrocitus back. Bleez, though, seemed like a brand new character. That's not the Bleez we've seen. There was also quite a bit of text this issue (dialogue and boxes), which isn't the norm. All in all, great book, though.

What a difference a fresh perspective can make. Aaron Kuder come on board and changes the direction of the series. The plot revolves around Superboy seeing different versions of himself come to track him down to hold him accountable. This dynamic adds interesting wrinkles to the story. Now we want to know if the other Superboys are real, if Jon has it in himself to change, and what the end result will be. Jorge Jimenez does a good job with the art, but it does get slightly Manga-ish at times.

I mean, it seems like it's supposed to be the model of accepting a gay son, but not only was it beyond telegraphed, but the reasons some dads have a problems with their son being gay wasn't represented well. I'm not even saying I agree with those reasons, but it would've been more impactful for me to read if it was more real to how it plays out in real life.

What I liked: The story continues to impress. Instead of a predictable issue 2 of following each character to see more of their reactions to the letters, we get a pleasant narrowing of the narrative. The story takes some interesting twists and turns leaving the reader intrigued, but also unsure of which direction the book will go. Personally, I can't wait for number 3.
Challenges: I like the art style. It's fairly unique and interesting in it's detail. Sometimes, though, it's tough to tell what's happening visually. Not always, but it is a problem in a few panels.

Very good issue. Still not loving art--mostly because sometimes I can't tell what I'm looking at or who the character is. The ideas are pretty detailed and dense, so I have to think hard about who is who and what their story is. But it's also very interesting and emotional. Loving this series.

On the one hand, each issue I love the concepts. On the other hand, keeping track of who is who, what gender they are, and what their sexuality is keeps me from fully understanding what I'm reading. I think the art makes it confusing along with so many of them seemingly LGBTQ+. It's a lot to keep track of and I'm not doing that great. (That is not meant to imply in any way that the LGBTQ+ concepts shouldn't be part of this, but simply that I get lost.)

This was one of the start-up series of the New 52. They tried to stick in characters from the Titans (like Beast Boy and Terra, and more) to get attention for the series. The series had promise, but the characterization wasn't very believable. Read this volume and the story is ok, but it's not special.

Jason Aaron and Esad Ribic continue to create great Thor stories. This issue continues future Thor's battle with Galactus. The cool part of that is seeing Thor hold his own against Galactus. Present day Thor is still battling Roxxon, but they've bought Thor's favorite town of Broxton, OK and are now suing Thor. The book reads very well and the art shows Thor's expressions exactly like they should be. Great issue.

I really dislike that Sue is not only whiney, but seems to only be able to create shields--none if the other things the "regular" Sue has done over the years. I also hated the look of Falcon. This was really good. If I was nitpicking, I'd rate it lower because the dialogue between the teens was so cringy. No 15 and 16 year olds say "15 and a half" or "16 and a half". It took me out of the story and all I could think was Hickman is out of touch. But in the end, it was really good. I don't like the big think near the end, but I understand how it adds tension.

Very enjoyable issue. I love and hate seeing more of Dazzler because I want her to take center stage, but hate seeing her suffer so that Mystique can use her to create mutant hormone. The interactions with the other X-Men team was much more believable than I've seen in ither X-Books. The art did seem to get worse in the last few pages, though.

I literally put the last arc on my 2022 best of list. Then all of a sudden this issue comes out and it's comic booky in the worst way. Can I say how much I hate reading the name Wolverine and in the same book, it could mean three people? And that's not even my issue. The book went from intense and interesting to silly. I hope it's a one off problem, or I'd quit reading.

This X-men series has been wildly inconsistent. Best arc of the year followed by some convoluted plot mixed with silliness.

I didn't expect to like this. I feel like the X-Men books have been dragging, but this was pretty epic. Perfect? No, but overall it was interesting. I get the complaints that, once again, the mutants were all killed, but I still liked it.

The ShadowKat stuff was great, but the part with the Fantastic Four was absolutely terrible. The dialogue was unbelievable. The art was clunky. The way they are pushing Rasputin IV is annoying.

Wow. This is incredibly bad. Weird jokes in the fighting. Plot points that make no sense. While I think Duggan had good issues, this one is not it.

The "humor" just isn't funny...like the recent movies, it is trying too hard. Magik fighting with Juggernaut makes sense. The two of them fighting like 8 year olds doesn't. Scott, who is a master tactician, won't even listen to his dad when his dad is like "wait, this part is important". Not believable. But the bones of the plot itself are good, which keeps me reading.

The dialogue was off. More importantly, these characters, with this much history, wouldn't act that way toward each other. Once I got over that, it was decent.

I was hoping to find interest in the event, but only found storytelling where all action was disjointed and had no depth along with story that didn't interest me. Bishop either has been de-aged and I didn't read it or being drawn 20 years younger.

So many parts didn't make sense, like the uncle followed Peter's career but didn't know Illyana was older. I don't enjoy books that cause you to say "they wouldn't say (or do) that" so often.

It's clear everyone loved this. It's clear it's not for me. I don't know most of the characters and the ones I do, I know very little. It feels like a D&D fantasy book but with one dimensional characters spouting terrible dialogue. Clearly I'm missing what others like.

I was really frustrated that there were brand new ways telepathy works, and they were created just to have this story. Since when can't Jean read a mind because the Id gets in the way? Flimsy way to keep the story going. I don't like it.

This book is very strong. It's take is different because we see a fictionally culture of misplaced people that seems do believable. That was evident in this issue. Aric shows leadership in the way he brings his people home and implores them that it's the right decision. Then he meets up with Gilad, the Eternal Warrior, and there is believable interplay between old friends. The first half of the issue had pretty interesting art, but it seemed to fall off as soon as Gilad showed up.
